New contracts are Champions League dividend

1114

It’s great news that Celtic have secured three first choice players, Charlie Mulgrew, Adam Matthews and James Forrest, on new long term contracts.  It allows the players to forget about long-term career issues and concentrate on team matters and the manager and scouts can worry about squad recruitment efforts in other areas.

This news is a direct consequence of Champions League group stage qualification.  Not only do Celtic have funds to increase wage budget, more importantly, aspirational football players, who want to reach the very top of the game, have a reason to be here.

The same is true of Fraser Forster’s England call up.  Scottish football has long been regarded along the lines of lower division football in England, but with Champions League football, the English national team have endorsed our football.  It will be easier to attract the next wave of recruits as a result.  One day Kris Commons [stand out Player of the Year candidate]can only hope his own national team will regard his productive displays in the same manner.

With just 4 points between 1st and 8th placed Hibs and Inverness is this shaping up to be the best SPL season ever. ?

    Morning folks

I think we will see Joe Ledley get game time today and that we will see some Tony Watt/Miku/Lassad run outs later in the game possibly.

  3. Rumours on News Now (Celtic) – various sources – that Manyoo are lining up a £10,000,000 for Big Vic. Long term contract for the big man methinks. Over to you Mr Lawell. Get it done!!!!!

  4. Ahhh – the sun is shining, the huns are still entertaining us, I got my Glastonbury tickets, Celtic are doing fab and I am off to see them soon and I’ve got an Ultravox gig to go to tonight.

    Happy days…..

After a bit of thought it hit me that both statements are true. We will be one of the teams whose domestic crowd has fallen and by so much that it would wipe out the gains of every other team in the League. So all you part timers out there come to a game. I would hope for a big crowd today but I can’t see it being a sell out.

  6. silver city,

The Sunday fixtures and early kick offs have an effect on our attendances.

A large percentage of our support travel from great distances and it is not always viable ,time and money wise to attend regularly.

Add in the recession and you have your reasons why not as many are going.

I had a look at attendances comparing the first 4 home gates for each of the 10 with last years ( I took out all Celtic, Zombies and derby games, which means some only have 3 games ).

    The following is the outcome:

    2011/12 2012/13

    Aberdeen 33.9K 43.5K

    D/Utd 19.3K 20.7K

    Hibs 35.3K 39.3K

    Hearts 39.6K 36.9K

    ICT 11.0K 10.5K

    M/well 14.2K 13.0K

    St Johnstone 10.8K 13.0K

    St Mirren 13.9K 13.4K

    Kilmarnock 18.4K 20.7K

All figures based on BBC records.

So their you have an overall increase of just under 7% compared to last year.

As the great Jim Royal would say ” Armageddon my Hin-end”

  11. Funniest and most breathtaking comment regarding Sevco yesterday came from Gordon Dalziel.

He was becoming increasingly iritated as the match wore on and it was still 1 nil to Stirlin Albion (as he called them). His imagery of what Ally McCoist should be telling his team wore darker undertones each time he spoke about it.

Then with about 6 mins left he said ‘Ally should take a baseball bat in to that dressing room’… then within the same breath realised this may be a tad forceful and said ‘ or a hairdryer or something’ .

    Please don’t sack Ally MCoist

Cos if you sack Ally McCoist

We’ll have nothing to laugh about.

Then at one point Dalziel was extolling the virtues of the Souness appraoch and how he told his expensively assembled superstars to win the battle then win the game. He recounted Sounesses first match in charge were he told his players they had to put their stamp on the game first then play the football. Delahunt quickly recalled that Souness assaulted George McCluskey leaving him with a gaping wound in his shin. I think Mr Dalziel the Motherwell supporter would advocate such an approach in the 3rd division.

And it was Arsenal that were buying Victor before the last window closed yada yada yada.

We got it with Izzaguirre before he’d kicked a ball for Celtic, and Kayal has been linked eslewhere to suit their agenda.

One more good game and it’ll somebody, anybody, please let it happen “preparing a bid for Efe Ambrose”

The huns keep saying that everybody kicking them when they’re down but from where I’m standing it looks like they’ve already doused themselves in petrol and lit the match.

    These guys are tactical geniuses.

Anyone wonder why Dalziel isn’t a manager any more?

  22. As I mentioned yesterday, had it been us in the 3rd division, yesterday’s result would have been all over the BBC, site probably on the main news page.

If you were an English fan and went on the football page for a 5 minute run thru the news, you wouldn’t notice that the huns lost.

However, the shame of it would force us to redouble our efforts, with them they just go further into denial.

The Sevco result did not affect my mood at all yesterday.

It really is hard to care. I have no interest in Third Division football and never will do.

  26. Morning all. Lovely day for a game, going by North Ayrshire. trouble is I can never manage to Parkhead on a Sunday before about 2.30. So, can’t make it. Won’t say any more as I’ve ranted about this more than once.

Let’s show the SPL what we can really do and score that longed for 5-0 victory.

Enjoyed English’s article but I doubt if anything will change until we are rid of the Ogilvies, who control the game in Scotland. Here’s hoping they end up in the gile for their corruption.
