Operation relieve the gullible of £411 each underway

“My father wasn’t at all keen on me becoming a Rangers supporter.  He was a Glasgow policeman and because of that he resented the whole football scene in Glasgow.  ‘He was actually very anti-football.  When we were kids growing up he was very vocal on his dislike of the bigotry in football.  The police in Glasgow at that time saw it as a basis for thuggery.

“My father took me to that first game reluctantly…”

Dave King, shooting the breeze with the Daily Mail in March last year.

“Like all of you who read this letter, I have always taken pride in being a Rangers supporter. It is something I inherited from my father who, in turn, inherited the legacy from my grandfather. This is what Rangers fans do. We pass on our pride and belief in Rangers to our children.”

Dave King’s letter to the season ticket marketing database last week.

One of the two statements is probably true, although with Dave, who knows?  South African judge, Brian Southwood, referred to King as a “glib and shameless liar”.  Despite this, the SFA decided he was an appropriate person to run a football club, free to send out messages like this, with the objective of relieving fans of an average of £411 per person.  This is what happens when you enable people already branded a shameless liar, what do you expect?

I hope the SFA and Trading Standards are alerted to what’s going on, don’t leave it until it’s too late.

I’m waiting for new of the Ben Nevis Huddle, which should have taken place at the peak of the mountain in the last hour.  Over 80 people set out on the climb this morning to raise funds for the Celtic Foundation – to feed the hungry, provide shelter for the homeless and help others in need.

It’s a magnificent Celtic effort.  My wee brother’s up there, you can give his fundraising a pound or two here.  Thank you.

On ken loach. ..i have enjoyed many of his movies.Kes, hidden agenda, Carla song, my name is joe, and many more. Days of hope a TV series from the 70s was very good. However I was disappointed with The Wind that shakes the Barley, I think his analysis that the irish civil war was the result of a left/ right split was incorrect and simplistic

Don’t get me wrong I met a lot of good blokes in there but there was always the…he’s a mick attitude.

Dallas, I never knew about deep rooted bigotry until I started my apprenticeship in there, myself and boothy from knightswood were the token tims the year I started….my feck, I soon learned the hard way.

Still, plenty of nice young woman worked there as well;))

Maybe ‘worry’ is the wrong word. Everything they do is questionable!

I trust Ronny is doing everything within his means to get us in the groups, hope he’s being supported in his endeavours though.

    Almore, Dallasx2,

The Scottish fans were a credit to their team and showed respect for where they were.

Dublin is used to welcoming large groups of sports fans and goes out of it’s way to be hospitable.

I still can’t get over how warm, friendly and humble Paul Mc.Grath is and no request for a selfie was refused.

It was quite funny after Charlie blazed the free kick over the bar and some of the Irish supporters around Rod were doing a bit of ribbing.

Rod replied with an excuse for CM, saying, ” Well, he’s been out injured for half the season and has just come back”.

Spoken like a true Celtic supporter.

    Almore,

Most of my favourite artists have loony leftie beliefs. It doesn’t tend to put me of them.

Loach is a very conservative director: his subjects are very safe and not radical at all. Let’s see him make a movie about radical Islam or the Cuban huns. How about a documentary which investigates gorgeous George? No chance. He isn’t maverick enough. Reactionary Catholic priests are a safer target.

Typical wealthy socialist who doesn’t understand ordinary working class men. As I said, a bore. Well past his sell by date.

Sipsini, a nice ending to your last post.

A school friend of mine applied for a job with the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1980. He had all the necessary qualifications but got the thanks but no thanks reply. Some people who he went to college with , whose qualifications weren’t as good, applied to the same bank and all got jobs. Possible coincidence that he was the only one who went to a school with a saint’s name in its title.

Thankfully those unofficial employment policies adopted by the likes of Barr and Stroud seem to be less prevalent now.

    Thomthetim, thanks for your reply.

Its pleasing that Paul McGrath despite all the issues he has had to deal with, he remains a good guy.

Great reply from Rod Stewart about Charlie.

  9. Well done to the Scottish Socialist Party.

    ——-

The Scottish Socialist Party is today disappointed and dismayed by the Scottish Government’s commitment to retaining the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act.

In the University of Stirling report and statistics into the effect of the Act, it showed that conviction rates since introduction in 2012 are as low as 22% with only 143 convictions from 664 charges in relation to section 1 of the Act.

In addition, only 16 of those resulted in a football banning order, highlighting the highly disproportionate response from Police Scotland in the implementation of this Act to what are often petty and low-grade offences, if an offence has occurred at all. The threating communications part of the Act has also only seen 36 people charged, with a mere 15 of these, less than half, coming from a football related incident.

Liam McLaughlan, SSP Executive Committee member added “This report proves what football fans, community campaigners and even members of the judiciary know all too well, this Act has been a disaster since implementation. The low levels of convictions only tell half the story. “

“The traumatic effects of being charged and dragged through the courts as a result of this Act in particular for young, working class football fans is dreadful, something the SNP would know if they either sent a representative along to any FAC meetings or were willing to debate and review this issue in the proper, transparent way in parliament that was promised back in 2012. “

“The SSP stand alongside FAC and others campaigning for the immediate repeal of this illiberal, unworkable legislation. Like members of the judiciary, we too think it is mince.”

Gilford Mill on the Bann, County Down attracted large numbers of young people from across Ulster to work the new mills at the transition of the proto-industrial period. Large numbers of semi-skilled and skilled workers were encouraged to move to Johnstone, Scotland to work the new mills on the River Cart (black) by the Quaker owners. Many also settled in Paisley and Saint Mirren still have a significant proportion of fans who are Irish Catholic ( no seriously..)

*As a young lhad I worked on the Dalmuir flats. One of the brickie squads came fae Paisley and they were all Buddies.

The squaddie was a big genial Irishman and I believe his nephew played for St. Mirren, cannae remember his name but I think he was a centre half….no not Gordon McQueen.

One feast of the Immaculate Conception myself and a Tradamus Lampada FP sneaked up tae St. Stephens for Mass. Said squaddie was also there.

There was a group of apprentice electricians fae Paisley working there as well. One of them was playing for St. Mirren at the time. Not a day went by that he wasn’t wearing a hun cap or casual.

Scored a very good goal in Argentine a few years later.

  19. A few years back I was talking to a former Celtic legend. He told us that manure had a young centre half languishing in the reserves, so he informed CP of his potentials.

We looked at him but baulked at the asking price. 100 grand for a manure reserve, you’ve got tae be kidding was the statement.

I mentioned that he was a great player but a bit too fond of the don revie. So what was the reply, still a great player. That was me told.

  20. WITS – think your wrong on loaches analysis of civil war. I took it that he took the left wing analysis as an angle not a holistic explanation of the cause of conflict. Left wing factions did largely side with republicans during that period.

I agree however that the full tale of that period is much much more nuanced than that.

  21. Beefheart – left wing bore? It must be boring to be asked to organise society more fairly and give up some of your wealth so everyone can have a,fair share.

You inspire me to stay left. Well done

It would have been some experience for Ciaran training with those clubs down the road.

The Eire England game in 1988 was a great day. Heraghty’s had no all day Sunday licence so we watched it at Clemenza’s flat. Great result and many cans and pints of swallay were taken during and after the game. Heraghty’s was at its best that night.

Regarding the emigration to the USA via Scotland. A passage your Uncle Jim took if I’m correct.

Your gran and two of her brothers moved to the States, at separate times, with your gran returning home via London and with your Grandad, so my dad told me.

Check out etims twitter, they have some tweets about how Ronny’s plans for the players from academy to development squad. Aidan Nesbitt gets a mention.

Ronny apparently wants all the players to train together for a week or two with first team squad then train with away from them.

The juvenile and youth team players are seemingly well impressed with Ronny’s plans.

  23. The best of Hugh McIlvanney, would have to include his description of the Welsh boxer Johnny Owen who died of injuries sustained in the ring. “It was boxing that gave Johnny Owen his one positive means of self-expression… It is his tragedy that he found himself articulate in such a dangerous language.”

Hugh McIlvanney’s piece on Johnny Owen is the best piece of sports journalism I’ve read.

Would Really Like One of The Really Clever( And there Are Many) posters on CQN to Answer this……..IF warburrton becomes Sevco manager……Whats in It For HIM..Serious Question….Still an IF i Know…

    ————–

    I posted a theory earlier:

Sevco need to shift season tickets. Appoint Warburton/Weir. Warburton seen as progressive appointment – season tickets sell.

Six months later – QPR/Fulham/Charlton need a manager – Warburton goes. Sevco get compensation. Weir gets promoted to manager.

Re what might be in it for Warburton?

Good question! I guess it keeps his profile up – rather than being out of work. Also might be in for a cut of ST money or compo fee???
