Passing greats, breath-taking negative news placement

912

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast I did with the LostBhoys on Celtic in the 1950s (superb production quality, you should check out what they are doing), I took the opportunity to mention the Hibs team of the late forties and early fifties, including the celebrated Famous Five forwards.

They won three league titles and narrowly missed out on another two as they unequivocally dominated Scottish football.  They were probably the best team in Europe at that stage, only the lack of a formal European competition denied them recognition.  Celtic battened down the hatches against Hibs in the 1953 Coronation Cup final but nothing would be the same again for the Edinburgh club, although reputation got them an invitation to the inaugural European Cup, in which they reached the semi-final in 1956.

We learned today that the last surviving member of the Famous Five, Lawrie Reilly, died, aged 84.  Their achievement should be suitably acknowledged (this is not an endorsement of Willie Ormond’s later work, obviously).

The news that Hibs have today bid £200k for a striker is significant.  £200k doesn’t buy you much in English football but it is a substantial investment for any club, apart from Celtic.  Maybe Hibs long period in the wilderness is coming to an end.

I only caught up today on the Scottish Sun’s online coverage of the arson attack in Salsburgh (alas, not unique in the bus industry), complete with photographs of Celtic supporters and Neil Lennon (all of whom were four hundred miles from the incident).  I remember reading a story on rape, robbery and assault in London in The Sun back in the 80s, accompanied by inner-city photos featuring exclusively Afro-Caribbean-Londoners going about their business.  Real subtle.

Remember the email Charlotte Fakes produced on negative news stories against ‘other’ clubs being planted?  Utterly breath-taking.  Scottish football, as it was, and for some, still is, is inherently an unstable influence on Scottish society.  We need to take our business elsewhere and I don’t believe any of our top-flight colleagues would object.

Cheers. Won’t be in the winners enclosure tomorrow, just looking for some good signs. Definitely got the best jockey in the race, just unlikely to have the best horse:-)

I was at Brentford. I heard no Rigby songs before, during or after the game. None

    ………..

The zombie lies started 3hrs before the game, when they were reporting we were singing songs about Lee Rigby AT the game, stupid Huns couldn’t even time their lies properly.

My brother was at the game and also heard nothing of the sort.

Hun propaganda made up bull, but still could be very damaging if the English sun prints the lies, I expect our club to act on this.

stephbhoy – your beef is not with the squaddies, but the politicians who sent them to do their bidding, including one former Celtic chairman.

Steph- my concern isnt that they are doing it- I know how low they would go to get at us- my worry is that its organised

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

if history has taught us anything it is that they have organised smear campains against our club since day dot. am no in a popluarity contest celtic are my club and i know what happens as do you and many others.

if people want to beleive it they will (see rangers are the same club for further details)

  6. Steph

Absolutely they will be told, but the damage is done once it goes to print, no matter what the truth is, wed end up with a page 19 retraction and half hearted apology, IF these rumours are true then you’d be hoping the Clubs lawyers would be all over the sun.

Over in turkey on holiday had a good blether today with some spurs boys they reckon huddlestone is nailed on for Fulham, but have said their manager is a big fan of hooper, if the price is right they will deal apparently.

Not a sevconian in site, could be interesting around the pool tomorrow right enough if the sun print the story being alluded to earlier.

I dont think that child will have any trouble in flourishing

I have more concern for the thousands of children born into poverty across the country

    Sorry

  9. Something bad must be happening to them soon, is there some sort of judgement due or something like that ?

Could it be that there’s an administration/liquidation 2 just round the corner ?

This is a particularly nasty piece set up to sour our reputation in England, did they hear we were making inroads into moving ?

  10. Bus fires

I seem to remember that Peter Harte suffered a few bus fires in Greenock when he was in a “bus war” with another company whose name escapes me……..

  11. Stairheedrammy on

Just off the Brentford forum seeing what they are saying- its infested with zombies so thick that they are calling themselves names like Brentfordloyal. While the Brentford fans are pointing out no such songs were heard the dobbers are moving on to crap about us desecrating war memorials whilst in Belfast. To be honest they seem to be seeing through the thick dobbers on there

  12. Squire, do you equate wealth and privilege with flourishing? The child faces a horrible form of life which is too surreal to contemplate.

I hate the hypocrisy of war, war sees ordinary people die, squaddies, husbands, wife’s, mothers, grandparents etc… from both sides. people are expected to fall into line with the propaganda of ‘help for hero’s, poppy etc… while the government does not look after wars victims.

there is nothing to celebrate in war, but we have made it so, with massive homecoming parades etc… and for what, imho so that the masses see the ordinary people on the front line, and all to often that means they forget why war takes place in the first place, which in todays world is more often than not about black gold etc…

question it at your peril, you will be roundly condemned by all, so everyone goes along with it, does not question it and the status quo just keeps feeding itself

I may be a consume, but ghod gave me a brain and I intend to use it to the best of my ability, even it others would rather I did not. I think many celtic supporters are likeminded.

  14. I wouldn’t mind so much if they had to live off their own backs, you know the sort of thing, a days work, but no, just another state scrounger who is talking the food from the mouths of the poor.

    O Neil… are you mingwall ?

All you ever post is anti the Celtic support

Stephbhoy- Iraq was /is a political war.

I long to see the day when Bush and Blair are brought to book, but that is not going to happen.

As for the parades I think they are just to welcome home the troops; I don’t see much exultation in them [ except amongst Sevconians, but they believe withholding taxes is quintessentially patriotic]

If Iraq and Afghanistan demonstrate anything it is the failure of the ‘military’ solution.

  18. Che 21:27 on 22 July, 2013

I think a front page apology would be required and I think they would get it, if the claims cant be substantiated. If they refuse you take them to the highest court in the land and sue for wealth of the radar and you’ll be on BBC primetime every time your at court with our case. another disaster for the MSM and standards.

funny how nobody in the stadium heard anything untoward is it not?

  19. Sorry john but I can’t feel anything for the royal wean. Why should I? Complete sham of establishment encapsulated in this nonsense.

If we had a proper PR/Press Officer,a lot of the guff in the rags would not get printed due to possible legal action IMO.The Club seem happy for sites like this to fight their/our battles.
