No one wanted Celtic from Pot 4

1078

Let’s be honest with each other, there’s a bit of a leap between our European performances in recent seasons and the standards of Champions League football. My expectations for this season’s tournament hasn’t seen me check out accommodation options in Cardiff in May.

With that in mind, if we’re going to fall short, let’s do it against genuine quality opposition, some of the best players and tactically organised teams in the business. Barcelona, Manchester City (think Pep, but with more money) and Borussia Monchengladbach will bring this to Glasgow over the next few months.

Over our 15 year Champions League lifespan, Celtic surprise on the upside more often against better teams than against relative minnows. The biggest disappointments came in Scandinavia, not Iberia.

When the group stage finishes in December, we will faced enormous challenges. Players will have stretched themselves to lengths they didn’t know existed. What we know for sure, is that none of the other three teams in our group will have wanted Celtic from Pot 4. This is a hard draw for everyone.

Huge game tomorrow. Anything less than 100% and we’ll drop points. Enjoy it.

  1. STEFAN Johansen has joined English Championship club, Fulham on a three-year deal. The Norwegian internationalist moves to Craven Cottage after two-and-a-half-years with the Hoops.

The 25-year-old midfielder signed for Celtic in January 2014, moving from Norwegian side, Stromsgodset. And since then he has gone on to make 114 appearances, scoring 20 goals for the club.

He has won three Scottish Premiership titles and the League Cup, and he was also named the SPFA Player of the Year for the 2014/15 season after an outstanding campaign. He was also Celtic’s Player of the Year and joint Players’ Player of the Year with Scott Brown in the same season.

Everyone at Celtic would like to thank Stefan for his contribution to the club’s success during his time with the club, and we wish him every success in his future career with Fulham.

Of course there are many big Celtic fans…but can we not also have wee Celtic fans?

  3. All the best to Jo Hansen.

But i can’t say i’m sorry he’s gone. Seemed to have gone into a huff over a year ago and has sulked around Glasgow ever since.

  4. BSR – sent the news about Stefan on to my Bhoy only to get a text back “Aye, and Elvis is deed!”

    in the pub since work.

wife just said “they’ve just scored”

    I said “Kris boyd”

    her reply “typical”

    me “he’s with Killie”

her “oh so he is – they are in blue!”

    followed by a smile.

I must admit my heart sank too when I seen monster munch had scored lol a quick computation and I burst out laughing, mon killie!

  7. Best of luck to Joe Hanson, had one great season but maybe lost his way a bit. Always tried hard & hope he does well for himself.

At times it appears very little is happening on transfer front but if you check closing squad last year to present squad there has been quite a few changes, 5 new faces & Stokes, Cole, Scepovic, Fisher, Charlie, Blackett, Joe Hanson out. Think I am missing out on someone but on CQN, it won’t be long till someone fills in the gaps.

  8. This Sevco don’t look like a Champions League team to me.

Joe Garner escapes a booking for a very late challenge on a Killie defender. He loojs like a thug. Committed more fouls than any other player in the Championship last season. He was born to play for that lot.

  9. From the official Killie Twatter:

Can Boyd score his first goal against Rangers and take his total over the 100 mark tonight?

Killie tweets are good. Last week there was one stating “Boyd shits one over the bar”. Gues they found a use for all them paper roses they keep going on about…

  11. At one stage there i think all 20 outfield players were in the centre circle. Very bizarre.

  12. Now certainly there have been a few stoppages in the first half. But can anyone remember the last time a board was held up at half time with 5 (five) added minutes!

Might come back to bight them…..

    Remember Tiger Tim in Parkhead?

He was a funny bloke on the tannoy. Which was Twitter for the 80’s / 90’s

  14. Seen the past few mins of the hun game, they are shockingly bad, as are Killie.

Goal kick there and you could throw a hankie over all the players in the center circle waiting for the ball, the sort of stuff you would see at a primary schoolkids game, kids that haven’t been coached.

  15. Good luck to Stefan, who engineered his move to Londhan, the thruppeny bit.

Sure he will be watching the champions league on his kangaroo pouch and his trouble and strife will remind him

That could have been you at that todd carty you cupid stunt.

Yeah what a tom tit I am!!

TT was the best thing about Celtic in the early 90s! Sacked for what was a pretty inoffensive joke…

  18. THE EXILED TIM on 26th August 2016 8:37 pm

I did, thought they were all walking off for half time, looked at the clock and just shook my head wondering what was going on. It was very bizarre, but funny!!

So Fulham get Stefan Johansen and we get 20 year old Moussa Dembele plus £1.5m. Sounds like a good deal to me !

Thanks to Stefan for the magic season he gave us.

Wasn’t it something about Rangers FC 1872 being humped out of Europe?

Was disappointed when he was sacked, funny bloke.

  21. onenightinlisbon on

In hiding here in Killie avoiding the newco hordes. However watched their first half “performance’ and was struck by poor they are in all departments. Teams like Hamilton and Dundee should have taken points off of them and Killie should tonight. However as I’m sure we all are I’m awaiting the honest mistakes to appear in the second half. Ref has been average but missed two big ones. Killie should have had a penalty and the Preston reject should have been at the very least, yellow carded for his attack on the young Killie defender. He will suit their style well. Here’s hoping for the three points staying local to me tonight!

  22. Bayern go 3 up in 46th minute.

They look more direct than Guardiola’s team last season.

    Vidal joining in attack frequently.

They play last of triangles but are willing to play diagonals behind defenders early.

Ancelotti is a good coach and will address some of their defensive frailty.

A good bet for Champions league.
