New contracts are Champions League dividend

1114

It’s great news that Celtic have secured three first choice players, Charlie Mulgrew, Adam Matthews and James Forrest, on new long term contracts.  It allows the players to forget about long-term career issues and concentrate on team matters and the manager and scouts can worry about squad recruitment efforts in other areas.

This news is a direct consequence of Champions League group stage qualification.  Not only do Celtic have funds to increase wage budget, more importantly, aspirational football players, who want to reach the very top of the game, have a reason to be here.

The same is true of Fraser Forster’s England call up.  Scottish football has long been regarded along the lines of lower division football in England, but with Champions League football, the English national team have endorsed our football.  It will be easier to attract the next wave of recruits as a result.  One day Kris Commons [stand out Player of the Year candidate]can only hope his own national team will regard his productive displays in the same manner.

‘McCoist vows to bounce back’ (Daily Mail)

does he realise they have just lost to the lowest ranked senior team in Scotland???

bounce back to where??? mediocrity :-)

  10. KK – is that the same James who played 7 times for Scotland and scored 6? Must have been plenty better at that time to keep him out of the team! ;-(

  12. There was some discussion late last night regarding our current run of good form in europe which has seen Neil’s team lose just once in the last eleven games. Our victory in Moscow was not only significant for being our first Champions League Group away win it also meant Celtic had recorded three consecutive wins away from home. A feat never achieved by any previous Celtic team.

Neil’s full record (home and away)is played 18, won 8 lost 5 and drawn 5. (Sion results included)

Jock Stein’s first 18 games yielded 13 wins, 3 losses and 2 draws. In Jock’s first 12 games he recored 10 wins, one loss (controversially to Liverpool at Anfield) and one draw.

It is also interesting to look at Jimmy McGrory’s record. In 14 European ties, Celtic had 7 wins 4 losses and 3 draws. However all 4 of those losses were away from home, against Valencia, who were the holders and would go on to win the Fairs Cities Cup that season, Barcelona, Dinamo Zagreb and arguably one of the worst results in the club’s history 0-4 against MTK Budapest in the second leg of the European Cup Winners Cup semi Final. Celtic had won the first leg 3-0 and a final in Brussels (v Sporting Lisbon) beckoned.

Jimmy’s Celtic were undefeated at Celtic Park and his team recorded probably the club’s first great european result when they defeated the highly talented Czechoslovakian side Slovan Bratislava 1-0 home and away.

The away victory was so highly regarded in the football world that on the following Saturday, in the Scottish Cup tie at Ibrox, the tradition of both sides taking to the pitch at the same time was abandoned and Rangers (1873-2012)applauded Celtic on to the field.

The full record of the Celtic managers is :-

    Jimmy McGrory – P 14 W 7 L 4 D 3

    Jock Stein – P 68 W 39 L 15 D 14 (ex 3 World Club cup games)

    Billy McNeill – P 24 W 11 L 10 D 3 (2 managerial spells)

    David Hay – P 17 W 7 L 7 D 3 (includes 3 Rapid games)

    Liam Brady – P 10 W 4 L 4 D 2

    Macari/Connor – P 2 W 1 L 1 D 0

    Tommy Burns – P 8 W 3 L 4 D 1

    Wim Jansen – P 6 W 3 L 1 D 2

    Josef Venglos – P 8 W 4 L 2 D 2

    John Barnes – P 6 W 4 L 2 D 0

    Martin O’Neill – P 52 W 26 L 19 D 7

    Gordon Strachan -P 25 W 8 L 13 D 5

    Tony Mowbray – P 10 W 2 L 5 D 3

    Neil Lennon – P 18 W 8 L 5 D 5

Neil, his coaches, and this young Celtic team have already made history (twice this week).

Next year’s european cup final is in……………..Lisbon.

  13. Will never forget McCoist whispering in our manager’s ear and getting off Scott free while our manager was punished. The low life deserves all he gets. He and thon deid team deserve each other. Long may they languish in the nether regions.

  14. It is special that this generation of celtic supporters has seen the demise

of a sectarian institution under the guise of a football club, although it

is still kicking and screaming as it is lowered into its grave it will soon

be no more and we have the privelige to say we were there.

  16.
