Newco cannon fodder plans

804

While I was busy telling one of my first bosses how much money we were going to make in a year or two, he made a comment which has remained with me since, “If you don’t make some sales next month, we’ll not be around to find out if you’re right.”

Plans for 2022 don’t mean a fart to a company which is haemorrhaging cash, billionaire funders, nomads and auditors, all the consequence of a two year war of attrition as newco Rangers tried to fight off an insurrection.

There are literally thousands of metrics you can use to compare the prospects of football clubs but let me draw your eye to a couple, which will give you real insight into the future.

Last season Celtic had 475 “full time equivalents” in employment, 318 people in non-football roles and a further 157 in football operations (players, coaches etc.).  If the average pay of those 318 non-football full-time staff was £25k (I doubt it’s this low), their combined wage bill would be just below £8m.  Celtic’s total annual wage bill was £37.766m, total operating expenses were £59.885m.

If you want to win the Scottish Premiership, this is what you’re competing against.

Newco Rangers announced operating expenses (before amortisation) of £15.684m for the six months to 31 December, which included £6.7m wages, covering both football and non-football staff.  If the figures for the second half of the year are consistent with the first that would give them around £31m income and a £13.4m spend wages.  Income is around half Celtic’s expenses and wages a fraction of Celtic’s

What newco need is tens of millions of pounds of investor cash, the £50m Dave King spoke about ‘when in opposition’ is not an overestimate.

Anything they say before “Here is the £50m investment we need” is there to take attention away from the fact that they haven’t said “Here is the £50m investment we need”.  When they say that, they’re in the game, until then, they’re cannon fodder.  When they stop talking about the £50m needed, they know it’s not coming.

I’d go with Broonie, he is the beating heart of our team,

still as mad as a brush though.. o))

    ——-

    Not mutually exclusive!

We miss Broonie so much when he’s not on the pitch.

I fear we’d miss Gordon in much the same way. Off to buy a giant ball of cotton wool for the two of them!

Don’t know if you saw but semi final tickets go on sale this morning.

  3. Like in 67 the bbc had a program called sports personality of the year, and Celtic as a team won it hands down, had never been done before, and I don’t know if it has ever been repeated, but I’m sure someone will know, anyway my point is, I would give the whole team the POTY award as they have all done a great job including the backroom staff, IMO that is.

I find when comparing transfer fees it’s usually a good idea to include the player contract as part of the cost of the deal. Doing so can give a better understanding of relative budgets that transfer fees alone may hide.

Under MON we signed several players from the top flight in England. Not something that happens very often at Celtic.

I noticed tickets behind goals are for under16’s and pensioners whilst the more expensive tickets are for South and North stand…

Surely the purpose of Lennoxtown is not solely the nurturing of young talent. It is also a world class training facility which helps to attract good players to the club. I am amazed that you would even think about closing it down because it isn’t churning out a conveyor belt of young talent through the first team.

I believe Celtic do bring through youngsters regularly, but if there is a problem in that area, then I am sure there are many varied reasons for that other than the existence of Lennoxtown.

  7. KJ you have a cheek mentioning the future, you are firmly stuck in the past!! BT I,m sure some CQNers no more about football than others but divergence and difference of opinion is to be encouraged. Hail Hail hebcelt

I’ve not looked at prices yet. I normally take tickets for North Stand at Hampden because I can’t stand being behind the goals. This season tickets have been the same price with only the South Stand being more expensive.

What a lot of folk fail to recognise is….MO’N was competing v’s….the most expensively assembled huns team in history £100mill?….and, all the mibbery-smsm-spin-local-dark-arts-magic-circle-eastern-star-ebt-systems-and-all-associated-demons that a Celtic manager has to negotiate to be successful.

I’d say…he did not too badly.

Folk will compare WGS with MO’N and tell ye that, WGS achieved more than MO’N on a cheaper budget….but,….what they will ‘conveniently’ fail to mention is that….WGS wasnt taking on the most expensive huns team ‘ever’….no, he was taking on the huns in freefall and, when Walter came back and spent money that wasnt there whilst the Celtic’bored’ looked the other way….WGS…got fun-oot….and the park sterted to empty and….has been emptying ever since….maybe Ronny will change that?

I don’t think we will close down Lennoxtown, we have invested far too much. I don’t think that final step would be desirable and viable alternatives would have to be in place anyway, but we have to investigate all avenues to enhance its purpose and usefulness.
