Nir Biton, preparations for the ArenA

1993

There will have been tired limbs at Lennonxtown when the players resumed full training yesterday after their exertions on Tuesday night but they will still be desperate to take to the field at Firhill on Sunday.  This game is a necessary preparation ahead of the Amsterdam AreanA in 12 days.

We have an advantage for Amsterdam…..

Ajax are nip and tuck with a handful of clubs near the top of the Dutch league.  They have three home games in the league and cup before facing Celtic and the pressure is on to win each of them.  Ajax don’t have the ability to allow players extended recuperation time to ensure they are in pristine condition for Champions League duty, Celtic do.

I would rest everyone we don’t have good cover for.  This is also a game for Nir Biton to start.  The player needs to get back in the saddle as quickly as possible after Tuesday, he is also unlikely to see Champions League group stage action again this season.

After his international and other duties, Charlie Mulgrew would benefit from a rest.  We don’t have sufficient cover for James Forrest and Beram Kayal, so send them away for the weekend.

Use every advantage possible.

    – The TWP must be one of the hardest working bands ever. Always on touring and releasing songs. They are on stage at 8pm at the ABC, Glasgow tonight. You should be able to get tickets there. They are doing a set of songs from ‘Hit Parade’, along with song WP classic and their new single: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Af-KkapRA

Since the subject of rugby has been raised today I’ll offer a wee confession myself. Actually it’s the second time I’ve confessed this on this hallowed board, the first time I was abused on night shift repeatedly by a certain contributor and repeatedly called a “f*****g Farquhar” (whatever that means). I digress, I was going to say that I played rugby at a high level for almost twelve years.

This time I’ll add to my confession, which I should have done the first time, is that I’m 6’3, a ginger and a fair sized lump. Anyone that chooses to cast doubts on my alliegences is welcome to do so on my next visit home to my big perreroni pizza coupon. Thank you and have a nice day.

  9. Pukki with a slightly different is the Gaelic for ghost and perhaps Pukki does alot of unseen work during a game. Seriously though, Stokesy and the Icelander have a thankless task against these big European sides in putting pressure on opposing defenders.

I remember the ROI under Jack Charlton scared the shit out of opposing teams with this pressure game eventually making the quarter finals of the World Cup in Italy.

John Aldridge was an absolute prolific scoring machine with Liverpool but he was so busy closing down opponents with a subsequent drain on his energy levels that it was quite a while before he actually got his first international goal.

This is the way you survive against these highly skillful World class sides. Like a lot of other Celtic players who have had the fans in doubt and eventually come good, Pukki has to be given his chance.

  10. Pat,

Why are you and the majority of celtic affiliated media men afraid to speak about the cover up. Re: deadco… Do you fear for your job.

Or maybe, you condone the corruption within the sfa which allows them to portray themselves as the same club?

  11. Dear Pat

Do you suffer from Existentialism? You know – when listening to fans singing?

Pukki bashers – shame on you. Give the bhoy a chance to shine before you crucify him; and try watching the GAME of football and not just the highlights playing in your narrow minds – he did what his job designation stated on Tuesday: close down, close down, close down, pick up scraps and try and make something of it. No glamorous swashbuckling role.

Or perhaps now that Sammi has shoved the shameful vitriol back in the faces of the Green Huns, frustration, intolerance and ignorance requires a new player in the Hoops to boo?

Thank you for hitting the nail on the head. Anyone who chooses to criticize any Celtic player after an outstanding EUROPEAN victory is beyond my understanding. And don’t give me that: “well, I just want to see us doing better claptrap”.

  21. Do not give Pat Nevin an easy ride. Ask him the pertinent questions like `why does he put the boot in at every available opportunity, and just HOW good is that soup? And what IRA songs were being belted out at Celtic Park that made him stop taking his boy back. Why did he lie on air at the Scottish Cup final about hearing sectarian songs. Or why comment on them at all if he was merely told that it had been reported. Why did he refrain from commenting on the League Cup final, (Kenny MacAskills wonderful occasion.) when it was non stop bile from Scotlands shame.

Why do you think Police arrest daft boys for singing Roll of Honour, and do not arrest Dutch Football Hooligans doing what they do best, including Sectarian singing against the Pope and indiscriminate violence, clearly seen by them.

Should the Police have used the Cameras they used on the Green Brigade on them?
