Normalising violence

264

When you normalise violence, for example, by telling a broadcaster you cannot guarantee the safety of one of their commentators, or when you refuse to act swiftly when a coach headbutts an opponent on live TV after a game, you invite society’s worst demons into your domain.

Like most of the world, the majority of football clubs do their best to rid themselves of the casually violent.  The game’s reputation was taken into the sewer 50 years ago, before slowly and expensively brought back into the mainstream.

Flirting with violence only encourages the mindless to take it one step further.  The cost takes time to manifest, but decent fans want no part of it, their attachments weaken, leaving the tub thumpers ownership of the narrative.  It is also a glaring sign of decline and weakness.

Well done to Steve Clarke, Callum McGregor and the rest of the Scotland team on collecting six points from their opening two European Championship games.  A win in Norway in June would set the national team up for a classic Scotland capitulation against Georgia and Cyprus.

AN TEARMANN on 29TH MARCH 2023 4:59 AM,

That inane drivel perfectly demonstrates an inability to understand plain English “why don’t you go home’ was a problem for me”, makes me an apologist for the famine song?

The failure to reconcile the concept “that a united Ireland and united Scotland, England and Wales are not mutually exclusive” does not require people to conform with your tunnel vision of what “united” or “union” must be interpreted as, or who owns the word “unionist”. We can say Irish unity, United Ireland but not Irish unionist and in every diatribe to date you failed to provide a reasonable argument on why not?

When I first posed the question on here a few years ago, of why we do not take ownership of the phrase Irish unionist? I fully understood the historical implications of mentioning unionism in relation to Ireland, when Ireland became a dominion state in 1922 then a sovereign nation in 1937 “Irish Unionist” organisations faded then died becoming extinct and transformed into Ulster unionism.

As yet, beyond the historical entrenchment and pedantic intransigence I have still not seen a reasonable argument as to why it is not more widely adopted, on the contrary it appears to stir up only bigotry from the likes of you in the face of its literal meaning. In my opinion, it will mock and confuse the Ulster Unionists no end. And on that basis alone I’ve chosen to use it, with or without your consent.

I expect you demand it be enshrined because you are too lazy to think of another way to keep divisions simple and hatred easily directed.

I have already told you I reject your attempts at controlling the literal meaning and narrative on the discussion and dismiss any critique from you based on your straw man arguments, its your failure not mine. You have only confirmed your bigotry and failure to grasp that a single literal concept (union, unity) can applied across to both sides of the divide.

On the article, P67, what are the PLC doing about it, they are responsible for the health and well being of their employee’s, its all well and good babbling about the incident being under investigation by the police but there are sporting rules on conduct that can be applied without police involvement that the PLC should be insisting are implemented immediately. To that end we’ve seen nothing.

  3. Still no comment from Snake Mountain, and it’s waaayyyy past Statement o’Clock. Dearie me. You’d almost think they’re hoping that if they stay quiet it’ll all go away…

  4. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Copulate snake mountain, the PLC are within their rights to treat the assailant as a dangerous risk to their staff and ban him from entering the stadium. They have banned supporters for less.

  5. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Bada..,

And the PLC could keep it centre stage by banning the thug from the stadium.

  7. Paul 67,

Violence should never be normalised. What happened in the 1970’s etc have indeed been expensively largely removed from our grounds.

Many of us can vividly remember these times from a Celtic perspective. Literally hundreds of arrests at a Celtic v Rangers game was the norm, gangfights in the grounds , huge uncontrolled cargos going into games, peeing in cans ( or on other people ) and glamourisation of organised football firms.

Footballers being idolised nomatter their behaviour.

After all it was a ” Man’s Game”

What changed.? I can only speak for Parkhead, but it’s generally a pleasure to attend games now.

More women and families attending games.

    Seating stadia

    Controlled alcohol at games.

A change in culture and society.

Enhanced match day experience and facilities.

Put simply; what was acceptable years ago is no longer acceptable.

Females and families must be ensured of their safety and a family friendly atmosphere.

There is no going back. Racism, misogyny, sectarianism and homophobia have no place in football. Eradication of the said scourges makes football grounds less violent.

That is why behaviour such as headbutting opposition managers at a ladies game must be dealt with in the strongest possible manner.

However it is a constant challenge to ensue we don’t go back to the dark old day’s. We must ensure fences are never a fixture to prevent missiles etc.

Complacency must never creep into our thought process.

Well done Scotland. A brilliant start.

A special word for Callum McGregor who played every minute in both games. I believe the only midfielder to do so. A testament to his attitude and fitness.

  8. “A win in Norway in June would set the national team up for a classic Scotland capitulation against Georgia and Cyprus.”

It was interesting the last time we went to Georgia needing to get points, the then manager of Scotland – one Gordon Strachan – blamed Scottish genetics for the defeat.

I saw an interesting pre-kick-off photo of the Scotland team from last night, the front row had all been in and around either the Celtic youth set-up or development squad before progressing with Celtic or elsewhere.

The backrow did not look like a bunch of wee geezers that you’d be pushing around, far from it

Scotland have come along way from the defeatest attitude of Gordon’s time and I see no capitulation on the horizon

Celtic were inflicted with this to, for too long, it’s taken a no nonsense Aussie to implement a true warrior, never say die attitude to the Celtic squad, long may it continue

I haven’t seen that, the last I heard was that the Sheriff ordered background reports.

However missile throwing is a very serious matter. It was sad to see some on here trivialising it at a charity game.

We cannot condone it on one hand and call for draconian punishment on the other.

The consequences of condoning such behaviour are illustrated above.

  13. Chairbhoy

Scotland have come along way from the defeatest attitude of Gordon’s time and I see no capitulation on the horizon

Gordon Strachan’s defeatism produced a 47.5% win rate for Scotland. Stevie Clarke’s win rate is now 48.84%, only thanks to the recent two victories. Those 40%+ win rates are fairly typical for Scotland. Ormond, Macleod, Stein, Brown, Smith, Levin and Alex McLeish (2018/19) all had similar rates.

Only Tommy Docherty (58%), McLeish 2007 ( 70% over 10 games) and Billy Stark- (100%, 1 win in 1 game) have really bucked that level. Andy Roxburgh fell below that 40% barrier, and Alex Ferguson, Berti Vogts and George Burley fell way below it.

Maybe not fascism as been claimed but certainly the attempted regimentation of CQN is worrisome

Do you have a reading difficulty? Has someone claimed that my post was “fascism” and you are grudgingly excusing me of this fault? Regimentation and clique speaks to both a lack of understanding and to a lack of confidence in your ability to make your views and back them up with evidence of my own words. I don’t want regimentation anywhere but I’ll plead guilty to wanting to proscribe things.

Comparing libertarianism to pedophilia and ordering that it is not discussed is way beyond the thinking of reasonable folk.

And way beyond mine too. A comparison is not an equation. A common desire to censor Paedophilia propaganda was used as an example of why no-one has “free speech”. The reference to Libertarianism was in saying I see it as a form of Toryism that is ashamed of the old labels. I never sought to state that anyone should stop discussing it or self identifying as such; I just find it a bit of a hypocritical label. But you feel free to go on using it.

I know you have found a safer space on Sentinel Celts, Bobby And Mahe’s wonderful site, to enjoy your own “echo chamber”. But even there horrible posts from the likes of the Lion’s Roar (not the good guy that used to post on CQN but soon using a similar moniker) had to be taken out and censored. I know it upset a few of the Sentinel Celts contributors that Bobby and Mate took this action (I don’t know what your views were on their censorship/proscription/fascism) but I assume you still fell comfortable contributing there, despite this “low for me” feeling. Bobby and Mate are potentially legally responsible for what is said by others on their site as is Paul67 on here.

My attempt to control this site was to take myself away from it if it ever descended into the kind of pro-EDL outlook that was starting to be expressed. Some attempt to control or dictate, that is. Sure, did you not do the same thing yourself when Sentinel Celts started, identifying that as your “clique and echo chamber” site of preference and only commenting here on rare occasions.

Allow me the right to dissociate myself from racist and fascist scum and I’ll allow you similar rights. Go on identifying as Libertarian, if you so wish. Have no power or right to stop you.

I only have my own poor words and my own sense of right and wrong and I intend to preserve the freedom to express them because genuine Totalitarians of right, left and even those mistakenly identifying as centrist or apolitical, can limit those precious rights.

But don’t mistake freedom of speech for the right to shout “Fire!” in crowded enclosed spaces.

We don’t always see eye to eye on here but, for what it’s worth, that was an excellent post from the last blog and I agree with every word.

  16. I would position that the hun who is jailed for throwing a glass bottle that injured severely a Celtic coach, would not have even been lifted had he only thrown a plastic bottle that caused no injury whatsoever.

As proof of this, the courts are not filled with cases of “the accused did wilfully hit my client with a paper cup filled with a dangerously cold dark liquid causing personal indignation and wet clothes”

I know what you mean on Scotland and foot shooting but can we not celebrate for a few days at least?😎

Couple of insights from the Emerald Isle

    1. Richard Dunne on Virgin Media said ‘McTominay and McGinn will get all plaudits, and rightly so, but McGregor is the player that makes the platform to make it all happen’ . Brian Kerr agreed and they pointed out McGregor position as McTominay went from deep to score

    2. Guys in the Dublin office were very complimentary, one lassie said ‘we celebrated a loss on Monday, you guys did the business’

The only concern I had last night was the amount of ‘Haaland friendly’ crosses we let happen. Clarke will be on this.

Mon Scotland and the fantastic support

  18. I am reminded of the time I got run over.

I got into an argument with a guy at the local park, I dint like that he wouldnt pick up the dog shit.

I made my way out, but he followed me, got in his cark, put the window down and gave me incoherent babbling abuse, then mounted the pavement and knocked me down. Grinning and sneering he took off as fast as he could.

The incident was captured on camera, and witness statements were made. I called the police, gave them the description , a short blonde haired tight t-shirted fat fingered youth, driving a souped up decal added car with the special sports tyres added.

The police caught up with him, but I felt they trivialised the incident and they let him off with a warning.

Since 2019, a Rangers coach (Beale) had to restrained at Celtic Park from attacking a Celtic coach (Kennedy), a Celtic coach has been scarred for life by a missile thrown by a Rangers supporter at Ibrox and most recently the Celtic Women’s team manager has been physically assaulted by the Rangers Women’s coach shown live on television on Monday night. When are the SFA going to summon someone in a position of authority at Ibrox to Hampden to call them to account for these attacks on Celtic staff and warn them of the direst consequences for Rangers IFC if there is a repetition.

Soft money and the real neds in the blue room, get angrier the further away from the Petrofac Cup and “ “Same old Alloa always cheatin” they think they’ve gotten.

The Scottish conspiracy is so Rainjurz like you’d be forgiven for thinking they were the same club, Some Celtic supporters reckon we missed a boat when Neil Doncaster giddy upped with the spare licence, snatched by Green and McCoist.

Every day of their existence Celtic pay a ‘penalty ‘ in the phoney war that should have been declared officially over ten years ago in a country that runs amok trying to make up for Rainjurz downfall and inescapable liquidation.

To get to the fiscal you need PC plod first and foremost, but he like staunch Scotland has so far, been dragging feet. All the while Rainjurz or Sevco clamped by Celtic their never ending nemesis, eleven leagues from twelve and the record highest turnover of any Scottish club is the reality for the contented jungle.
