Peter Lawwell on strategy and reality

392

12579625.json

Very pleased Peter Lawwell has opened up a bit today (in The Sun, I know…) on the workings of the club, I hope this is the start of a trend in more regular communication.  If there’s logical explanations for Celtic’s actions, inactions, views and general strategy, we should be giving them far more often than we have.

On the club’s financial strategy, his comments were not far removed from yesterday’s blog, “if we take the club into £20m worth of debt, and [Champions League qualification] doesn’t happen, where does that leave us?

“For a Scottish club to owe that kind of money leads to trouble. You don’t have to look very far [Govan] to see the consequences [administration and/or liquidation]of people trying things which ‘might’ happen.”

We’re only a few years from that touchstone but the point still needs to be made.

On one point, there’s probably a bit of work to do: “You’ve got social media and the bloggers, posters and trolls who think they know what’s going on at the club. They don’t.

“They don’t have all the information. The reality is different from their perception and I need to deal with reality every day.”

Social media will never have all the information, but football clubs need to find out ways to harness what is still a new and emerging phenomenon.  At the very least, they need to find ways to head off wildly inaccurate and damaging fantasies.

Everyone believes they deal with reality, not perception.  I laugh when I see new posters here saying “I’ve no axe to grind, but…….”  None of us believe we have an axe to grind, we all believe we bring reality to the debate.

Self-awareness in this respect is not part of the human condition.  If people experience, see and read certain realities, perceptions consistent with those realities are perceived as reality.

The only way around this for the club is to ensure Celtic fans have access to sufficient verifiable realities to offset perceived realities.  Let’s keep the verifiable realities coming, soon if possible.

Really hope Leigh is playing tonight, and he gets his 40th goal.  It would be a fitting achievement for a thorough professional – who never lets an opportunity to show Celtic fans how genuine his delight to be here is.

There’s a Football Forum at The Iron Horse pub, West Nile St, tomorrow [Thursday] from 18:30 until 21:00.  Three authors will talk about football within Scottish society.

Our own Alex Gordon, author or Winds of Change, Caesar & the Assassin, A Bhoy called Bertie, Celtic the Awakening and more, “will provide stories of and insights into the integrity of the Scottish football press and media”.  Alex is a former editor of the Sunday Mail, so this one should be interesting.

Sandy Jamieson, author of Celtic Submari: a new model for football relationships, among others, will also be speaking.  The third panelist is Alan Ness, author of the football novel, A Man’s Game.

There’s a £5 (to Dogs Trust charity or discount off a book) charge at the door, no tickets in advance.  Introduce yourself to Alex, if you’re there.

Although I’ve never been a fan of Peter Lawwell’s I’ve always genuinely admired his PR when giving personal interviews. Today’s effort just strikes a bum note, and not just because it was in the currant bun. Sounded like a guy that’s lost his edge and it isn’t coming back. In all seriousness he should take Auldheid’s advice. He’s done his time in the firing line.

What a curious thing to say about something that has existed for only a few decades.

I think the first thing to be done is to understand how and why the state of Israel came to exist. Then take it from there.

I know it’s controversial, but I reckon we could have got Robbie Keane at Celtic a few years ago instead of signing about 5 players for upwards of 15 million.

*we had Robbie on loan and I doubt he would come back after buggeraff was allowed tae kick scheidt out of him for the whole game, bet he widnae have done that tae Robbie’s namesake.

  14. Paul i disagree with your assessment of PL interview. He is coming out making statements without actually saying anything. There are a few critical items at the forefront of the fans minds, all relating to misinformation and misrepresentation of facts with regards to Res 12, LNS verdict, and the performance and silence of refereeing in this country.

Why doesn’t he at least acknowledge these? If we he fans, shareholders and paying customers are wrong regarding the facts – why doesn’t he give us the facts – whats the secret?

Finally, he is the chairman of the club – his vehicle to the fans is surely through celtic view or celticFC. If not , surely a more credible print!

I think he has done a reasonable job at Celtic, however his relationship with the customer is an F minus!

So you think we can change history because it was “only a few decades ago?” Now THAT is a curious thing to say.

We cannot go back in time and change what happened in the late 1940’s, or the 1960’s, or the events of whatever time period you want to blame Israel for. We can only deal with the situation as it stands.

Now Israel exists whether you like it or not. What do you think should be done about it?

And btw re Spartans, their problem with paperwork pops up periodically.

2008 in a Scottish Cup tie v Elgin, where both teams fielded an ineligible player, resulting in the tie being replayed.

2011 v Culter when Keith McLeod had only signed his contract in one place, rather than two, resulting in Spartans being papped oot for fielding an imperfectly registered player.

And last year in the Lowland League Cup, when they put their goalie coach on the bench as a trialist, trialists not being permitted to play in cup ties, and got papped oot again.

It comes with the rations when the clubs are run by volunteers. Mistakes happen because the real job always takes precedence and stuff gets overlooked.

The amateurs get hammered with expulsions for their errors. Senior sides get points deductions. Others, who have the resources and the professional expertise, get told off for ther imperfections…

    Tony,

I don’t see everything as black and white as you do.

You ask who I am and if I have a title? No i don’t have a title other than Mr and have been known to answer to arse or whatever friendly invective comes my way.

My view is of no greater importance than anyone else’s – Celtic fan or not, shareholder or not , season ticket holder or not.

Nor is it the case that I don’t like the board – I don’t know them! I do disagree with some of what they do and given that this is no more than a blog – one of many in Celtic cyberspace – I offer my opinion to be agreed with or just rubbished as you choose.

I try not to give perosnal offence and will apologise immediately if I inadvertantly do.

My comments about the addressing of the bloggers are not meant to be snidey at all – I merely point out that in my opinion the whole thing was sone the wrong way round. I will also say that a few days before that meeting I recommended to someone in authority at Celtic park that the PR would be improved if Celtic got in various bloggers and gave them their place by allowing them direct access to stories coming from Celtic Park with an emphasis on the positive — Foundation, new manager, the movement on Res 12 etc.

What I didn’t expect and don’t understand is how you can brief people without fully agreeing the startegy first. That makes no sense to me and if we were all round a management table (which I frequently am) I would say the same thing openly and without either rancour or personal disagreement.

You can still disagree with someone’s stance or opinion on something and still like and respect them.

I would like the board to do some things differently. When that is the case I will say so. It doesn’t mean I dislike the people individually it is just that I don’t agree.

Re Res 12, I don’t think you will ever find a post from me which says that the board have never been on board or whatever, though a few weeks ago I did say we were at variance on how to get the whole thing to UEFA. That difference of opinion or appraoch was sorted round a table. We argued to and from in the most gentlemanly and light hearted but considered terms ( an argument being different to a fight ) and we came up with a solution.

That is one of the things I do — I am a member of the Association of Professional Mediators so where you have a disagreement always work towards what you agree on.

I have said many times I don’t believe we have the right structure for governing a football club but the PLC is the PLC.

I don’t agree with the idea of a fan on the board as I can see a conflict of interest there though I can also see the argument for supporters being able to nominate someone they trust to the board as long as they don’t expect that person to report back to them and so breach board confidentiality.

What I would prefer on that front is essentailly a membership scheme where supporters — season ticket holders, shareholders and general fans can “Buy in” to a single supporters Association who in turn have their own board of representatives and they in turn meet the PLC board on a regular basis to deal with supporter and indeed club issues.

This scheme works pretty well at Feyenoord for example.

I have no idea what any other people or group think about the idea as it is just my wee management brain that thinks this may well be an improvement on the current set up and way of doing things.

There is absolutely no reason why anyone should take any notice of my witterings at all.

However, as you raised the question about what my relationship with the board is and my view etc it is only fair I tell you what I think.

I don’t know Peter L or any other members of the board. You will know them better than me. I have dealings with the company secretary who I have a lot of time for as i know him to be a good guy – even when we disagree about something or we come at it from different angles or with different goals to achieve.

So, yes I criticise the board at times — I am not always right but nor are they.

One thing we do agree upon and I accept it totally — the board will not give a monkey’s uncle about what I have to say and I fully accept that.

But hey ya speak your mind and profer an opinion. Those who want to listen do and then agree or disagree. Those who don’t want to listen or whatever well that is their right.

Me? I just wander on hoping for a better Celtic in every way but I know I am not alone in that as everyone has their own view on what that means and entails.
