Opportunity to claim a great Celtic reputation

632

Within a few hours the first leg of our Summer Cup Final will be upon us.  Make no mistake about it, these are the biggest games of our season.

The players and manager have learned plenty about European football over the last four weeks to know the scale of the task.  Maribor will be given due respect but the importance of Saturday’s win over Dundee United cannot be overestimated.  Players’ confidence will have received a welcome boost, while some will have realised the weight of responsibility lies with them.

Since the draw I have written enough about the strengths of Maribor, but they are weak at the back – and they are showing all the signs of over-confidence.  Having watched us against Legia, this lot will be shocked if a different Celtic turn up tonight.  Their fans, media and officials are emotionally spending their Champions League windfall already.

Most of all, we need a disciplined performance from Celtic.  No conceding penalties, getting caught in possession deep in your own half, or second yellows.  Stick to the basics, stay alert and we have an excellent chance of progressing; this is not a team with irresistible talent.

For a few players, they have the chance to claim a great reputation at the club.  What an opportunity…..

Mulgrew was absolutely stinking in Warsaw. Culpable for 3 goals and Efe sending off. Keep him well clear of midfield!!!!

  2. The Champions League, at every stage for where Celtic are currently at in terms of technical ability, is going to be about energy, pressing, closing space. No room for passengers.

Work to get done before the afternoon is out…….

Solid defensive display tonight and hopefully get away goal

To be honest i obviously want to see us win and go through but iv no confidence the board will buy/loan 2/3 quality players we need for the group stages.

And i really hate seeing us get embaressed.

20m windfall is great but not when it goes straight into the safe.

I see where you are coming from but Ambrose and VVD like it or not have a partnership, that’s not something you can build in a week.

    When did Biton become Bitton?

Noticed at the weekend on the back of his shirt and thought it was a spelling mistake, but the Celtic website has an article also spelling with the double T. Did Celtic get it wrong in the first instance and are now correcting their mistake? I seem to recall when Petrov signed he was Stilian, which as soon as he went south was altered (corrected?) to Stiliyan. Does someone need some spelling lessons at our beloved club?

I demand to know the names of these people, I think we should be told.

    =========================================================

You can demand their names all you like, but you’ll never be sure if they are right as they canny spell them properly!

    I like this bit

If that happened I think an influx of people might move from Scotland to the remaining part of the U.K. to stay in the Union and the first choice of residence would probably be Northern Ireland he says. (North of Ireland in my book ).

Does he mean you as well Ernie, and all the rest of you no voters .

Fantastic 1st post, disagree with some of it & on lunch break so no time to debate!

    Welcome buddy.

Look forward to debating with you on all things Green & white!!

  11. Not only did Fergus pay out 7 or 9m or so of his own funds (what’s £2m?), he paid out the money when he had no paperwork to say he owned the business, the stadium, or the Bovril kiosk. If the deal had went belly up due to Kelly et all spitting out the dummy late in the day his funds would have vanished into the Bank of Scotland’s unlimited credit to the huns fund.

  12. Malone Bhoy

It’ll be a 4-2-3-1, in which Ambrose & Van Dijk have an appalling record. No point persevering with a poor partnership.

Having said that, I hope that Ronny finds a place for Efe (midfield?) in his unchanging formation.

Charlie was minging in Warsaw but I hope he plays tonight and gives some help to Izzy.

  15. chrisvancoupon on

My concern about tonight is the central midfield.

Charlie Mulgrew is too slow and Johansen never seems to win tussles with other players. He seems a bit weak.

Izzy needs to step up to the plate. His performances this season have been poor.

  16. In an attempt to sell more letters on replica shirts, the evil Peter Lawwel has announced that tonight’s Celtic team will be:

    Great post.

The leopard cannot change its spots, nor can the tiger change its stripes. May your stripes be green and white for evermore.

Weather in Maribor tonight is forecast to be under 19c so not a problem. Could have been a lot hotter for the Bhoys in Green.

No silly mistakes tonight – please.

I don’t know if it’s occured to you but not all No voters are “union lovers”.

Many of the ones I know are not the least bit interested in what colour of flag people wave. They are concerned with other issues such as losing their job, having to pay higher taxes to subsidise tax cuts for big business, mortgage and borrowing rates increasing when they are already struggling to make ends meet, huge start up costs for replicating Governmental Institutions, several years of hardship/instability during transitional years etc.

All for an unpredictable long term future.

It’s important to remember that No voters are not a small group of loonballs who despair at the thought of the red, white and blue flag being removed from public buildings. They are in fact the majority of people in this country who are not convinced that separation offers a brighter future. They are a group of people who realise that the UK, despite it’s many flaws, is one the best places to live in the world.

As I understand it the NHS budget in England has increased year on year.

You’re understanding is what the government has put out, it’s not necessarily factual, this government have been known to put out misinformation you know.

The NHS is an anathema to this private enterprise government and they’re deliberately precipating a crisis in the Health Service by reckless privatisation and underfunding. This government is aware the NHS is heading for a £2B shortfall in it’s budget by 2020, go figure that!!

Make no mistake, what happens in NHS England will undoubtedly happen in NHS Scotland and I suspect it’ll happen irrespective of a yes or no vote.

  22. The Green & White Tiger.

Excellent well written first post, although It will be of little surprise that I cannot agree in entirety.

What we need to know is:-

Are you part of the clique ?

Are you associated in any way with the clique ?

Do you intend joining the clique ( If they will have you ) ?

    HH and welcome.

  23. Ernie,

I’ve got to go but I’ll pick up your response in the morning.

  25. Wish I’d had that “we’re whiter than white and they’re green with envy” line an hour ago.

Office hun, who has barely mentioned football in 2 years, came over to a group of us having a blether at lunchtime. Comes out with “haw, yous should be embarrassed playing this tie tonight…where’s yer class, yer dignity and sportsmanship”.

Yes, a sevconian actually said that.

After a stunned 5 seconds I’m afraid I went off on a one man 90 second diatribe about all things hun past and present from 100 years sectarian signing policy, stealing leagues with players they couldn’t afford, bent refs, through tapping up the Cardigan from the Scotland job to stealing from face painters, plumbers and HMRC. In short a highlights (?) package of hunnery.

In the end I had to stop cos I was running out of breath and going a funny colour.

Office huns face fell off and he shuffled away muttering to himself. As I said, I wish I’d had that one line killer comment. Better for my blood pressure!
