Performing with an edge, naked opportunism

1065

If you were a professional football player, you would love to be in the Celtic dressing room tomorrow evening.  You would have the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself; put in a big, meaningful performance.  Record a bit of history and create a uniquely memorable victory.

There are some players who are fraught with anxiety on such occasions, but there are others who NEED these games, need an edge, to reach their peak.  If we have a team full of the latter, Legia are in for a torrid night.

I’m doing my best to ignore the naked opportunism in our media this week.  There is no point complaining about it, lose heavily and you become vulnerable to those who live to revel in a Celtic defeat.  Don’t lose and you don’t give them (friends and foes alike) a chance.

We’ve been here before.  Artmedia, Braga, Utrecht, Sion (despite the reprieve) and Karagandy all exposed an aching heart.  European football is unforgiving, try to transition and you’ll find someone ready to exploit, but that doesn’t mean you are wrong to transition.

We might talk about this transition more later in the month but we have a game to win first.  Can’t wait.

Check out the fantastic work by the cyclists who are taking part in the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle 2014 on 6 September. You can join them – all you need is a bike. Get involved, you’ll be delighted you did, I promise. Read about it here.

  1. Does anyone know of a street close to Murrayfield where I can park my car for tomorrow night’s game?

Re McIntosh and Ross. Their kids go to St.Aloysius’ College.

UEFA are killing the game across Europe in smaller nations.

As I have previously posted. Never forget that one of the original, if not actually the original architect of the death of small nations in European football is sitting in a cushy football relaled job in the south side of Glasgow. Step for a hint. He was once the only RC at Ibrox

Joe Miller there on Clyde 1 saying that people he knows have turned down the Celtic job on the basis that they could not choose their own players. This policy is in line with what p67 has outlined so would those saying that the manager chooses the players care to consider this?

  6. Transition , a word we seem to hear a lot these days, yes quite a lot, almost every season in fact. Forster, Matthews, Van Dyke, Efe, Commons Stokes and uncle Tom Cobbley and all being sought by other clubs. You really need great patience to be a Celtic supporter in recent years. Neil builds a team loses his best players and builds again and half of them are for the off, like shuffling shit up a ladder I think is the appropriate term.

Getting back to tomorrow night’s match. After such a successful run last season you would have put your house on Celtic’s settled team and particularly the back five to see us through against Legia and who could have seen such a collective off night by the team last week. We cannot be as bad again providing the team selection is right and our most experienced players are given the chance to put an average Polish side under pressure.

a goal each side of half time like the Karagandy game would be ideal.

    Auldheid 1838,

I read the article on Croatian football that you linked with interest. But I don`t think this tale explains or justifies our current predicament in terms of CL qualification.

We are seeded in the CL qualifiers to play against teams with smaller co-efficients and smaller budgets. This year we have been drawn against Legia Warsaw, currently ranked 108 by UEFA. Last year we were drawn against Shakhter Karagandy, ranked 236 by UEFA. We are ranked 55th.

We have a season ticket base of 36,500 and a turnover of £50 million in a Europa League year and £70 million in a Champions League year.

The cards to qualify for the CL are heavily stacked in our favour. We are not competing for qualification against clubs from the bigger and richer leagues. Instead we are competing against teams from Ireland, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

My eyes were drawn to this paragraph in the article:- “The opportunity to earn Champions League money presents a huge challenge for Dinamo. This summer, they already invested around €10 million in new signings.”

Can you imagine Celtic doing something similar? Spending 10 million Euros on new signings before the CL qualifiers begin in the hope of getting through to the CL? I for one can`t.

    Bada Bing:-

To be fair to the PLC they also took the complete Michael in the years when we had automatically qualified for the CL. For example in 2008 we win the league on the last day of the season, the Orcs are getting stronger again and what do we do with our guaranteed Champions League money to keep ourselves ahead? Sign Crosas, Loovens, Samaras and Maloney for a total £5 million while £15 million is banked.

Meantime the Orcs re-arm their team at great cost. No surprise that we lost the league and got the wooden spoon in the CL despite having Aalborg in our group.

  30. Evening folks,

Off through to the game tomorrow afternoon from South Lanarkshire. It’s my great privilege to take my 10 year old Celtic mad Nephew and his pal to their first hoops game. Both from Edinburgh so taking a rare chance to take them for an outing to see the best team in the world.

Have to be honest, I think our chances are very slim to qualify, however if we keep a clean sheet, get an early goal anything is possible.

If you have a spare 10 minutes have a look at this video on you tube from Willie Collow. 1983, Celtic 5 – Sporting Lisbon 0.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmS25xbk4xk

One of our best and perhaps unexpected European comebacks. Brings back great memories, some Celtic legends amongst that team.

Alas we have not got the same quality nowadays. We have a new manager at the start of a transitional period. However there is one constant tomorrow night and that’s our fabulous fans. So as I introduce a couple of new kids to the Celtic experience, I am sure as always the fans will show the way tomorrow night. And who knows, with the right selection from the manger, correct attitude from the players and of course lady luck on our side anything is possible. Not very probable, but possible.

So here’s to a great European comeback tomorrow night and hopefully an unforgettable experience for the two young fellas with me watching the hoops for the first time.

Don’t think we’re in disagreement mate. I was as surprised as you obviously were at the team selection last week particularly when you take Ronny’s pre match comments into account that he wouldn’t be making drastic changes too quickly.

I think this is where an assistant manager needs to earn his corn.
