Oft-triangulated Georgios

763

It’s good to be back.  A power outage at our datacentre on Saturday caused servers to crash and subsequent database problems.  Our thanks to Andrew in Belfast for his invaluable help, again…

Trying hard to ignore speculation of various players coming our way, plenty of time for that later in the month, although I will add a note of caution.  The fact that a journalist gets confirmation from Neil Lennon that he is able to sign a £6m player does not constitute a promise to do so.  It’s little more than bait, for those who still read such sources.

I’ve heard nothing but good things over the years about Georgios Samaras.  He is a player who flourishes on confidence, and support, and does so most often at the highest level.  In Europe he is Celtic’s out-ball, a player capable of bringing others into the game, turning defence into attack.  It is at this rarefied atmosphere that his goal-scoring has also been most effective.  Ironically his style is less effective in the SPFL, where Celtic spend far less time 80 yards from goal.

A considerable reason for the low return in the Champions League this season was that everyone knew how reliant we’d become on Georgios.  He was heavily marked; by the time the ball got to his feet, three opponents triangulated around him.

It’s no surprise he has offers from Spain, and no doubt elsewhere, to consider. If he leaves I hope his lasting memories will be cheers of support, not his harsher experiences.

Definition of poor IT planning: datacentres who host their Status page at their own datacentre. “We’re down, but you can’t read this, because we’re down.”

  1. Anyway VVD is one of many who come to us, sometimes at the beginning or towards the end of their careers having won nothing.

Its still important to most professional sportsmen to WIN SOMETHING. Getting something tangible, a medal, a cup, a championship…something to put in the display cabinet.

I remember Lubo being thrilled at his successes with us. He was always a great player but with us he was a winner too!

Remember when they nearly signed messi on loan?

No neither can I but some zombies can hahaha HH

  3. After tonight I could see Man Utd chasing big Virgil.

Hope he stays with us for at least another season.

An outstanding talent that will only get better and be worth more than the £10m mentioned.

  4. Praecepta….

I think Man City have an outstanding chance of winning CL, going by their performance in Munich.

Virgil is not ready to play in that company yet…..but he will be soon.

Bsong was rubbish in the SPL too!

The fanfare from the smsm was unbelievable.

Still think the whole thing was a scam

Only reason I know is he went to school with my son (16 year old) before Celtic Youths moved him to st ninians

Boumsong was pish, always was and always will be, as justafan said, he was hyped up just like all the hun prospects that have never been heard of again.

And I reckon City will win the CL, have them on a few pre season bets that are all up, or will be up, apart form the CL, if they don’t, not a bother, easy come, easier gone.

VVD needs to avoid an EPL sell similar to; Norwich, Swansea, Southampton – short term recognition.

18 months time and he will attract an offer from a pot 1 or 2 CL side.

  9. Justafan….

Boumsong WAS a scam…..that is proven.

Just thought he played well in SPL from what I heard…..Can’t remember seeing him.

Tell you what though….everybody remembers seeing him play for Newcastle…..truly shocking player.

Tasting the Black Grouse for the first time just now. Nice, a bit smokier than I like but ill suffer in silence. Dont want to offend Santa Claus.

He could be a ‘project’ for a pot 1 or 2 CL side if he went now!!

    Hopefully another season with us.

  12. If we can hold on to VVD for another season, and he progresses at the rate he is, he will be worth 20 mill minimum, and Barca would do well to buy him and big Fraser for the same, jeezo, just imagine pedro creamin at that >}

If Barca had a defence !!!

  14. Tet….

    You’re right mate…If Barca had a defence!!

That’s why Munich scored 7 in 2 legs last season, and why Man City will do the same.

  15. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

Virgil needs Sevco in the SPL to test him fully and allow Celtic to realise his full value…… I can just hear that on SSB tomorrow.

  16. Boumsong was a Souness scam. No doubt.

  17. VVD essentially has 3 1/2 years left on his contract before a one year option i.e. he’s tied to us for 4 1/2 years. we can easily afford to keep him for another 2 1/2 years before we need to sell. think we will have him for at least 18 months before he’s sold hopefully by which time he will have helped us secure another 2 c/l group stage places

How many admins are you allowed b4 piff paff poof kicks in and you disappear? Serious Q btw!!

  19. So frustrating every time a Celtic find a gem we start imagining his transfer value…..but hey that’s just the way it is!!

Celtic need out of the SPFL backwater now.

Big Virgil would be a regular very quickly in a top team. Look at Man Utd tonight!

As I mentioned he is a fantastic talent and one I would love us to keep as long as possible.

My ‘project’ comment was an attempt at sarcasm!!

  21. Margaret McGill on

Aye Samaras has been oot triangulated and the spaniards want him and he wants a pay raise

Time the upstart was gone and good riddance!

  22. Nakasammi,

Unfortunately the ManUre fans would not accept a signing from the SPFL, and Moyes knows this.

He would need to be 10/10 every week to win their approval, such is the misguided arrogance at OT.

They would rather pay 20 million for a cart horse like Phil Jones or 15 million for a diddy like Chris Smalling…..sad but true.

    Understood your ‘project’ comment. :-)

The likes of; Man City, Real, Chelsea, Bayern, PSG – high profile spenders (and probably the Italians) won’t touch him – currently VVD lacks profile + they are not renowned for projects.

However – a pot 1 or 2 team (with an aging CB) in today’s ‘spendthrift’ market might consider £10M+ a reasonable punt……………….

but probably based on how VVD performs in Europe pre-Xmas 2014.

Hopefully Virgil is here for 18 months minimum!
