Passing greats, breath-taking negative news placement

912

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast I did with the LostBhoys on Celtic in the 1950s (superb production quality, you should check out what they are doing), I took the opportunity to mention the Hibs team of the late forties and early fifties, including the celebrated Famous Five forwards.

They won three league titles and narrowly missed out on another two as they unequivocally dominated Scottish football.  They were probably the best team in Europe at that stage, only the lack of a formal European competition denied them recognition.  Celtic battened down the hatches against Hibs in the 1953 Coronation Cup final but nothing would be the same again for the Edinburgh club, although reputation got them an invitation to the inaugural European Cup, in which they reached the semi-final in 1956.

We learned today that the last surviving member of the Famous Five, Lawrie Reilly, died, aged 84.  Their achievement should be suitably acknowledged (this is not an endorsement of Willie Ormond’s later work, obviously).

The news that Hibs have today bid £200k for a striker is significant.  £200k doesn’t buy you much in English football but it is a substantial investment for any club, apart from Celtic.  Maybe Hibs long period in the wilderness is coming to an end.

I only caught up today on the Scottish Sun’s online coverage of the arson attack in Salsburgh (alas, not unique in the bus industry), complete with photographs of Celtic supporters and Neil Lennon (all of whom were four hundred miles from the incident).  I remember reading a story on rape, robbery and assault in London in The Sun back in the 80s, accompanied by inner-city photos featuring exclusively Afro-Caribbean-Londoners going about their business.  Real subtle.

Remember the email Charlotte Fakes produced on negative news stories against ‘other’ clubs being planted?  Utterly breath-taking.  Scottish football, as it was, and for some, still is, is inherently an unstable influence on Scottish society.  We need to take our business elsewhere and I don’t believe any of our top-flight colleagues would object.

    Celtic’s Cash Crisis

Top brass at Celtic FC are in the midst of a cash crisis that could yet rival the sums that brought down Rangers last year.

Chief Peter Lawwell and his fellow Celtic Park suits are facing an unprecedented challenge in how to steer the Glasgow giants through what is just the latest in a series of cash conundrums.

With the annual report due to be published in little more than 4 weeks, time is running out for desperate Lawwell and his high powered team to find a solution.

Having slashed season tickets and gate prices, the club’s Directors recently sanctioned a vast redevelopment of the area around Celtic Park – the £10 Million Celtic Triangle – and have since spent huge sums on upgrading the stadium, providing additional facilities to enhance the match day experience for supporters.

On the pitch, the Parkhead outfit have gone large in the early part of the transfer window, signing towering striker Amido Balde from Portuguese cracks Vitória Guimarães, Holland’s top defensive prospect Virgil van Djik, and French star Steven Mouyokolo. Team boss Lennon is likely to indulge in even more spending before the transfer window slams shut.

The club are burning cash at an alarming rate, and a Celtic insider revealed: “With the club run on a break even model from domestic football, the Champions League money, the cash for Wanyama, and the club about to reveal record breaking profits, we’ve got millions in the bank. The Directors just don’t know what to do with all this cash. It’s a nightmare.”

Old Firm Cash Crisis – How it breaks down:

    £75 Million

Celtic’s project sales revenue, and the sum at stake in Ranger’s Big Tax Case

    £22 Million

The cash received by Celtic from UEFA for last season’s run to the last 16 of the Champions League, and the sum The Rangers newco raised in it’s AIM flotation.

    £14 Million

Celtic’s pre tax profit for just the first 6 months of the financial year, and the sum owed by Ranger’s to HMRC for unpaid VAT and payroll tax.

    £12 Million

The cash Celtic received from Southampton for Victor Wanyama, and the forecast 1st year losses at The Rangers newco.

  4. Currently stopped at Girvan, a packed early sailing. Reds have sold approx 1100 tickets for tonight. Should be a great occasion again. Is there a CQN meet up later in the city centre? Wouldn’t mind saying hello if anyone about, staying at the Park Inn.

    Captured.

  5. Great memories about the vinyl. I remember growing up with the songs and also wondering why some of the great tunes were never sung at Parkhead.

Totally agree with Paul 67 that we need to take our business elsewhere. Scottish football is stifling us. If we played in the EPL,the quote ” We would be hated by about 60%” seems to me a far better percentage than what we currently endure. Apart from the obvious antagonism from the football authorities over many years we need to look as a matter of urgency from a footballing perspective.

The standard of football is generally poor and gradually getting worse. Entry to Champions league football is going to get more difficult as the coefficient will continue to erode by the abject failure of Scottish teams ( excepting Celtic ) to make any progress. It seems ludicrous that we get to the last 16 but still go backwards, but this is the world in which we operate.

On another topic; the abuse that John O Neil has taken is way over the top. Free speech within reason is fundamental to any blog and indeed society. The phrase ” Conform or be bullied” although probably referenced in jest, should alert CQN’ers.

Finally after some great golf ( Shame about the venue ) I don’t get the hypocrisy from Cameron, Salmond and the rest of the usual suspects unfailingly condemning discrimination of females yet not uttering a word on the discrimination against Catholics.

yes I seen it. I was expecting her to be 25/1 minimum. When I saw her gambled from 16’s to 8s, I was more than curious. I called the stable immediately and they are as baffled as me. She is not a no hoper but first run for 400+ days, first time over hurdles, first time in a tongue tie, first time at the distance? No idea who seen fit to hammer her from her early price.

If it’s clear she ain’t gonna be winning from some way out, I dont want her knocked about as she’ll definitely come on for the run and be a more interesting prospect next time out.

On the other hand, Ogee in the 3.45, can take some knocking about. He’s older and needs a few reminders. Tends to labour a few furlongs from home then take up the bit again. He might do ok today though I think Cockney Trucker is due another win, but McCarthy rides Ogee and knows the horse so well I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stick his nose in front if the rain hasn’t softened up the track too much.

I suppose that in a way John O’Neil is right.

What chance does a newborn baby have, whose gene pool is made up of the most power-hungry, wicked, murderous, rapacious, greedy, selfish & duplicitous creatures these islands have ever produced ?

So, I do feel sorry for the new arrival.

    Long live the King.

Significant portion of their gene pool is Greek and German.Would that explain it ?

Are you at the wind-up, Macjay ?

The Greek & German inputs to the family we laughingly call the Windsors, were ALL related to the rulers of Britain & the Empire on which the sun never set. They are ALL the same inbred, power-mad family.

Long live our wee, brand new ruler.

We get ( & deserve) what we are prepared to accept.

Uefa will one day realise what the American NFL did as far back as the 60s….without competition any sport is doomed. A closed shop has already formed in the CL and apart from Man C and PSG gatecrashing it with Billionaire backing, itll be practically the same last 8 every season.

The issue for me is that many huge clubs are looking in from the outside with no hope of getting there. We are one of those disadvantaged clubs.

Platini must look at us playing a CL qualifier mid pre season and then think back to Seville 03, where he admitted that Celtic and their support single handedly put the Uefa Cup back in the spotlight.

The Americans usually always get it right in sport. The German FA admitted to adopting their model 10 years ago and look at the success there.

  21. Lashing rain here, ffs middle of summer and we have to put up with this bloody weather. See papers linking us to Kevin Doyle again, cue for the knockers to line up and have a go. I’ve seen that lad play many times for Cork City and have always liked him and followed his career. Quite obviously his move to Wolves hasn’t worked, but prior to this he had been averaging a bit better then a goal every 3 games. I genuinely believe there is still an awful lot left in this guy and that he would score a lot of goals in the SPFL. Personally I’d be delighted if we signed him.
