Principled resignations, ASA withdraw adjudication

1739

I cannot fathom why someone would leak their intentions to quit as chairman of a football club.  Either Walter Smith is sufficiently alarmed by the conduct of his club to resign, or he should be busy working to resolve matters.  Leaking that he intends to resign will surely only add to the nonsense that surrounds the club.

Some will believe that Smith, who accepted the position as chairman of Rangers International when season tickets went on sale in May, can shuffle of the scene now 34,000 tickets have been sold.  Shareholder votes will determine the future of the club, in this instance, the identity of the chairman has little reach beyond parting fans with their cash.

Some investors may consider a more immediate problem is why the club are burning a hugely disproportionate amount of cash to secure promotion from the third tier of Scottish football, and why a management structure is not in place to deploy resources more effectively.

In light of Francisco Sandaza’s off-the-cuff comments to Tommy in Glasgow, and his subsequent dismissal by Rangers International, we urge Mr McCoist to be more cautious than he was after his team’s spirited, but ultimately fruitless, performance in Forfar on Saturday.  It would be unfortunate if McCoist transgressed a condition of employment and suffered accordingly.

Advertising Standards Authority ruling withdrawn

It doesn’t rain but it pours.  The Independent Review Process of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has looked into the ASA’s recent, and widely reported, ruling on Rangers International’s claim on football titles won by a liquidated club. The Review found that “it was a procedural flaw for the ASA to have relied on an extract only of a report sent to it by the advertiser”.

Further, the review process ruled that “there was also the risk of a substantial flaw of adjudication in the distinction that had been made between ‘club’ and ‘company’, especially in the light of previous ASA decisions about companies that change hands and the circumstances in which the new company could or could not trade off the reputation of the old company”.

The Chairman of the ASA, Lord Smith of Finsbury, as decided to reopen the ASA’s investigation into the case and to withdraw the published adjudication, which favoured the advertiser.  Withdrawing this adjudication does not infer that a different outcome will subsequently be reached.  To use a football analogy, it’s half time and they’re all square.

An interesting, and potentially critical part of the story, is that after the initial ASA decision was issued, the club’s web site noted that their submission to the process included information that a “panel of the London Stock Exchange” supported their claim.

The Stock Exchange subsequently appeared surprised at this assertion, so much so that the club promptly withdrew the claim from the web article.

“You’re history, that’s what you are, na na na na”.

probably we can symapthise with the boards position to some degree or another regarding some of these issues

me personally i can agree that the board should be so active against the GB while they are so inactive regarding the shenannigans that have passed and the almost daily revelations from the good lady charlotte

disappointed that a sectuion of our support seem to think CP would be a better place with them. folk who remember life after MON and henrik, before the GB were around will recall that CP was a library. I cant understand why the board or a section of our support would want a return to that.

Especially when it looks like the 100 quid drop in ST prices has failed to increase the number of ST sales

You touched on a major point there, that is bizarrely overlooked.

Why the inaction against the SFA, ne ,worse, blatant, spoken support for them, while a group of supporters are literally being persecuted by the law.

The club can’t change the law all they can do is abide by it until someone challenges the snp in court.

I think every celtic fan would agree that they are gunning for us at every opportunity, hense the reason the GB need to realise who is really applying the pressure on them.

We’re told that we live in a different time with different priorities. Whilst there is a big society there is no such thing as community. Unions bad, big business good, unless they’re avoiding tax, but even then it’s legal & they do provide jobs- typically on zero hours, minimum wage contracts- so we should be grateful.

So know your place, don’t rock the boat and be prepared to cough up and belt tighten again following the next crisis. It’s probably all the fault of the Border Agency & all those immigrants anyway.

thebhoywithmcgraininhisside – totally agree. It’s a minefield. So all I see are Celtic Supporters being attacked, and needing defended, which to be fair, have been ( I missed the meeting in April as was at a wedding). Since then, it’s gotten worse, despite there being no football. The job is being finished quickly in the new season. Timing is everything. :(( It’ll be forgotten by many come May next year.

Thanks God for posters like yourself and PJBhoy, and others, who see it, and quietly comment. I mean that sincerely – I’m proof that ranting doesn’t help. Ole Mags is proof that subtlety doesn’t work. But at least there’s summit there for posterity.

  14. Cops,Fire Brigade, safety officers , put the squeeze on Celtic what are they supposed to do? The GB wanted publicity ERGO they got it, that’s what happens when you don’t abide by the law, and that’s what happens to you when you know the law is after you and you stick two fingers up to them, not to clever was it? As most have said when they are on (the green brigade) they are good, but for some strange reason it all stops and someone don’t ask me who steeps in and makes a jaw dropping complete arse of it, that is when I stop and think, why? But do not be surprised if the green brigade are happy about this, they have there publicity so they will be happy, oh I know you will get people saying to me that’s a stupid statement , maybe? But it’s my opinion, and they’re agenda, shame really.

I think the Green Brigade annoyed one or more of the powers-that-be at Celtic Park. From then they were always going to be up against it.

The press needed a pantomime villain and settled on the Green Brigade. It seems to me that the Club didn’t do an awful lot to disavow them of that opinion. In the Board’s defence I can see how some of the position’s taken by the Green Brigade made them difficult to defend. Especially given msm’s stance vis-a-vis Celtic and the artificial hue & cry over offensive behaviour.

However, the Club allowed the press to demonise the Green Brigade and then to “Green Brigade-ize” huge sections of the support, we were the reason why new, tougher football laws were needed.

But even with these, Focus (fucup?) couldn’t shut the Green Brigade down so the Board did, but only after opening a new singing section and creating a new supporters’ liaison officer. They can now, and in fact do, say that tried all they could to resolve the problems and are only closing section 111 as a last resort. Pretty slick.

You talk a lot of sense; just disagree with “In the Board’s defence I can see how some of the position’s taken by the Green Brigade made them difficult to defend”. If anyone on the Celtic board felt that this was an issue, he should have left without complaint. If he didn’t feel it was an issue, then fair enough, just get on with the job. There was never any justification for turning this into what it is now, if that was indeed the cause of all this.

So we can only speculate why the members of the Celtic Board have allowed this to get to the situation we’re in now. Am also curious as to why Paul67 predicted this some time ago. Especially seeing as the GB have been the only entity to defy those predictions, by changing the song repertiore to appease the most vocally offended, and by clarifying their position at all times in this situation.

A step back, and quick objective assessment of this whole scenario should be enough for anyone to see that something is badly wrong, and it’s not just coming from Salmond and his praetorian guard.

The biggest organised threat to the Celtic Board are the GB. Why are they keen to ensure they are “dispersed”? Answer: they have something to hide.

I hear a lot of people criticise the Green Brigade for putting themselves first. I don’t see it myself.

Also as supporters we have to abide by rules. Not doing so can see us ejected or even banned. However, despite all the rules, not to mention the seats, that the Green Brigade have reportedly broken, nobody is being banned for it. Why?

The Club has banned people before for less. Could it possibly be because they cannot prove who did what, where and when?
