The news yesterday from Glasgow City Council that Celtic’s planning application for the areas outside the stadium had been approved will do more than deliver shrubbery to a currently derelict landscape; your match day experience is about to be transformed.
Unless your ticket is for the executive lounges, your match day will involve turning up to a cold stadium (not a lot Celtic or the Council can do about the weather) and wait for the game to start, with rudimentary access to toilets (get in early if you want a hand towel), burgers and pies.
Celtic have been buying up land around their perimeter for years and with permission to remove the derelict London Road School, they are now in a position to provide restaurants, bars, pre and post-match entertainment. They will also be able to bring the many thousands of artefacts which tell the story of Celtic into a dedicated museum space.
Celtic Park will become a working, 7-day-a-week, tourist destination. It’s going to be phenomenal.
Plans have been before the Council for years but although they ticked all the boxes and made enormous economic sense for an area of the city badly in need of a boost, I hear one SNP councillor spoke against plans to move the superstore from its current location to a larger area, as he felt the need to protect the interests of local Asda and Tesco superstores!
Not everyone was happy to see the club, or the area, progress.
The new edition of CQN Magazine is out and packed with great articles for and by the Celtic support. You can flick through the magazine in the graphic below but it you want to actually read it, click on the double-headed arrow at the bottom right of the graphic.

You needn’t worry. Celtic already have a manager.

If the scores stay the same, Barcelona will be champions tonight.
Yes, big Zidane reminded me of Bobby Murdoch because of his size and ability. I yearn to see the likes of a Bobby or Charlie Gallagher or Paddy Crernd in a Celtic jersey. Great passers of the ball, and, although Charlie will always be my favourite Celt, Bobby is without doubt the finest Celtic player I have had the pleasure to watch. As Mr Stein said, when Bobby played, Celtic played. I have hopes that Victor Wanyama might approach his class, although his passing leaves a lot to be desired. He has many of the other attributes. What would Bobby be worth now?????
The Independent Sept 2010
Sir Alex Ferguson has one eye on November’s return fixture at Ibrox already, not least because he has it on good authority that one of Walter Smith’s assistants has a supply of his favourite Australian Shiraz, Penfold’s Grange, in the cellar. “There’ll be a glass of wine available in my office, win or lose,” he says in tonight’s programme notes. “No pressure of course, but we will be at Ibrox in November. Need I say more?”
Of course, that’s not the only reason why Ferguson actually began discussing the visit to the oak-panelled corridors of Ibrox even before he discussed the home leg yesterday, reminding us that this Champions League encounter “does bring a bit of focus on me because I am Scottish and I played for Rangers”.
It was 43 years ago this July that Ferguson received a knock on his front door as he watched athletics on television and opened it to the son of then Rangers manager, Scot Symon, who handed over his father’s address and declared that his company was requested that same evening. Ferguson, then 25, signed for £65,000 – £10,000 more than the previous record between Scottish clubs – days later and believed his career was about to explode. That it did not has been a source of regret that he still cannot entirely dispel. Even in tonight’s notes, he declares that, “For one reason or another I didn’t have the greatest time there.” One of the reasons, he has always believed, was the sectarian prejudice of a Rangers PR man Willie Allison, whom he accused of circulating whispers about his wife, the now Lady Cathy, being a Catholic. More prosaic explanations include the rapid replacement of Symon, whom Ferguson adored, with Davie White, whom he abhorred, and whose £100,000 signing of the Hibernian striker Colin Stein spelled the beginning of the end. Ferguson’s final ignominy before leaving for Falkirk included turning out for Rangers reserves and even juniors side against Glasgow University and the local corporation’s transport team. One of his reserve opponents in those days was an up-and-coming Kenny Dalglish.

Penalty for Real Madrid and red card for Málaga defender.
Cristiano Ronaldo misses. It would have been his 200th goal for Real Madrid. 21 minutes gone.
Still 1-1.
CRC – my usual Friday night then. Are you doing the quiz during the breaks between speakers?

Let us not forget that it was Glasgow City Council who allowed the old school to deteriorate in recent years, whereas Celtic had, as recently as 2009, intended to use the building as the club museum. The planning ap made it look bad, and I think they even mentioned the possibility that there might be a disused coal mine under it. They were digging deep there. The game changer is the new velodrome and sports arena across the way, the new museum will be of a similar design, the old school left looking like, well a museum really.
The ref gave a free-kick to Real Madrid in the area because the ball went off the keeper and onto a defender and back into the keeper’s arms. Indirect free-kick.
The ref should just try and score for Real Madrid.
I still have visions of standing at the front of the enclosure and marvelling at how Bobby Murdoch would win the ball in midfield and feed wee Jimmy Johnstone.
Great memories..

Charlie G played for Celtic the first time I ever saw us play in March 68 at Brockville.Him and Bobby ran the show – never really understood why players of their type went out of fashion in Britain. Artists.

Madrid Ronaldo
He blew for the indirect free from the edge of the six-yard box. All the Málaga players were on the line, but they still scored. Roque got a yellow card for protesting.
They were upset because the Málaga goalie was lying injured when the ball came back to him. He grabbed the ball and the ref blew for the free-kick.

The athletes replaced the football players unfortunately
This interview with SAF changed my view of him for the better. It’s a brilliant interview if you want to learn more about the phenomenon that was Jock Stein but its hugely revealing about SAF. His respect for and love of JS is clear and genuine.

To be fair, the goalie’s injury was his ankle was sore after blocking the Cristiano Ronaldo with it.
Neil would be mad to consider Everton.
Him and us are a perfect fit .
He can realise all his ambitions at Paradise.
