Passing greats, breath-taking negative news placement

912

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast I did with the LostBhoys on Celtic in the 1950s (superb production quality, you should check out what they are doing), I took the opportunity to mention the Hibs team of the late forties and early fifties, including the celebrated Famous Five forwards.

They won three league titles and narrowly missed out on another two as they unequivocally dominated Scottish football.  They were probably the best team in Europe at that stage, only the lack of a formal European competition denied them recognition.  Celtic battened down the hatches against Hibs in the 1953 Coronation Cup final but nothing would be the same again for the Edinburgh club, although reputation got them an invitation to the inaugural European Cup, in which they reached the semi-final in 1956.

We learned today that the last surviving member of the Famous Five, Lawrie Reilly, died, aged 84.  Their achievement should be suitably acknowledged (this is not an endorsement of Willie Ormond’s later work, obviously).

The news that Hibs have today bid £200k for a striker is significant.  £200k doesn’t buy you much in English football but it is a substantial investment for any club, apart from Celtic.  Maybe Hibs long period in the wilderness is coming to an end.

I only caught up today on the Scottish Sun’s online coverage of the arson attack in Salsburgh (alas, not unique in the bus industry), complete with photographs of Celtic supporters and Neil Lennon (all of whom were four hundred miles from the incident).  I remember reading a story on rape, robbery and assault in London in The Sun back in the 80s, accompanied by inner-city photos featuring exclusively Afro-Caribbean-Londoners going about their business.  Real subtle.

Remember the email Charlotte Fakes produced on negative news stories against ‘other’ clubs being planted?  Utterly breath-taking.  Scottish football, as it was, and for some, still is, is inherently an unstable influence on Scottish society.  We need to take our business elsewhere and I don’t believe any of our top-flight colleagues would object.

It’s often said on here that you learn something new every day, well this hun taught me quite a bit as he rips into OR (who I’m led to believe is a Celtic fan called OurRivalry). T

lets bury once and for all this head in the sand mentality, that OR claims we have. one, celtic have a trading company formed in 2001, which has shareholders deficit of 32 million. two, mr eric riley quotes they are carrying forward losses of 33 million. three, they have secured 35 million against their assets, all of the assets they have. worse cooperative bank the mortgagee, is demanding from them payment in full, their lending, in five years time. their ability to watch football matches at celtic park in 5 years is in severe jeopardy, and if they don’t get c/l group stages on current operating cost’s could be looking at a possible 15 million fresh deficit, with no were to go to secure these potential losses against.

now OR and all lurkers, this is not made up, nor conjecture, nor pie in the sky. this is according to your club’s financial statements, and freely available for all to read, and for goodness sake read them and read them carefully. your risk score was amended on feb the 18th of this year, based on the facts I am quoting. now this is not whataboutery (whatever that means) but good ould fashioned facts. now OR please when telling us we are burying our heads in the sand please think of all the above, digest were your club and their financial structure has brought your club to, the real possibility of your ground being seized and lost and sold to repay your secured 35 millions of debt. you have been warned.

our club I will repeat, will meet all its operating cost’s for the year coming in, we don’t need a credit facility as we have actual liquidity in the bank called actual, real, and usable and able to draw from, cash in the bank. not an overdraft facility, not even loans to meet the club’s losses, but actual money.

OR selah (think on these things)

and another thing OR, your club technically have used money they never brought in to win silverware. you have borrowed 35 millions, to maintain your struggle to keep up with rangers. borrowed money you neither had nor were capable of bringing in through your companies (plural!) business structure. borrowed to win championships, borrowed to win trophies, paid salaries that you couldn’t afford, bought player’s you couldn’t afford all borrowed, because you were incapable of bringing in the money you were expending.

one question, is borrowing money you don’t have and cant pay back on your current companies (plural) business structure, a form of financial doping? is it cheating?

  5. What league would take us MM? We’d hafta be part of a league started from scratch that doesn’t include anyone from any of the major moneymakers. The top 5 uefa countries wouldnt think of having us because we are too big. If we had their money they woudnt have their money. We are arguably the largest supported club in the world.

  6. A Stor Mo Chroi on

If all these CharlotteFakeover revelations are to be believed, I personally have confidence in their veracity, then surely if Celtic were deliberately smeared in national media it would have an adverse effect on the corporate and social standing of our club. I’ve no idea how you would quantify it but I bet our sponsors were not too happy to hear what Pat Nevin and Rob McLean had to say about Celtic Supporters singing sectarian songs at Hampden.

Celtic apparently took the BBC to task on that one, but I don’t remember any public apology from either Rob McClean, or Pat Nevin, or the BBC for that matter although, in fairness, I can’t honestly say I’ve heard either of them raise the subject since.

No need, say the more cynical amongst you… Rob and Pat did a grand job. Yeah, I suppose when I stop to think about it, credit where credit is due, they did.

Jackie is a gentleman to the last as Lurgan legend gifts his medals to football crazy Jay..

Belfast Celtic and Glenavon legend Jackie Denver made a heartwarming final gesture to a young football fan just weeks before he died.

Jay Beatty, from Lurgan, the mascot for his beloved Celtic Club (Lurgan No 1) was thrilled when 87-year-old Jackie, also from the Co Armagh town, sent him down a winner’s medal to look at last month and two Belfast Celtic medals to keep.

The nine-year-old, who has Down’s syndrome, counts them among his prized possessions.

Jay was also excited to be selected as the mascot for Celtic in their big Champions League clash against Cliftonville at Solitude last week.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon, a fellow Lurgan man, had Jay training on the pitch with his players last Wednesday following the heartwarming medal gesture from Jackie.

The passing of Jackie on Sunday means that only Jimmy Jones, of a famous threesome with Wilbur Cush who helped Glenavon take the Irish League Championship out of Belfast for the first time in the 1951-52 season, is still alive.

Jackie, whose wife Patsy died a few years ago, is survived by his children Alan, Alex, Pamela and six grandchildren. His funeral service will be conducted in Shankill Parish Church in Lurgan tomorrow at 2pm by Canon John Moore and he will be laid to rest in Lurgan Cemetery.

Alex said: “I never saw my dad playing, he had retired before I was born, but I am constantly told what a wonderful player he was and how he and Billy Cush, his cousin, and Jones fitted in so well together.

“Jimmy isn’t too well these days, but his son Trevor is hoping to get him to the funeral.”

Belfast Celtic Society chairman Padraig Coyle paid tribute, saying “Irish football has lost a legend and a gentleman”.

“Jackie battled bravely for years against serious illness but never lost his passion for the game,” he added.

The football veteran had a memorable career at Belfast Celtic and with Glenavon.

“He was the best uncapped player to come out of Northern Ireland,” journalist Gordon Hanna said.

Ironically, both Jones and Cush won Northern Ireland caps.

“Glenavon, managed by Jimmy McAlinden, were 10 points ahead of the field in that title-winning season,” added Hanna.

“They inspired a great team which is remembered to this day.”

Celtic historian Martin Flynn said: “Jackie was special for Celtic and equally special for Glenavon afterwards.

“He and Jones remained firm friends in their retirement and Jackie was proud that his son Alex also played for the Lurgan club and later was involved with their junior academy.

“When there was a Celtic or Glenavon event or ceremony you could be sure both of them would be there, and both sets of fans were always delighted to see them.

“It was a great sadness for both of them that the other ‘Musketeer’, as the three of them were nicknamed at Mourneview Park, died prematurely years ago.”

    PROFILE

Jackie joined Celtic from Shankill Young Men in Lurgan and with Jones, who also began his career at Celtic Park, helped manager Elisha Scott win many trophies before that dark afternoon in December 1948 when Jones was attacked and injured during a pitch invasion at Windsor Park. Celtic toured the USA in 1949 but left the Irish League soon afterwards.

Lennon slams Davies over BBC leak

Billy Davies newsNeil Lennon has slammed Billy Davies for his attempt to re-sign Kelvin Wilson.

Despite freezing the defender out of football and rejecting a £300,000 offer with four months remaining on his contract Davies wants to take Wilson back to the City Ground.

Celtic instantly knocked back a bid of £1.5m made on Friday with Davies immediately making sure that news of the offer was made public.

Lennon explained: “A bid came in on Friday and they leaked it to the BBC 20 minutes later- which we weren’t delighted about.

“It’s as you were unless they come back or another club comes in but he is our player, we like him. He had a good season last year so we do not want to sell. He was really consistent for us last year, particularly in Europe. I’m just going to speak to him regarding the situation now.”

Lennon’s biggest dilemma is over Gary Hooper.

Celtic’s top scorer for the last three seasons is wanted by a number of English sides but no one has yet to reach an agreement with Celtic and the player.

Last week he seemed close to a move to QPR but with Harry Redknapp in plaster and the club in turmoil Hooper seems to have gone cold on that option.

Norwich City, West Ham United and Hull City are all keeping tabs on the situation while Lennon looks to the striker to steer Celtic past Elfsborg into at worst a place in the Europa League.

Assessing the current position Lennon admitted: “I don’t know where Gary’s head is right now. He looked good in training so we’ll just see where he is mentally, but I’d like to play him if I could.

“There is no change in his situation, just talks on-going between the club and his representatives.”

  22. Morning all…. As an aside, and forgive me if this has been covered previously…. Given that CP is hosting the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games and presumably out of action for a few weeks, where will CL qualifiers be played next season? (assuming we don’t win it). Murrayfield looks to be the only decent sized stadium left….
