Postecoglou only part of the solution

371

Memories of the “second worst thing to hit Hiroshima” attempt to undermine Wim Jansen on his arrival as Celtic manager from Japanese football in 1997 remain vivid.  With no internet, we knew little of Wim.  His short stints as assistant with the Saudi national team and as manager of Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the four years since leaving Feyenoord did nothing to enhance his reputation.

Ange Postecoglou is an easier man for the support to make their own minds up about.  He has a record of developing talent, improving teams and winning titles.  By any reasonable measure, his CV is spotless.  None of his success happened in Europe and there is nowhere as acutely intense in the football roster as Glasgow, so there are hurdles to overcome.

I like that he is an established winner and that he has not relied on the chequebook to become so.  I also hear great things about his strength of character, he has old school authority, as well as a technocrats brain.

Eddie Howe went to the top of the candidate list around two months ago.  The time since has been lost, although Postecoglou was not in serious contention that far back.  We are now three weeks from preseason training.  If Ange is to be appointed, he faces a two week isolation period before being able to visit Celtic Park or Lennoxtown.  He might just make it.

Before any of that, he needs to exit Japan and his contractual arrangements with City Football Group’s Yokohama F Marinos, pack his family and belongings up and fly to the opposite end of the globe.  There is a lot of work for him to just sit at the Celtic manager’s desk.

At Howe’s request, we were prepared to recruit his entire football infrastructure.  He would have endorsed the appointment of coaches, scouts and director of football.  Celtic signed up for this but when you let them bring their encourage with them, the successful ones inevitably take the same faces (and more) back out the door with them when they go.

With Ange it will be different, although he may be familiar with some of the faces from City Football Group.  This infrastructure is equally as important as the managerial appointment.  Celtic need to rebuild a team ahead of a season that offers automatic Champions League qualification for the Scottish Premiership winners.  Much of that burden will fall on the manager’s supporting cast.  Lots to do, not a lot of time to do it in……

A quick word on Newco’s £6.75m public share offering, announced this morning.  Newco have returned an operating loss every year of their existence and have been unable to trade players to meet the shortfall.  The burden has thus far fallen on directors.  Turning to the fans may indicate a possibility the directors’ largess has dried up.  It could also imply no fresh investor has been found.

Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules mean any fresh equity investment cannot be spent on most operational costs, like football or support staff.  Competing against a team that runs a persistent eight figure annual deficit has its drawbacks, but we have seen this movie before.  We are back at the roulette table with all the chips on Champions League money.

‘People making excuses on here for the actions of poor valiant Peter are hilarious’

    ###

But not as funny though as those that think PL dictates strategy to TGD, or that pointing out the hierarchy of power within the organisation are making excuses for anyone.

PL is drawing the heat away from TGD. That’s part of his role.

  2. Ante Milicic, Milligan’s coach at Macarthur FC, is prepared to be even bolder about the prospects of a man he once said gave him his “PhD in football” as his Socceroos assistant.

“Celtic are fortunate that they’ve identified him,” Milicic said. “It’s good to see that someone has woken up. This should have happened years ago. This is delayed, simple as that.”

Some more words of praise from people who actually know Ange well. His Oz Captain

“Working with the guy and knowing what he can do and how he can mesmerise a playing group, it’s fascinating. He has such a strong and clear way of playing that you know how it’s going to end up.”

“For him to be given a chance in Europe, that’s what he’s waited for in the background as the right opportunity. I’m excited, because he’s the one Australian coach who can give Australian football its place on the world map”..

  3. ST STIVS,

I think you can disregard anything SidneyTim says about Ange.Like Lambert 14 with his hated targets.

So are you saying that our CEO is not carrying out his role properly due to being told what to do by a minority shareholder?

You reckon any kids coaches here in Scotland would never have heard of Alex McLeish, Gordon Strachan, Craig Levein, George Burley or Walter Smith?

  10. Arrogantly in recent years when we were “allegedly” fighting it out with Rangers for a players signature , i was always confident we’d get our man .

Now if players and agents do due diligence i’m not sure we would .

On the previous blog i said we’d get the manager our support deserves …….😎

  11. St Stivs/Philbhoy

there was an excellent 2 or 3 parter on RTE last year called ‘No country for women’ . The overall premise was that the claims in the Declaration on equality (pushed by Connelly and Markewitz etc) had been betrayed based on everything that had happened to women since independence(and during the war; lots of crimes against women by the rebels and subsequently by both sides in the civil war).

e.g. professions, property, mother and baby institutions, rape cases, access to contraception church/state etc etc. All the way up to recent scandals and commentary from Mary Robinson etc. My daughter was outraged by the less well known biases. History at school in Ireland is still very much focused on the crimes of Empire

she says if you say you are not a feminist then you are against equality. She’s bang on

‘Having quite the Beano to yourself recently on here.Sitting banging away fervently on your Tablet’

No, just typing as normal and contributing like yourself.

Do you have a problem with that?

,’getting rid of the years of pent up bile, amassed during the period we were winning everything’

    Nope, wrong again.

No build up of any bile, just many comments on a CEO who was a party to ignoring rule breaking by our former rivals by not getting Uefa to look into their playing ineligible players in hundreds of matches, and letting our newest rivals have rules rewritten especially for them, while lying and covering up RES12.

Then our latest fiasco, which sums up his tenure perfectly.

Hey, if you’re happy with all that then Lawwell’s your man.

‘Not that you were particularly happy then either, but the recent drop in our fortunes has really let you go apeshit.’

No, wrong yet again..hey, at least you’re consistent!

I was delighted in everything Rodgers done to make us a modern professional club.

    It was fantastic.

Sports science brought out a different dimension.

Gutted when your man deliberately briefed against him to the BBC on the day before our biggest match of the season, against Athens.

I knew then that it was going to have a detrimental effect, and the evidence is there to see with where we are now.

‘The unhappiness, loudmouth, excuse for a Celtic Fan I have ever come across.’

All I can say is, you really ought to get out more and meet a few fans then.

Hold on that’s at least 2 of you knowing stuff I don’t know … can you arrange a private email via Paul67 so I can find out what this stuff is …. hope it’s something to do with our directors deliberately running the club into the grubber , so we can buy better players and get the crowds back , or something like that ,,,

Firstly, the bile is coming from yourself.

You make loads of accusations, I have only stated facts about your man that are already out there.

Be honest, you don’t like the facts regarding Lawwell to be brought up, you seem to want to sweep all that under the carpet.

What a strange wee fellow you are.

Lambo …. if memory serves (which hey it may not) Saint Brendan starting gobbing off against the club and He should have been shown the door there and then after the AEK debacle … he started to work his ticket from that day that much is clear , nothing to do with PL or the board , it was all about Brendan … sports science did not start or finish with Brendan … it’s just an inimitable fact that teams not playing well are on average never in the right place to receive and hence give a pass which to the uninformed the players suddenly look unfit …

  18. Coaches name different for mariners game at the moment . 1 down at h/t . Is our alleged new man on the way.

  19. Another day and another load of sniping and name-calling on here.

To me this comes down to ONE question, and ONLY one question, and not a single person who has defended this decision has even ATTEMPTED to answer it.

if this guy is so great how come he’s spent 25 years without an offer from a top flight European club?

No-one can answer that. They can slag those of us who have our doubts all they want, but the vast industry of European football has taken a pass on this guy and they cannot argue against that except that Lawwell, the genius who hired Lennon twice, sees something no-one else does.

It’s a ridiculous idea and this appointment is scandalous.

  20. SAINT STIVS Turkey bhoy. Nice of you both to imagine things in Australia

Facts are football here is a pastime

Unlike Scotland , they are not that interested in it much

Asked about 20 people in my work over last 2 days what they think about postecoglou and blank expressions of who ?

Junior Football coaches here coach for the fun of it , they actually seem to know very little about the history of game , do it more of a fitness thing

To be honest can’t ever think of anybody talking about anything to do with football and work in health care in city

Just trying to give you honest info from Sydney on this guy and spin coming from a few usual sources that he is a national hero , he is not as very few here have heard of him

Just trying to give honest feedback from Australia No need to be abusive

Be interested to hear from Melbourne mick as it’s Melbourne postecoglou is from

So far it seems he is not even a household name even in his own household

    ———-

You make many interesting observations about events and their timing, starting with, as you say, the goalkeeper fiasco. Forster and Gordon offski and hey presto we end up with the third-choice as our number one.

You know what, nothing lasts forever. We were going to falter domestically some time, and the Ibrox franchise was going to catch up sometime. The then recent European results were indicative of which direction each club was going. So it should have been no surprise when our run came to an end – it was the manner that it did that ‘raises the hackles’. Twenty-five points and exiting every other competition at almost the earliest possible stage was never on the cards. Our players let us down badly at a time when good money had been shelled-out for a mere TV feed by tens of thousands.

Stories will eventually surface once a few have moved on, as will the definitive saga of Eddie Howe, the backroom boys, George Square & arson in Thortonhall.

    Just can’t see it.

Desmond has loads of business interests in his portfolio.

We are just one of many.

    He never attends AGMs.

His last comments about this seasons side being better than the Seville side of Larsson, Sutton, Thomson, Agathe, Petrov, Lambert, Mjallby etc show how out of touch he is.

His annual interview from the practise green of some golf course always includes mention of the EPL.

That should, after years of him saying the same thing, maybe tell you what his sole aim of investing in Celtic was about, especially when you see just how much billionaires now pay for EPL clubs.

I imagine his sole demand of the club would be to stay in the black, as it would be much easier to sell the club if we never achieve his pipedream.
