Our redoubtable former manager

1226

No one on Celtic Quick News ever doubted Gordon Strachan, did they?

It’s been a long 8 years since that dark week but our former manager demonstrated enormous resilience to win three consecutive league titles and twice qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.  He is perfect for the Scotland role, although, to be frank, I didn’t think his squad had last night’s result in them.  Well done to all.

We have a special Father’s Day offer for the Willie Wallace book.  Order between now and Thursday morning and we’ll include a Father’s Day card, complete with your own message. See the big graphic to the right..

You can choose from two cards, see explanation and choices here, one with Tony Watt after scoring against some Spanish lot, the other with Billy McNeill receiving some trophy or other.

Click on the button below, enter the text you would like to appear in the middle of the card, and Tony will post your book off in time for Father’s Day.

    Mornin CQN

Only listened thus far to one CF tape and it has Green strongly suggesting he can influence UEFA…..

WHERE are the real investigative journalists who could assist Platini hear Green describe him as being of little affect ?

  2. AFP/Getty Images

NEIL LENNON last night admitted he would stay at Celtic for the rest of his career if he could be guaranteed a crack at the Champions League every season.

The Parkhead manager has been linked with the jobs at Everton, Stoke and Wigan this month but is adamant that nothing would tempt him from Glasgow’s East End if he knew he’d been leading them into Europe’s elite competition each term.

But despite last season’s heroics, which led to a place in the last 16, Celtic have an extra qualifying hurdle to negotiate this summer and Lennon knows there are no guarantees that his team will get to the group stages.

The 41-year-old admits he is ambitious but believes that regular Champions League nights under the floodlights at Parkhead and around Europe would satisfy his need to prove himself at the top level.

He said: “I’d like to stay consistently in the Champions League. There is a big emotional element at this club for me, I’ve been ingrained in it for 13 years.

“It would be a massive wrench for me to go elsewhere.

“If you could guarantee me being in the Champions League every year with Celtic then I would have no aspirations to go anywhere else.

“There would be no better place to be and that would satisfy me, absolutely.”

Celtic have three qualifying rounds to get through and will know their first opponents, whom they’ll play on July 15 or 16, when the draw is made on June 24. Lennon knows that with Rangers still out of the SPL, the need to be involved in the Champions League is vital to maintain a strong competitive edge in his players.

He said: “The qualifiers are dangerous games because you don’t know what’s out there.

“The most pressure I’ve felt last season in any game was Helsingborg because we knew there was so much riding on it.

“This year the pressure is alleviated a bit because of what we did last season, but on the other side the expectation is higher.

“It’s difficult because the coefficient works against us. We had to play two qualifiers last year and this season we’ll have to play three.

“They are very fraught because they are competitive games and a hell of a lot hinges on them.

“Getting to the group stages again would be a huge shot in the arm for our season.

“When Rangers come back, the Scottish game will get an edge again, but until then we’d like to be consistently in the Champions League groups.”

He described watching Celtic take the lead against Barcelona in the Catalan capital as a ‘wow’ moment and wants more of that and the feeling he experienced when his team defeated the Spanish champions at Parkhead later in the campaign.

“You are standing there in the Nou Camp watching your team and you see your team take the lead,” he said. “There are 10,000 Celtic fans there on the third tier and you score to go one up.

“You look around and go ‘wow, have we just done that?

“For the 90 minutes you are engrossed in the game and then to go and beat them at Celtic Park.

    “That exceeded expectation.

“When your team is doing what you want them to do and you’re getting results from it, there’s no better feeling.

“I want to be in management because I love the game and it’s the next best thing to playing.

“I’m in a privileged position because it’s the only thing I’ve known since probably about seven years of age.

“So I know I’m privileged to be the manager of a football team – and a great football club.

“All this talk of being linked with this, that or the other – I’m not as blase to think that I would ever go or be asked to go.

“It’s such a precarious job and I love what I do. It gives me something to get up in the morning for and challenge me every day.

“You have bad days, there are stressful days but you wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Lennon has been linked with a host of players but believes that having striker Anthony Stokes available next term will be like having another new signing – if the Irishman agrees a new contract.

Stokes missed the first half of last term but ended the season in great form and Lennon believes he can shine in the next campaign for club and country.

He added: “He is the quintessential lovable rogue. He’s had discipline problems but they were minor problems in terms of promptness and stuff like that.

“I’m not big on discipline but I expect players to respect the rules of the club.

“In fairness to him, there has been a huge change in his demeanour this season. He’s always had the talent, he’s got great movement and is good with both feet.

“He’s developing, he’s 24 now and is coming into his peak years. I think we’ve got a good player on our hands.

“He scored seven goals in 12 games when he came back from injury and had his best game in a Celtic shirt at the cup final.

“He’s a big-game player when he puts his mind to it – a very good finisher and I’d love to see him play for Ireland.

“He needs to hit the ground running next season. He’s definitely got the talent to play for Ireland.

“What he needs to do is find consistency and I’m sure he’ll do it.”

  3. at least he can spend more time listening to his own voice on sportsound……

KILMARNOCK last night parted company with controversial manager Kenny Shiels.

Mailsport understands Rugby Park chairman Michael Johnston has axed the gaffer for failing to meet contractual targets last term.

    The Ayrshire side’s third-bottom finish triggered a get-out clause.

Killie acted on that yesterday and sacked their manager, who walks away with nothing after failing to claim at least a top-eight place.

Johnston had stated Shiels’ future was under review after the SFA sanctioned the Northern Irishman for his media comments.

Shiels copped a four-game ban, two of which are suspended, for criticising the SFA’s disciplinary system and implying Celtic had undue influence on the governing body.

Shiels arrived at Rugby Park in summer 2010 as assistant to Mixu Paatelainen then stepped into the hotseat in June 2011.

  6. Looking at the latest Charlotte material: the email exchange between Regan, Whyte, and Andrew Dickson, in which RFC (NIL) veto an SFA press release regarding the validity of the club’s euro license – would appear to be prima facie evidence of an attempt to break strict UEFA rules.

The victims in this scam were Celtic and their supporters/shareholders.

The club is constantly lecturing fans on the need for fiscal discipline. But surely the board has a duty to protect the business against fraud by its competitors?

Celtic should be asking Regan for an immediate explanation regarding these emails. If none is forthcoming, then this must go to UEFA or CAS.

As for the Scottish press. I know journalists read this site, and I’d like to take this opportunity to express my utter contempt for their silence on this matter (and the wider implications of Charlotte’s material).

There is enough there to ask some very simple, but pertinent, questions. The fact that all this is being ignored is a terrible indictment of the professional standards of Scottish-based journalists, and amounts to little more than collusion is the biggest footballing scandal in British history.

  7. Italiabhoy,

While I understand your anger and contempt for Scottish sports journalists, could I suggest in a wee bit of mitigation, that, if they were to try and print what we already know, the newspapers’ editors would pull any such articles?

if you stood outside celtic park selling scaffs and bunnets with the celtic crest on them, the club would be down your throat so fast, yet the governing body that is meant to run football in this country have been proven to be in bed with the disease from govan to the extent that we have a financial deficit of around £40/£50m and they sit and do nought, am I the only person that cannot fathom this?

  14. What is behind the MSM failure to investigate or wrote about the CF revelations?

Even Thommo has not been able to publish.

So it seems there are legal restraints.

Are these just warnings from Media house or have actual injuctions been taken out and if so who has taken them out. Have all the guilty parties got together to stop this scandal going public?

An aquaintance who works in the media in England told me “off the record” of several super injunctions that had stopped various revelations last year. An English football international , one of Uk’s richest aristocrats and a couple of others I cant remember. They all stopped revelations about their private life going to press. Is this whats happening here or is it just the establishment closing ranks again to protect their favourite cheats.

There is enough to ask questions publicly, like:

I don’t think the lawyers would block that. If the editors do, then they are to blame to a cataclysmic failure of professional standards.

  18. Mullet and Co on

It should always be the case that when a sportsman enters the arena he is equal to his opponent in all but stature, physicality and mentality.

I watched Scotland lose to West Germany at Mexico 86 as an impressionable 10 year old. Gordon Strachan scored a great goal to give Scotland hope against one of the worlds finest ever teams. The wee ginger man, true to form, celebrated by mocking his own lack of height. The importance of this match couldn’t be underestimated as Scotland tried to qualify for the knock rounds yet there was this human rarity, a ginger, mocking himself in front of millions after scoring one of the best ever Scotland goals.

Gordon continues his golden thread now as Scotland manager. He will no doubt need his sense of humour in dealing with the poisoned chalice at Hampden. Winding back to the aftermath of that game in Mexico though, this 10 year old cried at the realisation that Scotland were out. I would never have the same depth of feeling for the country of my birth again in a sporting sense.

I settled down to watch Scotland v Costa Rica straight after school. The tv failed at one point and so did Scotland but by Italia 90 I was less bothered by the national team. By then I was aware that Rangers had only recently signed their first Catholic and that my older relatives carried a certain disdain for Scotland. Irelands participation in that tournament showed me there was much more passion for Ireland than for Scotland. It is only as you grow up you learn about history and values. My family for the most part hailed from Ireland. My Granny was probably black Irish of Spanish decent. The family carry a swarthy gene which lies in conflict with our geography. This is incidental but might give some readers the impression of the mongrel mentality. We celebrated that Pat Bonner save as much as that Hartson goal against Liverpool.

Sport is a great way to get even. If you will indulge me further my family struggled like many who supported Celtic. Their ability to earn money to feed the many mouths was constrained by the employers who saw fit to discriminate against on the basis of their nationality and religion. Of that there can be no dispute although the shipyard foremen, gaffers, shop owners and the well to do will deny it.Eventually concession was given and some trades were given over to Catholics who introduced their own positive discrimination. It wasn’t right that the best people for the jobs were overlooked, forced into trades that they might not have chosen but there where mouths to feed and so in certain circumstances Welder, Engineer, Plater, certain departments – became dominated by Catholics. Councils also became an avenue for employment as Catholics saught parity via political means.

A population forced into a corner but prepared to take avenues to get out but sport was a great leveller.

Can we say that Sport in Scotland has been a level playing field for anyone? The indigenous Scot, a misnomer but that is what they see themselves as, has allowed parity in employment but not in sport. Their genetic territorialism seems to see ‘sport’ as the last vestige of their reason for being.

It seems strange to patch all of this now into a twitter account called Charlotte fakes. However, what we are seeing is evidence of men canibalising sporting integrity in favour of murky business dealings and ego menia. Hopefully when all of this is out there we have a more transparent controlling authority clubs who will play by the rules necessary to keep ‘sport’ within football.

  19. Leaks and Fakes and the MSM…….

Anyone who has ever had any connection with the MSM will understand that there is no such thing as a collective party line. That won’t be a popular viewpoint from many who believe that there is and has been a conspiracy to cover up all things damaging to Rangers.

The first point in any analysis has to consider why ALL journalists would take this line. My contention is that they wouldn’t as the only motivations for doing this might be either A) Commercial and B) Emotional

Commercial considerations would include the access to exclusive stories in return for favourable reporting of a potentially damaging story. By definition “exclusive” can’t be given out to everyone. It can only be provided to a limited number , and common sense would dictate that the most influential journalists would be the ones with this relationship.

From a business perspective , Murray did the right thing in working closely with the key journalists at the most widely read publications and listened to broadcasters. During Rangers 9 in a row years, Murray delivered huge stories for his “press partners” and as Celtic were in disarray for much if that time, Rangers were the only game in town from a journalists perspective. Commercially the journalists did the right thing for their careers and their employers.

The problem that the journalists face, is that they can never turn on Murray, even when he is in his current state of “Yesterday’s Man” and effectively a busted flush reputationally . Having made their deal with the devil, they are stuck with the non criticism aspect of this bargain for the rest of their working life. Unless that is their circumstances change dramatically. The Aston for this is that they cannot be seen to turn on a source, especially one who gave them stories as valuable as Murray did.

No future or potential power would trust them if they attacked a source , when that source was no longer influential or useful. This leaves those who were outside the original group of confidantes to be appropriately critical of Murray, and some of them have been very forthright in this criticism .

The most powerful and influential journalist during Murray’s years at Ibrox was Jim Traynor. I dislike his personal style of writing and broadcasting, and despise his use of a publicly funded platform as a mechanism for attempting to silence any criticism of Murray. Traynor, much as I dislike his methods, would however have done exactly the same if Celtic were dominant and Rangers in disarray during that period. It was a commercial and career decision for him , not an emotional one.

He delivered on his side of the deal, and when he couldn’t any more he left for the one place he could attempt to continue to do so.

I don’t believe many journalists have an emotional barrier to writing stories. It may be tougher or easier if its about a club you have strong feelings for, however there will be very few journalists indeed who say to themselves , “I’m not touching that , because XYZ FC were my boyhood team”

Which leads us to Charlotte Fakes and the weeks of revelations. My view is that the inability to use the leaked documents and tapes is as much a frustration for journalists as it is for bloggers and posters on forums.

Leaks have been used before. The ” You are Sevco, that’s what we are saying” tape was a front page story and widely discussed in the media. Why was that ? Clearly because the media had absolutely no doubts that it was legitimately provided to them. They would have asked one of the individuals involved in the taped conversation whether it was genuine, and got an affirmative response. Legals are then happy, and off to Page one we go.

I suspect legal teams from a variety of media outlets have had a look at the Charlotte leaks, and have been unable to satisfy themselves that they are legally entitled to use the information. I also suspect that journalists will have contacted individuals involved in taped conversations and leaked emails to attempt to get confirmation tapes and emails are genuine.

I would suggest that this has not been forthcoming. You can understand why? Even someone who previously was prepared to confirm authenticity, will back off. They clearly have no idea what Charlotte is going to release next, and in this circumstance they will be strongly advised not to give any credibility to this source.

That doesn’t mean journalists and editors don’t believe the information is genuine. You would have to be in a state of denial that a North Korean voter hadn’t acquired to doubt the authenticity .

I have some sympathy with journalists , as they are watching a story unfold in public, and their frustration must be extreme at having to sit on the sidelines. Where my understanding stops, is why the generalities are not being discussed as opposed to the specifics. There are many angles that should be discussed in general terms, but here are 4 to be going on with.

1 Have the SFA ever broken their own rules and Fifa guidelines in favour of one or more clubs

2 The President of the SFA has claimed he never knew of side letters or questionable contracts. Why is nobody else supporting him in that assertion. What role did he undertake at Rangers, and did he ever administer any aspect of a scheme later found to breach tax rules and/or SFA guidelines

3 Why did the SPL instigate an enquiry only to look at Rangers from 2000 onwards. Why did they specifically exclude the first 2 seasons of the SPL, in which Rangers had already been found guilty , and indeed had admitted guilt , in relation to the Small Tax Case. This seems to be either a “Van Vossen” missed open goal by the SPL or something entirely more sinister

4 There has been much public debate over Rangers European licence. Much of it lead on this site by Auldheid. This debate significantly predates Charlotte, so why is this a topic the media appear not to want to discuss. The evidence provided, from legitimate analysis of public information and rules, suggests that at the very least the isueing of a licence was questionable in a year Rangers got direct access into the CL and the financial benefit that came with that.

The leaks from Charlotte appear to support the notion that the SFA know there is a problem, and were looking for to position themselves as honest broker. Whyte knew that was crazy, given he knew the full facts, and wanted this kept out of all public debate. The SFA caved, but the media shouldn’t .

  20. G’day Celts, cracking morning and busy along the beach earlier, a 30k cycle already under the belt (thumbs up).

    V

  21. Journalists can get around legal restraints when they want to – that’s why newspapers employ lawyers.

Articles are often written about speculation, and as long as they throw in “allegedly” and “if this is true/ genuine” here and there they are ok. Anyone can speculate without making direct allegations.

“Let’s suppose for a moment that everything Charlotte has posted turns out to be genuine. It might all be made up like a lot of “internet revalations” of course. But if it is indeed genuine then many of those involved in the running of Scottish football have a lot of questions to answer.”

  22. Celtic_First on

    Bamboo

OG Rafferty knows more about this than I do, but I got the impression the last time Channel 4 appeared to be ready to run with something that it took cold feet because of the provenance of the material, especially in the wake of Levinson.

The part of the code of conduct that comes into play here is principle number five:

A journalist obtains material by honest, straight-forward and open means, with the exception of investigations that are both overwhelmingly in the public interest and which involve evidence that cannot be obtained by straightforward means.

You could argue that it would not be possible to obtain the Charlotte Fakes evidence by straightforward means, but you’d perhaps need to write some cheques to some lawyers.

Interestingly, I think, is that principle number eight also ought to come into play and, maybe, outweigh number five. Number eight says:

A journalist resists threats or any other inducements to influence, distort or suppress information, and takes no unfair personal advantage of information gained in the course of her/his duties before the information is public knowledge.

    Thanks for answering last night.

The most recent audio from Charlotte appears to include an exchange in which Charles and Craig decide that they can use Bill Kenwright to put some extra pressure on Duff and Phelps.

In May 2012, D and P were very worried about running out of cash before finding a buyer for Craig Whyte’s shares and the assets of Rangers. To, ahem, convince them to accept the Charles Green bid, Charles suggested getting Bill Kenwright to call D and P and say he was going to be late with a payment to Rangers (presumably for Jelavic).

“Bill’s a good guy,” Craig is apparently heard to say.

We don’t know if Kenwright made that call. But I’m guessing Evertonians won’t be delighted at his name coming up in this mess.

Barcabhoy, Can the Charlotte Fakes leaks not now be published due to the interest in them? Is there no legal loophole. I frankly don’t believe that this stuff is not in the interests of the common man. We need the press to summarise this for those that only believe the print media. Surely there is some precedent in the Giggs super injunction being gotten at by the Herald. Scots Law vs English Law.

We have the SFA implicated in copying press releases for approval to Rangers. This is a story on its own but the content as others are discussing indicates they were trying to get thier story stright on Rangers License issue. It must give Auldheid a glow this morning to realise he had them bang to rights on this. Rangers owed on the wee tax case and should not have been awarded a license for the years this was outstanding. How long was this bill owed for?

We also now have Dave King e-mails with dark mutterings over huge sums of unpaid tax in South Africa. What exactly does Jack Irvine mean when he states that it is good that most of the witnesses are dead? This evidence also points towards Rangers looking to involve a clean Mr King via bribes to SARS officials? This isn’t news? EH? Lickspittles like Keevins must be birling.

Futhermore there is the evidence that implies the Media were complicit in everything that Irvine was punting to them.

Then there is the Green stuff. The former figure head of Rangers makes statements that he can bribe UEFA officials and that isn’t news?

Whyte calls McCoist a crap manager, disorganised, saved by the clubs troubles and his ability to work the media and thereby manipulate fans?

Bain – allegations from Whyte that he was stealing from charity and linked evidence last night that this could be backed up. Further from Irvine suggesting that officials and directors at Rangers were furthering their own business at the expense of the club. He asks for this evidence so he must know it exists. Strange that Jack does this as we were always of the belief that he was using the dark arts to help his pal Murray but clearly his love of the folding stuff is more important… unless he knew that there was an end game to deliver the club to a clean Dave King?

Campbell Ogilvie lying about his EBT knowledge.

The SFA not commenting on the relationship between Green and Whyte and who will own the assets even after hours of audio detailing their business plans. fingers in their ears.

    Celtic_First,

The English FA might be interested in some of those tapes. Mind you they could probably be bribed as well.

Total corruption of a simple game.

  26. Mullet and Co on

The tapes so far implicate – Ogilvie, Reagan, Bain, Green, Whyte, Bill Kenwright, The beast, Greek UEFA official, Duff and Phelps, BDO (Whyte heard to say they don’t give a ****), McCoist, Smith, King,…. any others?

These folk must dread the latest ping on their twitter.

Catching up a bit. Logged on late last night thinking it would have been a quiet day. Then saw all the Charlotte stuff. Dynamite!

    Those emails were just amazing.

    Regan:

.”Since the potential liability was under discussion by Rangers FC and HM Revenue & Customs as at31st March 2011, it could not be considered an overdue payable as defined by Article 50.We are satisfied that the evidence from all parties complied with Article 50 and, on that basis, alicence was awarded for season 2011-12.

    ———————————————————————————————————-

Now my recollection of this was that the bill was for £4.2m, made up of £2.8m in taxes and £1.4m in penalties. It was ONLY the penalties that were being disputed – NOT the actual taxes. Therefore for Regan to say that they had no overdue taxes is at best misleading and at worst……

Hello Walter this is journalist X. Could you verify why you were given an EBT ahem loan by Rangers when you where unemployed?

Hello Graeme this is journalist X. Could you verify why you were given an EBT ahem loan by Rangers when you where employed by Blackburn Rovers?

Hello Bill (Kenwright). How much did you pay for Jelavic? Did you delay any payments? (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2104025/Craig-Whyte-used-24m-season-ticket-money-pay-bank.html)

Hi Walter, what exaclty is your role at Ibrox and do you find it difficult coming into work every day not knowing who owns the club? ….

I have long harboured deep suspicions regarding the peculiar circumstances of PMcB’s sad death. The timing was very fortuitous for many imho. I strongly believe that the SFA would have been routed by now if not for that event. Paranoid perhaps, but is it any less believable than current shenanigans?
