Players are not machines

Celtic will attempt to win their 29th successive game in domestic cup competitions at home to Partick Thistle tonight, whom they have beaten twice already during that run.  The only teams we have faced more often are: Aberdeen (4, including three cup finals), Motherwell (3, 2 cup finals) and Newco (3, all semi-finals).

This is as big a home banker that will exist in sport this week but you and I know our history.  Thistle are bottom of the Championship right now and the last time we faced the bottom club in that division in the League Cup at Celtic Park, we lost, to Morton, who finished the season in the same position.

Apart from the win (of course), I really want to see Callum McGregor sitting in the stand alongside us tonight.  He has achieved his Martyr of the Playing Minutes award, now we need to give him a chance to pace himself before facing the likes of Cluj next week.  The same argument could be made for James Forrest.  Players are not machines.

A bright start and no mistakes, Celtic.

Sitting is the new smoking. Apparently.

A wee run about will do him good.

Won’t need to exert himself that much vs Thistle anyway, then we can sub him after 85 mins ;)

  2. Paul 67,

We have an unprecedented treble treble.

Our focus must be the league and European football.

We have a big squad with a massive financial outlay. Use rotation for the domestic cup games, we should still have enough in our locker to win these games.

Who knows what we may even unearth. If we don’t try players we don’t know how good they are.

  3. Would love to win the League cup sending out a new treble yell,

Celtic have won 28 consecutive domestic Cup matches by a cumulative score of 85-9.

El Glasico tonight, not a crowd puller, the League Cup or Thistle these days, its for rotation Shirley?

This prong of the treble is squeezed between Killie, Hibs, and Cluj, and NFL has a big squad that needs competition.

Rest the stars, play wannabes Gordon, Frimpong, Ntcham, Hayes, Bayo, Rogic, El younoussi, Morgan, Griffiths, maybe Dembele on the bench.

Celtic fans get rested as well without the inconvenience to pony up in midweek, the ground will be half full.

Or half empty for the cynics.

  4. We have played 16 competitive games this season. Calum McGregor has had the most starts, 15 without ever being substituted. But only 1 player has featured in all 16 and that’s Ran Chrisie who has started 14 and came off the bench in another 2.

  5. GuyFawkesaforeverhero on

Good luck to the Celts tonight.

2341 is the new 4141 so it’s Jullien and Hatem on our side of the halfway line. Skipper in front with two fullbacks wide to take the throw-ins. Hayes, Rogic, Ntcham and Elyounoussi to form an impregnable wall from where we launch Der Bomber Bayo.

    Score prediction 1-0 (Christie,pen). It’ll be a classic.

  6. glendalystonsils on

The thing that most stands out from that Morton game was the record number of corners we had without scoring from any of them .

    Thankfully that’s all in the pas………….oh, wait a minute………-))

  7. Morton game. We’re Bitton and Rogic not playing in that game, perhaps their first games, either individually or together.

We could have scored twenty that night.

  8. No wholesale changes. The pre-match pragmatism of ‘play the kids’ usually turns into post-match carnage of the ‘what are you thinking Neil’ variety.

Win tonight, balance pragmatism and keep the wins going. That breeds confidence throughout the team.

I agree – and I broke my own rule last night by posting about my frustration with what I felt was the lazy over-simplification of complex issues that will impact many people in many ways. And also about the use of ill-considered labeling.

Apologies if that led on to some of the name-calling.

Looking at their stats, there is hope for them, they’re not totally struggling to score goals but their defence has been awful. Might not take McCall too long to tighten them up with a few tweaks.

Still wont save them tonight, 3-0 Celtic.

  12. My team for tonight:

Gordon, Frimpong, Ajer, Julien, Boli, Connell, Ntcham, Johnston, Elyounoussi, Rogic, Boli

Bench: Forster, Elhamed, Brown, Forrest, Griffiths, Edouard, Christie

I understand that Bauer picked up an ankle injury otherwise I would have put him in there. Too early for Jozo & Bitton.

I’m assuming MJ is fit since he’s been selected for Scotland Under-21s

Lionel Persey QC is due to deliver his proclamations on Friday. That is when the huns lawyers will be informed about the damages in pounds and pence that nice socialist person Mr. Ashley will receive. 8 – 10m will need to be found down the back of the sofa. For the huns to dismiss this as not being an issue they will need to ensure that they win the Europa league in May 2020.

I am of the opinion that as soon as this declaration is made then a chain event with Close Bros. Asset Management and Memorial Walls will seek a ring fencing of funds will occur. This will pique the curiosity of those that are owed money by the huns. They will then be able to do their own back of fag packet calculations and that will have them worried. Puma, Hummel, Elite will want

to set down a marker that if you fuck with them they will fuck back. How many football clubs are owed money or will be owed money when the players they sold have accrued the right number of games or been there long enough to trigger a payment clause.

We will see a repeat of last season. All the talk will be if they can’t sell Morelos to China or Tarvenier to Real Madrid etc. then they will be fucked. I expect that not to happen and for an admin event to take place once all hun EL interest and SPL interest has ended.

    Looking forward to tonight.

Wary of making too many changes. I seem to recall Neil was a bit prone to put out changed teams against weaker opponents and having more regular first-team players on the bench to rescue any potential problem.

All of that said – the squad seems strong :-))) – so suggest:

    Forster

Elhamed (if fit) or Frimpong, Ajer [practice not holding jumpers :-)], Julien, Taylor

    Connell, Ntcham

    Elyounoussi, Christie, Johhny-Reb

    Big French-Eddie

Win the game then bring on any three from the bench:

Bench: Gordon, Frimpong. Brown, Rogic, Forrest, Arzani, Boli, Bayo

I’m pretty sure Taylor is cup tied and can’t play.

He is. It’s Hayes or Boli tonight.

  17. As this will probably be of interest to some, I have reposted minus the swear words. Not because I am offended ( I am not) but so that the post is not deleted by the Moderators:

  18. ‘Cup tied’

What a load of shoite that is. Were they not talking a few years back about getting rid of the idea of being cup tied?

Once you sign for a new club you should be allowed to play in any game
