Postecoglou only part of the solution

371

Memories of the “second worst thing to hit Hiroshima” attempt to undermine Wim Jansen on his arrival as Celtic manager from Japanese football in 1997 remain vivid.  With no internet, we knew little of Wim.  His short stints as assistant with the Saudi national team and as manager of Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the four years since leaving Feyenoord did nothing to enhance his reputation.

Ange Postecoglou is an easier man for the support to make their own minds up about.  He has a record of developing talent, improving teams and winning titles.  By any reasonable measure, his CV is spotless.  None of his success happened in Europe and there is nowhere as acutely intense in the football roster as Glasgow, so there are hurdles to overcome.

I like that he is an established winner and that he has not relied on the chequebook to become so.  I also hear great things about his strength of character, he has old school authority, as well as a technocrats brain.

Eddie Howe went to the top of the candidate list around two months ago.  The time since has been lost, although Postecoglou was not in serious contention that far back.  We are now three weeks from preseason training.  If Ange is to be appointed, he faces a two week isolation period before being able to visit Celtic Park or Lennoxtown.  He might just make it.

Before any of that, he needs to exit Japan and his contractual arrangements with City Football Group’s Yokohama F Marinos, pack his family and belongings up and fly to the opposite end of the globe.  There is a lot of work for him to just sit at the Celtic manager’s desk.

At Howe’s request, we were prepared to recruit his entire football infrastructure.  He would have endorsed the appointment of coaches, scouts and director of football.  Celtic signed up for this but when you let them bring their encourage with them, the successful ones inevitably take the same faces (and more) back out the door with them when they go.

With Ange it will be different, although he may be familiar with some of the faces from City Football Group.  This infrastructure is equally as important as the managerial appointment.  Celtic need to rebuild a team ahead of a season that offers automatic Champions League qualification for the Scottish Premiership winners.  Much of that burden will fall on the manager’s supporting cast.  Lots to do, not a lot of time to do it in……

A quick word on Newco’s £6.75m public share offering, announced this morning.  Newco have returned an operating loss every year of their existence and have been unable to trade players to meet the shortfall.  The burden has thus far fallen on directors.  Turning to the fans may indicate a possibility the directors’ largess has dried up.  It could also imply no fresh investor has been found.

Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules mean any fresh equity investment cannot be spent on most operational costs, like football or support staff.  Competing against a team that runs a persistent eight figure annual deficit has its drawbacks, but we have seen this movie before.  We are back at the roulette table with all the chips on Champions League money.

  1. Back to basics – cheers. I get that we can only play what’s in front of us and they have no-one to blame but themselves. My original reply was to a post saying Lawell had won loads and been incredibly successful- which he has but much of that is artificially inflated by the lack of challenge. Faced with credible challenge he’s much less impressive, and ought to have had some sort of strategic plan to make us as strong as we could be when they eventually returned to challenge. He seems to have settled for “just enough” instead.

Obviously if we win 13 out of 18 going forward I’ll be delighted, but it’s not looking promising at the moment and the club/board seem to be doing little to get us out of the shambles we are in…

  5. Every CV paints’ bright picture and due diligence must occur to dive deep into it

i had a CV recently of a project engineer, it sounded wonderful, two phone calls proved was glossed over numerous items

with Postecoglou CV his south Melbourne stint has to be out in content, it was a level of Scottish junior league, if you don’t believe, just find a video of them during his time there as player and manger

he then went to socooros under 20, some sports writers called him a disaster for the under 20’s and was sacked

his time in greek 3rd division was woefull and spent next two years doing a jimmy Sanderson impression on TV sports shows

He then took on Brisbane roar during early years of A league, i watched it on TV here and saw a few games, terrible standard, reminded me of Patrick thistle v brechin city game i was dragged along to Firhill years ago . very little skill , the roar were the best of a very bad lot

off he went to the Socceroo’s to take them to two world cups in the qualifying group of 90 year granny’s( Oman, bahrain etc ) and he still struggled both times and got through as the best of the worst

then the asian cup at home v south korea and won in extra time wow

of to japan to win 1 league in 4

then his agent sends into peter L his CV and peter thinks wow, this is my redemption i can prove once and for all i know everything about football and Celtic fc is only in existence because of me

so off peter goes with his contacts to spin that this guy is great while reality is he is really just a a mike basset character who has made a living off football and done nothing of merit

Now read again paul67 piece of total tosh and tell me that it did not come from peter lawell

we hire this guy and he will be on gardening leave within 6 months and still 2.5 years left on his contract

dial down, i like what some said the other day on a Celtic state of mind, bring in Strachan or O’Neil now just to get us by until we find a a new manger

The point i’ve been making is that volatile fans in the continent mentioned would be much more aggressive and threatening if they became aware, as Celtic fans have with Lawwell, that the club they supported had a CEO who done secret deals whereby their hated rivals benefited at the expense of the club he was employed at.

SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 1ST JUNE 2021 6:26 PM – Amen!

I reckon our board and chief honcho have done some good things over their tenure but many acutely poor things ESP AMID THIS TIME OF HIGH EXPECTATIONS. So, tho’, did our coaches and players who squibbed it big time.

Unmet expectations being huge resentments in waiting, and all that.

We can bellow and bawl, insult and injure all we want but the disdain in the outrage betrays underlying character. Ange P will hold Celtic in fairly high regard – despite Scottish football being globally seen as a 2-horse, mickey mouse league. It’s a pity Ange’s respect for CFC isn’t widely reciprocated by a fanbase that vainly believes Celtic should automatically have the same drawing power of the best clubs in France, Germany or England. Scottish football is pretty comparable with the A-league, which I watch and attend regularly. Sure; there’s a mix of some shit games and great ones; like in every league in the world I guess.

So Ange, as a fellow Australian – and a longstanding Tic fan – I’m proudly backing you if you get the new role. Completely unsure if you’ll be a success but you have way more qualifications for this job than any internet blowhards or self-styled custodians of truth (and custodians of clickbait) dissecting your CV and critiquing what you’ve done and they never have or will. As I said, we’re not a bad bunch when you get to know us, maaate!

My take on the last couple of yrs with our club

First off I would be defined on CQN as a happy Clapper

And the celtic board love us

The thing with me is that I now know that the people running the club I love want something different to me

I want to go and see a Celtic team that is the best team we can put on the field and play good entertaining football to hopefully win any game we compete in

IMO the people running our club right now want an out from scottish football ,to which league , I do not know , an existing one or a new shinier set up ,only they could tell me .

I am not averse to moving my club out of the Scottish game ,although my reason is corruption rather than financial .

The trouble is that the people running my club seem to know or think that the only way they can do this ,is to have sevco 2012 as part of any deal .

If I think of the pros and cons of this mindset .I believe any existing league or new shinie one that will only take my club if that racist ,bigoted entity is coming too ,is not one worth joining .

My club should be looking to distance itself as far away from what has emerged from the grave of ragers 1872 and be making sure sevco 2012 are an irrelevance

They bring nothing positive to Scottish football, European cities and the game of football in general.

My club should have been fully focused on being a player on the European stage to facilitate a move from Scottish football , instead of trying to export religious bigotry masquerading as football rivalry.

As it looks to me at this moment ,the people running my club have gone all in on the bigotry card to meet their ambitions and for that to happen their has to be a bigoted club in existence, and with that in mind the last couple of years must read like a job well done in the celtic boardroom

I’ve been on CQN for a long time now. Had a lot of rows into early days about politics mostly. Not my bag now but I do enjoy reading a good debate regardless of the topic. The problem though is there is little debate any longer. It is all attack. And the attacks on the guy who started and runs the blog are hard to read sometimes.

You are just embarrassing yourselves. I could count on the fingers on one hand the number of posters here who have actually backed up any criticism with a meaningful and realistic alternative.

My preference? Nuno. His profile is weaker than Brendan’s was when be joined us. Desmond should cough up and back him, selling it by using BR as an example of how a spell up here can rejuvenate a stalled career path.

We are no longer a big club. We are a big name, but gone are the days when we can expect a long term commitment from any coach/manager. We are a stepping stone now, not the pinnacle. Its time we realised that.

  17. “You can take a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink”

Celtic did everything possible to secure 10iar. The squad, triple-treble winning & two thirds to a quadruple treble, was kept intact – offers for key players refused and even in these difficult Covid times, £20m made available to strengthen.

I’m not sure I’d agree with that. Like others, I expressed reservations when Neil was given the job permanently.

Our regression since around that time was gradual, though evident.

I certainly didn’t expect us to lose the league by 25 points and i agree the players carry much of the responsibility. The players who were being coached and driven by the management team Celtic had put in place.

Happy to read that line as “in my opinion, Celtic did everything possible to secure 10iar.”

  19. Locking back decisions on the goal keeper , injury to CJ , Boli throwing a wobbler , SD purchase didn’t work out meant we couldn’t keep weans oot a close.

It was a season too far for SB , you could just waltz past our midfield at will at times

Eddie dropping himself from Ferencvaros game 2 hours before kick off , put the tin lid on team morale

Lack of crowd was a problem for us not an excuse

We also thought Huns would maintain their crapness …

so in summary a series of incremental poor decisions, our best player taking the huff and then team morale hit the floor

the way out is either a short term managerial appointment or a more fundamental reorganisation of all things football DoF , technical director, coach etc recognising that a reorg is more difficult, Uk football culture is to work with your pals so bringing a team together for the long term will be tricky … any argy bargy in the boardroom will be about how best to move to a new structure quickly , slowly or not at all

…. I don’t believe a word in the media or blogs about what will happen until it’s actually happened, so quite entertaining reading bloggers who know things … winding everybody up and pissing on their own lawn , still the internet needs to be filled up

2 June. Our best players are off to the euros, off permanently or both. The winner of the league this season automatically qualifies for the ECL group stages and will have a massive competitive advantage for years to come.

15 days till pre-season and we have no DOF, no head coach, no captain, anything up to 18 players leaving and the soon to retire CEO running the show.

Our first (only?) choices for DOF and head coach have rejected us in the past few days and we have only now identified a (bag of a fag packet) alternative coach. Further good news is that he’s currently contractually obligated, could barely be further away, would have to serve 2 weeks quarantine when he arrives, which remains at a very uncertain future point. Meantime he’s starting his review of the current squad and (immediately) future recruitment now – if he can afford the time away from his actual job.

Even if you thought Lennon could turn it around, a competent club would have started the succession planning process 8 months ago after the first derby debacle. He’ll, a really competent club has a succession plan ready to dust down when a manager is all conquering (you never know when he’ll get poached by Leicester City!).

We are not a competent club. Our corporate culture is rotten with complacency, hubris and obsequiousness. That culture has been set by Lawwell and tolerated by Desmond. They are both culpable. They have both been found out in spectacular style. This will take years to repair and the relationship with a large part of the fans base looks irreparably broken.

To change the mood a little…

This piece is written by the Rome editor of tThe Tablet.

    I was particularly struck by this section;

“ A Catholic prime minister would mark a watershed in the history of British Catholicism. Tony Blair, who regularly attended mass as prime minister, decided not to convert until after he left office. He waited in part due to the constitutional complications associated with the prime minister’s role advising the crown on the appointments of Church of England bishops. According to the 1829 Roman Catholic Relief Act, it was unlawful for anyone “professing the Roman Catholic religion” to be involved in offering this advice, although constitutional changes by Gordon Brown significantly reduced the prime minister’s role in bishop appointments. Blair, a serious believer, was also wary of what it would look like if he became a Catholic while in office, pointing to the wariness in the British electorate of anyone too open about their religious faith. There was also concern about latent anti-Catholicism in the establishment.”.

Not looking to start a row but people were going on at the weekend that there is no law prohibiting Catholics from becoming UK PM.
