Normalising violence

264

When you normalise violence, for example, by telling a broadcaster you cannot guarantee the safety of one of their commentators, or when you refuse to act swiftly when a coach headbutts an opponent on live TV after a game, you invite society’s worst demons into your domain.

Like most of the world, the majority of football clubs do their best to rid themselves of the casually violent.  The game’s reputation was taken into the sewer 50 years ago, before slowly and expensively brought back into the mainstream.

Flirting with violence only encourages the mindless to take it one step further.  The cost takes time to manifest, but decent fans want no part of it, their attachments weaken, leaving the tub thumpers ownership of the narrative.  It is also a glaring sign of decline and weakness.

Well done to Steve Clarke, Callum McGregor and the rest of the Scotland team on collecting six points from their opening two European Championship games.  A win in Norway in June would set the national team up for a classic Scotland capitulation against Georgia and Cyprus.

  2. Good article.

Few can fail to spot the correlation between fan being jailed for a bottle attack and now an alleged attack by a member of sevco staff.

    The silence speaks volumes.

Would respectfully disagree with final sentence of article. Not needed today

Re Holy Cross sec, did you ever meet a heidy there called Murray?

I think he was also at St Thomas at knightswood

Only asking as in recent years i befriended him,an attendee at Celtic Park since the 1950s.He stopped going last year and i still see him,a talking history in his company

Peter Rice! Yes, that’s the man. Thanks for that. I knew he was involved with The Scottish Youths, under 17s or the like. It was circa 1964 so memory not too bad. When we beat HC he told us that was their only defeat that year.

Also…. At 1:55 – Not being able to guarantee Chris Sutton’s safety was damnright disgraceful.

  5. That HunThug still in situ?

Sky, I Know I Know, they, you would think as they try to promote Ladies fitba, let’s be honest they have No interest in Scottish fitba………….. it truly baffles me how this mindless thug is not sacked by newco (never mind been charged by the polis) but as they know they are 2nd best they resort to this and it is indeed a precursor of whats to come.

They are a Cowardly Club and that will become evident in their newco team.

    Anyway happiness.

We are so Blessed to huv Callum – he really is the Main Man.

As I said a long time ago noo, the Scottish Xavi!!!

You obviously need tremendous players all over the park.

His consistency in Everything he does is WOW.

He is unlikely to be my POTY this year. He has been for years. Let someone else win it Cal. :)

  6. AN TEARMAN, yer man Murray was Depute Heidi in the late 70s/early 80s at Holy Cross. As a youngish teacher there at the time I crossed swords with him a few times, but he always kept it professional, never personal. (And he was usually in the right, but don’t tell him that).

Helped me out bigtime one night when I got TWO feckin punctures in my car just entering Aitkenhead Road. Knowing that he had a distinctive (non-metric!) Christian name, I called in to my in-laws flat, perused their ‘phone book and found the particular name. I was driving a Renault 16 at the time, as was yer man Murray. Himself answered the ‘phone, listened to my tale of woe and was with me in Aitkenhead Road in minutes to pass over his spare tyre for my use. Good guy! Pass on my best wishes.

  7. The Brass Neck and bombastic arrogance of some of the “in and out ” drfters thru these green gates is jaw-dropping.

“ Decline and weakness “ – Certainly since 2012 bolstered by staunch Scotland, and every facet of ‘the establishment’ , they can’t let them die like the Rainjurz did.

BOURNE, they certainly are a lamentable crowd! Here’s the Fat Gardener telling it as he sees it, ie. it was all White’s fault, the only problem was a bit of financial mismanagement in the previous 10 months, and the rest of football in Scotland thought Ranjurs had been punished enough. Oh, and all the cups and titles were won fair and square on the park!

  9. POSSIBLE SCAM ?

Today I received an Email SUPPOSEDLY from ” GOV.UK” ?

It advised that I should claim £400 for an ENERGY BILL SUPPORT SCHEME Online by providing my Full Name, Age, Address and BAN CARD/CREDIT CARD Details ?

I have REFRAINED from claiming and/or providing ANY Personal details, as I believe this to be yet another SCAM ?

A few Days ago, I was given £50 foor a WINTER HEATING PAYMENT, which went straight into my Bank Account……I wasnt asked for any personal details beforehand etc.

Has anyone else received this SCAM Email ?

    Be on your Guard.

Sounds dodgy as hell. Best to go directly onto the Gov site to see if there is such a thing and if there is, follow the website instructions. Gov UK site is pretty good so they should, as you say, already know how to pay you. My mother got fuel payment direct to her account same as you.

Rebates on elec/gas are usually done direct with the supplier, so no details needed from you

Well spotted, these are getting smarter and more prolific

  11. I’m Hoping Mikey’s spell @ Guimares proves to be as fruitful as el Capitanos at Notts County.

He is an Ange type of player. nae luck wae injuries but Thankfully, not for just for Celtic but himself, more importantly he is doing really well. It takes balls to make the move he did.

If he is at Ange levels of fitness – Wow.

We really have another Home grown Belter of a Leo Sayer.

Speaking of violence. I see the hun that threw the bottle at our physio got a year in jail..

    ………………..

Sadly, I expect this Hun Thug to released after 3 or 4 Months in Jail ? I hope that i am wrong and that he serves the FULL Term ?

His defence Lawyer claimed in Court that he had a good Job, and that he loves his wife and family…BLAH BLAH BLAH.

This Hun CHUMP did NOT give ANY thought to the Celtic employees health, or whether HE also loved his family etc. I lost a friend and Football Team Mate many years ago, after several years of being an invalid and then DYING…..All because he had been hit on the Head with a Bottle in a Disco.

its that EASY to do serious damage to someone with a Bottle.

I hope that this HUN THUG LOSES his ” Good Job”, and maybe the love and respect of some of his family and friends, work colleagues etc……….HE Deserves NO LESS !

  16. Alan Crawford, 33, was also handed a five-year football banning order for the act of “mindless violence”, when he was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday. Celtic physio Daniel Friel needed four stitches and was left with a scar after he was hit on the head by a bottle in the incident at Ibrox on April 3 last year.

When he appeared at the court earlier this month, Crawford, from Grangemouth, admitted throwing a bottle towards Mr Friel, which struck his head “to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement”.

    …………..

Apart from his sentence of 12 Months in Jail ( Probably means 3 or 4 Months at most ? ) I also hope that this Hun Scumbag and his family are forced to move House away from Grangemouth.

I hope that he loses everything he values.

  17. Weebobbycollins on

Scaniel @ 12.56…I think you may have played against James rather than Billy. I say this because you mentioned Brian Rice was his coach. James arrived at Holy Cross a few months before I left where Brian Rice had been my coach and I presume he went on to be James’ coach as well. Billy wasn’t a Holy Cross pupil. There were four Murdoch brothers : Matt, Bobby, Billy and James. I always thought James looked like Bobby, certainly more so than Billy. The last time I saw Matt was coming out of the stadium in Lisbon after the game. Billy, I had a couple of pints with about 30 years ago. That was the last time I saw him. I saw James at Bobby’s funeral but didn’t speak to him as I had to leave early…

Hope you and the animals are well.

Btw…did your daughter work on Tetris?

  18. Weebobbycollins on

Sorry, Brian Rice no…Peter Rice yes.

Memory box doesn’t always start first time. :-)

  19. On the bottle incident; I don’t know much about the set up at Ibrox but the offender was sitting in an area described as ‘corporate season ticket area’ (sic)

Are beer bottles served in that area? Most pitch facing seats I have been in have plastic tumblers . Bottles would be restricted to internal areas.

I wonder if his ticket allows him to drink inside and he brought the bottle out with him to his seat.

I know I am stretching a lot of assumptions here but there might need to be some tightening of security over there.

PS never caught the lads who threw bottles into our six yard box
