Normalising violence

264

When you normalise violence, for example, by telling a broadcaster you cannot guarantee the safety of one of their commentators, or when you refuse to act swiftly when a coach headbutts an opponent on live TV after a game, you invite society’s worst demons into your domain.

Like most of the world, the majority of football clubs do their best to rid themselves of the casually violent.  The game’s reputation was taken into the sewer 50 years ago, before slowly and expensively brought back into the mainstream.

Flirting with violence only encourages the mindless to take it one step further.  The cost takes time to manifest, but decent fans want no part of it, their attachments weaken, leaving the tub thumpers ownership of the narrative.  It is also a glaring sign of decline and weakness.

Well done to Steve Clarke, Callum McGregor and the rest of the Scotland team on collecting six points from their opening two European Championship games.  A win in Norway in June would set the national team up for a classic Scotland capitulation against Georgia and Cyprus.

  1. Mate has messaged me to say Joe Hart was in the Aspire Lounge (Departures) at Edinburgh Airport.

Strange time to be travelling when we have a game this weekend.

…did you ever meet a heidy there called Murray?

    ………………….

Miles Murray was tye heidie at St Thomas Aquinas (aka St Tam’s) in the early 80s. He came from somewhere in Lanarkshire and was there when the school celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1983. It was common gossip that he wore a wig, which was possibly confirmed at the feeshul do for the 25th, where Archbishop Winning, making the official speech, mentioned that when he and Miles were at school together, he seemed to have less hair than did now…

  3. WEEBOBBY, re. the Murdochs.

You are right that Jimmy was at Holy Cross as a pupil – the lucky bhoy was even in my year and some classes so that would be about ’62/63?

Shortly after leaving for Uni I was playing for Hamilton Avondale (whose most famous ex-player wisnae me, but one ,very young, Davy Cooper) and who turned up against us one Saturday but Jimmy, playing for Glasgow Amateurs I think. You are right about his similarity to Bobby, a dead ringer in fact at that time, and he could also play a bit like him. Nice guy.

  4. So 3 Celtic employees have been attacked while going about their business.

Neil Lennon: Manager of Celtic attacked at Tynecastle

Fran Alonso: Manager of Celtic Ladies attacked by oppositon

    (Rangers) assistant coach.

Daniel Friel: Celtic Physio injured by bottle thrown by rangers fan.

2 ex Celtic employees ( Neil Lennon, Chris Sutton) unable to do their job as Sky Sports pundits because “Rangers’ could not gaurantee their safety while working at their stadium.

720 Celtic fans inable to attend game at ibrox stadium because Celtic are worried about their safety.

Celtic, SPFL and Police Scotland have to get together before someone is killed by the hoards from Ibrox. They (rangers) cannot control their employees so not much chance with drunken followers

Haven’t even mentioned poor wee Geoge Square

“Close the ground for 2 matches”

    or forever

Reckless abandon at or around football matches is very much on the increase across Europe

I don’t believe that is down to the bevvy; recreational drugs are the culprit IMO

Antwerp port is letting massive amounts through, despite huge seizures

There are certain Celtic pubs I don’t like to go into due to the wired to the moon lads. They are constantly on edge even when talking Celtic, a common cause

The smell of hash on the way to games at least makes me feel they are trying to mellow out!

    Cheap charlie is a curse

100% convinced that Corporate Seat/Good Job bottle hurler had done a few lines

  8. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

I think we’re nearing the end of a realistic window for Sevco to publicly say anything about the assault of a Celtic coach by one of their employees (?).

(The above assumes of course the women operate under the same legal structure as the rest of Sevco. You never can tell with them).

Strangely, Women’s Football stories have appeared aplenty today on BBC Football website.

For those unaware, unless specifically promoted and held as prominent headline pieces by editors, the articles are presented in date order.

So, if you want something from two days ago OFF the front page?

Simple – find six new stories from anywhere and report them today.

    Ta da !

Second tactic, promotion of story from Women’s Football Home page to Main Football Home page.

    The assault was not promoted.

Strangely, the prospect of a 17-year old Sevco women playing for Scotland has been. 🤔

    My conclusion from the above?

(in absence of many facts admittedly).

Sevco HAVE responded to the assault.

Their response has been to get their toadies at Pacific Quay to bury the story.

  9. B2B

The story was on BBC News front page originally and on Sport and trickle down to Scot Foot obviously

I was pleasantly surprised at that so can’t see conspiracy here……this time 😎

Doesn’t matter if it’s drugs or drink you need to control your fans/workforce. Mr Bealer was “assistant” at Ibrox when he went for John Kennedy maybe it goes with job descriptiom.

We cannot legislate for Europe but surely we can try for Scotland.

I don’t go to football here in Indonesia as a lot is town against town and lots of trouble. Over one hundred killed last year when police fired teargas into crowd after invasion onto park.

Under 20 world cup here in June and maybe try a game (not Indonesia)

Just ban the currants after we beat them in the cup

  14. I also met two skiers arguing about whether you ‘zig, zag’ or ‘zag zig’ on a slalom

They agreed to ask the first person they met at the bottom to settle it

One skier asked the first guy they met ‘ is it zig/zag or zag/zig?’

    He says ‘ I don’t know, I’m a tobogganist’

‘Fair enough, I’ll have 20 Benson & Hedges’

  15. Bottle thrower should get a lifetime ban from the Bigotdome – no holding your breath at the back.

“We hope you are looking forward to your next visit to Celtic Park for our match against Rangers on Saturday, April 8.

For this game, as we have done previously, we will be providing all Season Ticket holders in the Rail Seating area with a specific match ticket.”
