Phenomenal changes ahead for Celtic Park

915

The news yesterday from Glasgow City Council that Celtic’s planning application for the areas outside the stadium had been approved will do more than deliver shrubbery to a currently derelict landscape; your match day experience is about to be transformed.

Unless your ticket is for the executive lounges, your match day will involve turning up to a cold stadium (not a lot Celtic or the Council can do about the weather) and wait for the game to start, with rudimentary access to toilets (get in early if you want a hand towel), burgers and pies.

Celtic have been buying up land around their perimeter for years and with permission to remove the derelict London Road School, they are now in a position to provide restaurants, bars, pre and post-match entertainment.  They will also be able to bring the many thousands of artefacts which tell the story of Celtic into a dedicated museum space.

Celtic Park will become a working, 7-day-a-week, tourist destination. It’s going to be phenomenal.

Plans have been before the Council for years but although they ticked all the boxes and made enormous economic sense for an area of the city badly in need of a boost, I hear one SNP councillor spoke against plans to move the superstore from its current location to a larger area, as he felt the need to protect the interests of local Asda and Tesco superstores!

Not everyone was happy to see the club, or the area, progress.

The new edition of CQN Magazine is out and packed with great articles for and by the Celtic support.  You can flick through the magazine in the graphic below but it you want to actually read it, click on the double-headed arrow at the bottom right of the graphic.

Good news, as I posted earlier, Everton and Lenny don’t fit . Celtic and Lennon are a perfect fit.

Paddy Power have Neil as 12/1 3rd favourite to be next Everton manager. He’s behind Martines (5/6) and Malky MacKay (10/1). Can’t see any mention of Sally.

  10. Jobo, for Swally to have odds given regarding another managerial post would not be dignified.

If it is decided that it is time for the fastest wee manager ever to depart Govan, he will be parachuted directly into the position in a sensational swoop, that will stagger the footballing world, and leave the Govan and Milngavie Greggs bankrupt, as well as a tribute act football club.

Ally McCoist has ruled himself out of the Man U job. He wants to see things through to the end at Sevco just as he did with Rangers.

No. Sounds like your disappointed or sceptical. Should have been done from the start but when you see what we have been up against i.e Green Hornet . I think its an accomplishment. Another step in the right direction. Next step delivery of youth players. It definitely day s to me STICK YOUR FLOATING CASINO’S UP YOUR ARSE YOU PROVEN THIEVES LIARS CRIMINALS. It will hopefully eventually become a comfortable mecca for all of us rather than a shoap and a burger van. Next step after YOUTH fill the stadium architecturally …increase attendances yes even in these hard days. The schackels are loosening. Its a positive sign for the future. Too many Scots believing their own press I feel. Old Firm dead. Cheats and scum possibly fatally wounded. The future is bright its green and white. I am feeling positive. Very.

True story from Willie Henderson re Ferguson. He was told to block Mc Neill at corners and block his run ins. Corner kick comes over Bertie runs off the post Billy comes in one nil. Where was Ferguson? Standing near the centre circle.

The architecture of Glasgow has been a miss mash that has lacked cohesiveness ever since the M8 and Kingston Bridge approaches cut great swathes of it down.

Personally I would demolish it and the ticket office and double the width of Kerrydale Street to create an avenue that would draw the eye up towards the statuary in front of the stadium maybe with in ground lights along each side.

    Just a thought ;)

Re 1969 Scottish Cup Final. In Bobby Murdoch’s biography “All the Way with Celtic” he explains:

“Fergie! Now there a player who gets really caught up in the Old Firm ferment. He takes a real bit of stick from our players during a match and time and time is told: “Hey, if you ever lose your elbows you’d be out of the game”

Alex wades in as if his life depended on it and has no friends in green and white when he is on the field! To prove how carried away a player can get in this match, I recall very clearly an incident with Alex Ferguson late in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden in April 1969.

Rangers were 3 – 0 down with most of the game gone but they hadn’t quit. Ferguson was still running hard, chasing the goal which might unsettle us.

He and Billy McNeill clashed in the middle of the field and went down. McNeill got up first. Fergie followed and gave McNeill a real mouthful..

I ran across and shouted at the Rangers striker “You’re always looking for a fight” Fergie came at me, and tried to butt me.

I turned my head, felt his head brush my cheek, but I kept on going. I didn’t want to become involved. Alex had simply lost control”

The incident was captured on BBC in close up. Maybe we should report it to Vincent Lunny.

Although I disliked Swalex for his cynical Aberdeen team, I suppose I’ve mellowed since my youth and have to say his achievements are superb, his response when asked to go to the Bigotdome as manager was admirable and his socialist principles have not left him.
