Pragmatic expectations and serial divorcees

1500

I spoke to a serial divorcee some years ago and he suggested that after one bad marriage, you’re more likely to plunge headfirst into another, then another, than your average person, despite all the warning signs.

He was driven by a need to put things right in his life.  Regretful of lost time, he wanted to get on with finding a secure, lasting, future relationship.

Parma were a tiny club for most of their existence, occupying the fourth tier of Italian football, but they rose inextricably to become one of the top clubs in Europe.  When Rangers knocked them out of the Champions League qualifiers in the 90s, they were sixth top seed in the Uefa rankings.  When the money dried up and insolvency grabbed them a few years ago it must have been hard to accept their place – a club with little substance going for it, but with fans expecting glory.

News this week that after liquidation a newco Parma would kick off at the bottom tier of the professional game in Italy is a morality tale.  Just as my pal, the divorcee, was compelled to plunge into a ‘lasting and successful’ relationship at the first opportunity, few people who pick up the pieces of insolvent football clubs seem to be blessed with pragmatic expectations.  A second, even more damaging liquidation, haunts in the shadows.

Me too. I was for Arthur all the way.

J titor. Have we won the Champion’s League next year?

Roy Croppie at 21.05 , that Glasgow Cup Final was in 1982. We won 2 1 , it was a cracking d game. About five of us went and ended up in the Celtic part of the enclosure. John Halpin got our winner.

Tommy McLean came over to take a corner. A Celtic fan shouted out eff off McLean, ya ugly wee humphy back bassa.

John Halpin wouldn’t leave the pitch after the game. After being persuaded to leave the pitch, he grabbed a tricolour off a fan and ran down the tunnel waving it at the raging stickies.

I think it was a few days before we beat St Mirren to win the league that season.

When I was a student at university, I sat in my brother’s radio show at the college, and was the first to play the JMC (Never Understand) on the air in Canada … it may not be true, but let someone else prove they played it before me.

    still love their stuff ….

Seems like it’s too late then :-)

I made my point on spin in another piece. It might not pass moderation as I name and shame certain individuals who operate in our Fourth Estate. You asked a specific question about what Ashley wants. I think it’s important to note that Ashley was reluctant to engage with Rangers. Sandy Easdale courted him. Somers was bitterly disappointed when he bought his shares in an opaque way via Banque Paribas. Somers wanted a statement of intent to ward off the threat of King. When Ashley used the threat of an EGM to remove Wallace, who was openly courting King, and Crichton, who had one eye on selling Laxey’s equity, Nash was the collateral damage.

At the request of Somers and Easdale, Ashley gave us Llambias & Leach.

King criticised the new board. He pointed out that they would only invest £20M over the next few seasons. He stated that austerity was not necessary. King then set about dismantling the club, driving our share price, which was launched at 70p, to 18p, prior to his acquisition.Taylor, Park & Letham also bought shares at this induced level. Ashley, whose wings were clipped by the SFA, was sidelined. Note the first time that you heard about the 3 Bears was in a Traynor PR piece that stated that these individuals had contacted the SFA and that they had been given a green light.

Ashley, in my opinion, only wanted control to further the interests of Sports Direct.

He would have been a generous benefactor. He stepped forward with £10M. The fact that Llambias and Leach, whom he trusted, were the custodians of the £10M, provided a level of comfort.

However, King orchestrated a concerted campaign to vilify Ashley and promote the credentials of the Real Rangers Men. So Ashley stepped back and awaited their cash on the table. The SD solicitors were fully aware of their exposure should the hostile takeover be successful. They therefore secured all the assets. Let’s be quite clear about this. Rangers play in a stadium that they own but cannot sell or use as a security on a loan. Rangers train at a facility that they own and could only sell to another footballing concern if they could find a buyer with an offer of £5.65M.

The crests and historic trademarks are listed in the Intellectual Property Register as owned by Sports Direct. Access to the club deck, via The Albion Road Car Park, could at any time be withdrawn. The block at Edmiston House is so dilapidated that there may be a compulsory purchase order by GCC should SD provide their permission.

To reverse this shocking state of affairs the current board were asked to repay a loan.

They had hoped that well-heeled investors would provide the £5M at NARSA. But they had no security to offer them. They hoped to pay off the loan with an equity release, but undermined any attempts by appointing a convicted criminal as chairman, Note how Sandy Easdale was never elevated to any position on the RIFC board. King not only elevated himself, he chose to be our chairman.

There will be no more loans from Ashley should the current board continue. It is just a matter of time until they are forced to step down as they will be trading whist insolvent. King realises this, hence his offer to sell out to Ashley.

If the season ticket income is well subscribed (currently only 12,000 have renewed) then we will run out of money prior to year end. If not, this takeover will collapse by August.

The SFA had better be prepared to relax their rules on dual ownership as Ashley is our only safety net, no matter how reluctant he may be.

  7. Sanna: Count me in. I’ll be in touch.

LiviBhoy: I agree, the stadium tour is very good. As supporters, we often think we know everything about the club but the stadium tour really brings to life the past, present and future of our great club. I’ve done a fair few stadium tours across Europe and we could learn a lot from from stadium tours at clubs like Ajax, Real Madrid and Barcelona amongst others. It’s nice to hear Kris does the voice over on the video at the of the tour, Neil Lennon was the narrator the last time I did it a couple of years ago

  8. The Parkhead old stand was built by Redpath Dorman Long

The main truss in front of the stand had two bracings coming

from underneath it .The gent that used to lower the bracings

was Patrick Kelly from Cambuslang was lowered during snow storms

the reason for lowering, the span of the truss could not hold the weight

of the snow so the two bracings helped tommie20h.h.

Remember when Celtic tried to sign Di Stefano in the early sixties.

I think John Cushley went with McGrory to act as interpreter.

Ambitious move at the time, but Bob Kelly probably wouldn’t have selected him.

  12. ClogherCelt: Ronny, GMS, Anthony Stokes, Stuart Armstrong, Lisa Hague and George McCluskey will be at the dinner. Some of them will be at the Celtic Store in Jervis shopping centre earlier
