Peter Lawwell on strategy and reality

Very pleased Peter Lawwell has opened up a bit today (in The Sun, I know…) on the workings of the club, I hope this is the start of a trend in more regular communication.  If there’s logical explanations for Celtic’s actions, inactions, views and general strategy, we should be giving them far more often than we have.

On the club’s financial strategy, his comments were not far removed from yesterday’s blog, “if we take the club into £20m worth of debt, and [Champions League qualification] doesn’t happen, where does that leave us?

“For a Scottish club to owe that kind of money leads to trouble. You don’t have to look very far [Govan] to see the consequences [administration and/or liquidation]of people trying things which ‘might’ happen.”

We’re only a few years from that touchstone but the point still needs to be made.

On one point, there’s probably a bit of work to do: “You’ve got social media and the bloggers, posters and trolls who think they know what’s going on at the club. They don’t.

“They don’t have all the information. The reality is different from their perception and I need to deal with reality every day.”

Social media will never have all the information, but football clubs need to find out ways to harness what is still a new and emerging phenomenon.  At the very least, they need to find ways to head off wildly inaccurate and damaging fantasies.

Everyone believes they deal with reality, not perception.  I laugh when I see new posters here saying “I’ve no axe to grind, but…….”  None of us believe we have an axe to grind, we all believe we bring reality to the debate.

Self-awareness in this respect is not part of the human condition.  If people experience, see and read certain realities, perceptions consistent with those realities are perceived as reality.

The only way around this for the club is to ensure Celtic fans have access to sufficient verifiable realities to offset perceived realities.  Let’s keep the verifiable realities coming, soon if possible.

Really hope Leigh is playing tonight, and he gets his 40th goal.  It would be a fitting achievement for a thorough professional – who never lets an opportunity to show Celtic fans how genuine his delight to be here is.

There’s a Football Forum at The Iron Horse pub, West Nile St, tomorrow [Thursday] from 18:30 until 21:00.  Three authors will talk about football within Scottish society.

Our own Alex Gordon, author or Winds of Change, Caesar & the Assassin, A Bhoy called Bertie, Celtic the Awakening and more, “will provide stories of and insights into the integrity of the Scottish football press and media”.  Alex is a former editor of the Sunday Mail, so this one should be interesting.

Sandy Jamieson, author of Celtic Submari: a new model for football relationships, among others, will also be speaking.  The third panelist is Alan Ness, author of the football novel, A Man’s Game.

There’s a £5 (to Dogs Trust charity or discount off a book) charge at the door, no tickets in advance.  Introduce yourself to Alex, if you’re there.

Really? How does that affect my point that the Arab-Israeli conflict is not as one-sided as portrayed by leftists and that Israel has both a right to exist and to defend itself?

I speak for myself and only my opinion, I get it that you don’t like PL or the board, you never come right out and say it but the snide jibes and personal opinion on him are enough for me to read between the lines all is not well with you and the CEO, and I’m assuming that the CEO couldent give a monkeys about you either, fan representation on the board will NEVER be as far away as it is now in this present day, just in comparison does the res.12 group have a PR guy? If so then in my opinion he’s out of touch too in the TLC department.

Now I’m going out on a limb here, should we all wait with baited breat as to who you think PL should have gave the interview today? Never lose the FACT that PL is the CEO of CFC , and well I kinda think he knows what he’s doing, you on the other hand obviously don’t think he does, and that his Tim is up, according to you.

I’ll step back a bit here and ask you a couple of questions if you don’t mind, and if you do fine, ….BUT who are you? Do you hold an elected title? Or are you like me just a supporter who has an opposite view on the club that I have?

I get it with the res. 12 bit, some of you have done some incredible work on that I’ll put my hands up yes no doubt about that and that should never be forgotten, but when both you and the club are pushing for the same thing in my opinion, it would be better if you where both singing from the same hym sheet, I could be wrong? Going by your posts today, I don’t see that? I see anger and finger pointing, and that does not bode well with me, but like yourself I’m just a supporter, but you took on the job of res 12 with others, get it done, then pick up the internal fighting, like your opinion on Lawwell and CFC which I respect, that’s mine on you and your res 12 team, good luck.

Now one thing struck me about Lawwell’s statement and that is his claim that his job is 24/7, right away this raises the concern that he can’t be as good as he and others claim if he cannot properly delegate or manage his time to the extent he has to work 24/7.

It also begs the question about he acquits his responsibilities when working for the SFA and the ECA, where does he get the time and how effective is he representing those organisations if he only works for Celtic Plc 24/7.

Ive refrained from the religious political debate because my personal view is that Jews, Catholics, Muslims, Protestants, etc most don’t think much about religion and are essentially secular atheists.. Only a tiny minority of each faith holds extreme views or are even active in their respective churches yet we define each of these religions by the behaviour of the minority extremists.

  18. When I first heard that Lawwell had given a interview to The Sun I thought to myself, that’s a blunder.

On reflection it’s not. He’s opening up at least and explaining Celtic’s position and reasoning for decisions taken whilst reaching a mass audience. Whether Celtic supporting non Sun readers like it or not, and I’m one of them, we need to have a relationship of sorts with the most popular tabloid. Simply put, it’s just good business practice.

The Sun apologised for their dreadful Hillsborough coverage. Well placed trusted sources lied to their journalists. They’ve paid a heavy price for that but as tabloids go I dont see any difference with their lack of morals and those of their competitors. The only noticeable difference with the Sun is, they are the nations favourite arse wipe.

I think as Celtic supporters we should recognise there is a great deal we dont know about the reality behind the scenes. The fact that Lawwell has opened up should be applauded.

Shooting him down in flames appears to be raison d’etre for many on here but I doubt that reflects the majority or anything remotely close to it.

Constructive criticism by all means but surely all of us including PL want the best for Celtic going forward, putting a team on the park that continues domestic dominance and can compete in Europe at a level that’s measurable with other clubs in a comparable financial disposition.

All this ugly in fighting isnt doing us any favours and threatens our domestic dominance.

    I want 10.

  19. Muscat_Bhoy1264 on

I have an amazing strategy. Why don’t we actually play the players we sign? It sounds mental, I know. Lawell has had an ingenious strategy over the last couple of years of buying players and then not playing them at all. I think, and this is a bit radical, if you actually allow those players we sign to play a game, it might help the club.

Or, in the case of Allan, Scepovic, Balde, Janko, Juarez, Bangura, IngeBerget, Mubarak, Cole,Blackett, Christie, Kazim Richards, Ciftci, just sign them and then not play them! If they are not good enough, why sign them in the first place?

The irony is, if we hadn’t signed all the duds we could probably have afforded one £8 million player.

  20. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION on 11TH MAY 2016 3:40 PM

First of all I have been a contributor to this blog for many many years though you are correct in that in recent times my participation has indeed been limited. I usually just leave the vitriol & poison to fester. However there comes a time when idiocy & inaccuracies must be confronted. Yesterday & today was that time.

As for your questions – You’re wrong again the Jews now have a homeland & it’s called Israel. There is not another Jewish Homeland anywhere else on the face of this planet. Palestine has never been a sovereign state of any kind. Perhaps you can show me a flag pre Israel’s existence to dispute this? Though I suspect you’ll be a long time looking for it.

While Palestine has never been a country this does not exclude one from being created in the future. Indeed if it wasn’t for outside influences & archaic ideologies (Mostly Jihadists but yes extreme beliefs from both sides). Then one may well have been created well before now.

My issue with you is there is no balance in your argument. For some reason you refuse to acknowledge Israel’s right to exist & this stance is wholly irrational & unacceptable on any level.

You may reply to this you may not but I’m done with it & you until you acknowledge the rights of both peoples eights & to support a two state solution. It’s quite simple to do so but I guess for whatever reason you just can’t muster it.

Seeing as I don’t expect you to acknowledge this simple & reasonable plan then I’ll just leave you to what you “seem” to be good at. Which is Res12.

    All the best!

  21. AULDHEID

I was just looking at the Euro rankings, Celtic are the only Scottish team in the top 200, our game has been serially mismanaged for decades and you only have to compare it to Switzerland’s where I live to see how they have grown their game which really shows up the SFA for what they are. Our internal problems aside you can’t help but reach the conclusion that we have played for years with one hand tied behind our backs…

What to do about that is of course the next question:))

    Play up Celts!

  22. The Green Man,

reading your posts you obviously have no respect for Paul67,

and his poor pathetic excuse of a site,a huns site at that,

why would you want to spend any time on here?

  23. The Offshore Game indulging in some weird metaphysical gymnastics regarding the notion of what a football club is.

The reasoning is about as nebulous as a cloud of ganja smoke.

  24. Bit disappointed to hear of the rewording of the Offshore Game report, even though it does not change anything materially in it.

Just what is it about “Rangers” that makes them different from every other club that has gone into liquidation?

I’ve no problem with their fans seeing Sevco as the spiritual successors of Rangers. That’s absolutely fine. But they are NOT the same club, no matter how many people can be pressured into saying they are.

This need to protect and preserve “Rangers” is at the heart of everything wrong with Scottish football.

  25. MUSCAT_BHOY1264 on 11TH MAY 2016 4:12 PM

So for you there’s no such thing a squad player or cover. Every player signed must be a better replacement and will then get played ahead of the previous player in that position. That’s what it sounds like you’re saying.

  26. Muscat_Bhoy1264 on

    @ Damo Lennon

    What are you talking about?

Does Israel have a right to exist? What kind of question is that? Name one existential threat to a nuclear armed country who is the largest recipient of American military aid. If you say Iran, I have to laugh.

Second question: Does Israel have a right to defend itself?

I genuinely have no idea why you are asking this question. It’s a bit like asking if Tyson Fury has a right to fight back. Of course he does, the question is obviously a lot more complex than that. Does Tyson Fury have the right to attack a granny that throws a used tissue at him?

  27. DAMO LENNON on 11TH MAY 2016 4:16 PM

I thought that change was fine, and they make it clear that stating they’re still in liquidation makes no material difference to the report, nor is the process unlikely to reach completion.

I think your comments to posters criticising CQN need context.

Many ( myself included) are long term posters who committed to the site when it was a different and better site.

It was once upon a time a genuine forum to exchange Celtic views and opinions. I think much of the negative response directed towards CQN is because the blog has become a PR machine for PL.

Folk would accept this ( as P67 has every right to say / post what he likes and determine the purpose of the blog) but there’s a kind of disingenuousness when the purpose is being dressed up in old CQN clothes but now has a different purpose.

Two entirely reasonable questions, given that Hamas is bent on the destruction of Israel.

Your Tyson Fury analogy is deeply flawed, amounting to, “Hamas can’t hurt Israel.” In fact Hamas can, and does hurt Israel, every time an Israeli citizen is killed either by their rockets or by the recent spate of knife attacks.

You seem to be suggesting Israel should just accept that the essentially harmless Hamas routinely kills their citizens.
