New contracts are Champions League dividend

1114

It’s great news that Celtic have secured three first choice players, Charlie Mulgrew, Adam Matthews and James Forrest, on new long term contracts.  It allows the players to forget about long-term career issues and concentrate on team matters and the manager and scouts can worry about squad recruitment efforts in other areas.

This news is a direct consequence of Champions League group stage qualification.  Not only do Celtic have funds to increase wage budget, more importantly, aspirational football players, who want to reach the very top of the game, have a reason to be here.

The same is true of Fraser Forster’s England call up.  Scottish football has long been regarded along the lines of lower division football in England, but with Champions League football, the English national team have endorsed our football.  It will be easier to attract the next wave of recruits as a result.  One day Kris Commons [stand out Player of the Year candidate]can only hope his own national team will regard his productive displays in the same manner.

  1. re. Tom English on Andy Goram – the thing that sticks out a mile on the article is the date.

    Here’s the XI I’d like to see today:

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Forster ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

    Lustig :::::::::::::::::: Wanyama :::::::::::::::::: Mulgrew ::::::::::::::: Izaguirre

    ::::::::::: Ambrose ::::::::::::::::::::: McCourt :::::::::::::::::: Ledley ::::::::::::::::

    :::::::::: Commons ::::::::::::::::::::: Hooper ::::::::::::::::: Samaras :::::::::::::

    Whatever the XI, surely Neil at some point needs to see Ambrose in midfield again after his assured display v Raith Rovers?

    Tom English won’t be getting a job with the Red Tops anytime soon.

    He’s done some splendid stuff lately, but today’s was actually, and depressingly, quite brave.

    That it needs to be said is one thing. That he’s the one to say it will bring him plenty of grief.

    That’ll be Tom joining the Beanos on the banned llist I suppose

    Rm match report?…LOL

    Shame that space constraints on that report meants.they couldn’t mention lee mcculloch was booked for simulation in the box. Very ‘dignified’. Wonder if soccer AM will pit that in their “tom daley’s dive of the week” slot?

    BTW fill in you own gag about mcculloch simulating a footballer.

    I remember watching that game, must have been 13/14, and being disgusted as the tv pictures clearly showed the pig saying what he said to big Pierre.

    So that night I wrote to the sfa addressed to jim farry, explaining I clearly saw ( as we all did) the pigs racist and sectarian comments.

    Still have the reply.

    Farry wrote back saying there was nothing he nor the sfa would nor could do unless the big Pierre complained.

    Truly pathetic.

  17. Snake Plissken on

    Tom English tells the truth and his compare and contrast with Terry is excellent.

    The excuse of “it was a different era in the 1990s” will soon be getting trotted out BUT Goram revealed his filthy Rant only a few years ago – none of us knew what he said in 1996 but Goram bragged about it which makes it even worse in my view.

    Pierre should have raised this at the time but I wonder if it would have been given credence as that era was the height of the Laptop loyal succulent Lamb thing.

    Credit to Tom English for saying it now but it should have been said when the quotes first appeared. Perhaps Tom English (and every other journalist/columnist in the country) should ask himself why did it take him so long to write this.

  18. Morning,

    A beautiful, clear (but cold) sunny morning in Ruglen. Nice day for a stroll to paradise.

    Should see us going top again today – though it’s certainly refreshing to see other teams taking their chances.

  19. Well said English…at last!

    The sycophantic, knee trembling Scottish media never took him to task for the company he kept in Belfast and Glasgow; the ridiculous armband excuse and his admitted racism and sectarianism.

    And he stills gets air-time and column inches. A despicable individual!

  20. Kayal33

    As I said, it’s the XI I‘d like to see.

    What’s your view on Ambrose? Thought he looked absolute class as a midielder. As a defender… (early days, of course)

    Get the impression he’s happy playing anywhere, while Vic is a bit precious about his place as a CM. Mulgrew’s record as a CB v hearts at home is exemplary. So far, he’s played every position bar striker, though I thought he looked excellent as a CM.

    We agree on one thing – in 4-2-3-1, Commons is the only choice for the no.10 role.

  21. “Credit to Tom English for saying it now but it should have been said when the quotes first appeared. Perhaps Tom English (and every other journalist/columnist in the country) should ask himself why did it take him so long to write this.” – Snake, 9.48

    This.

    Maybe, just maybe, the MSM is unenfeebling itself. Murray’s grip, the huns’ grip on the media is slipping, such as their grip on reality is. As their team of SPL players, internationalists, and teenagers being groomed for future fundraising, fails to string together a pair of wins in the fourth tier of Scottish football, their knuckledragging golem following will stop buying papers, so there is less need to pander to them. So who else can the press pander to?

    Totally blown away by Efe’s start.

    Gotta say, I think we need a competent and settled centre half partnership more than we need another midfielder.

    Whilst some of the defending against Spartak could have been better Efe and Kelvin need more time to develop what is starting to look like a pairing we can settle on…

  23. Silver City 1888 on

    Don’t know the source or even if it’s true but since when did that stop the MSM? If it is true, then so much for Armageddon. Long may it last.

    @celticrumours some interesting stats on Armageddon. Out of the 10 clubs who played in spl last season, and this, 5 have seen an increase in crowds. St Mirren are 200 down on last year but visit of Celtic will soon sort that stat. Motherwell down by only 50 fans.

    Traynor claimed last night that attendences were down and that some clubs were having trouble paying Tax and NI.

    Cosgrove replied that that wasnothing new, obviously referring to Whyte’s fiscal policy.
