Principled resignations, ASA withdraw adjudication

1739

I cannot fathom why someone would leak their intentions to quit as chairman of a football club.  Either Walter Smith is sufficiently alarmed by the conduct of his club to resign, or he should be busy working to resolve matters.  Leaking that he intends to resign will surely only add to the nonsense that surrounds the club.

Some will believe that Smith, who accepted the position as chairman of Rangers International when season tickets went on sale in May, can shuffle of the scene now 34,000 tickets have been sold.  Shareholder votes will determine the future of the club, in this instance, the identity of the chairman has little reach beyond parting fans with their cash.

Some investors may consider a more immediate problem is why the club are burning a hugely disproportionate amount of cash to secure promotion from the third tier of Scottish football, and why a management structure is not in place to deploy resources more effectively.

In light of Francisco Sandaza’s off-the-cuff comments to Tommy in Glasgow, and his subsequent dismissal by Rangers International, we urge Mr McCoist to be more cautious than he was after his team’s spirited, but ultimately fruitless, performance in Forfar on Saturday.  It would be unfortunate if McCoist transgressed a condition of employment and suffered accordingly.

Advertising Standards Authority ruling withdrawn

It doesn’t rain but it pours.  The Independent Review Process of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has looked into the ASA’s recent, and widely reported, ruling on Rangers International’s claim on football titles won by a liquidated club. The Review found that “it was a procedural flaw for the ASA to have relied on an extract only of a report sent to it by the advertiser”.

Further, the review process ruled that “there was also the risk of a substantial flaw of adjudication in the distinction that had been made between ‘club’ and ‘company’, especially in the light of previous ASA decisions about companies that change hands and the circumstances in which the new company could or could not trade off the reputation of the old company”.

The Chairman of the ASA, Lord Smith of Finsbury, as decided to reopen the ASA’s investigation into the case and to withdraw the published adjudication, which favoured the advertiser.  Withdrawing this adjudication does not infer that a different outcome will subsequently be reached.  To use a football analogy, it’s half time and they’re all square.

An interesting, and potentially critical part of the story, is that after the initial ASA decision was issued, the club’s web site noted that their submission to the process included information that a “panel of the London Stock Exchange” supported their claim.

The Stock Exchange subsequently appeared surprised at this assertion, so much so that the club promptly withdrew the claim from the web article.

“You’re history, that’s what you are, na na na na”.

    Neustadt-Braw / James79,

Am not clear on your stance here.

Apparently by asking you this question, I’m breaking the blog rules, and being abusive etc.

If you were the Board, what would you do with the GB who are causing all this division?

    —————

To be honest I think the club have been backed into a corner by some very bitter people in power (SNP)

It’s well documented their distain for us and all things celtic/Irish

They have been looking for the least little thing to jump on the GB and, unfortunately for us, the GB walked right into it

They have to pick battles they can win against that lot, I don’t think going up against the board is the right way to go. But only my opinion mate.

I disagree, as we should have a board that will defend our support in the stadium and out of it; that will defend the team in the stadium and out of it; and will defend the management in the stadium and out of it.

They’ve failed in all of the above.

That should be a massive warning sign to every Celtic Supporter throughout the planet imo.

Who exactly are the Green Brigade? Some say they are a group of non-Celtic supporters who year-in year-out buy season tickets, not to support the Club but to promote their own agenda. These selfish bassas sing & dance at matches, create banners & tifos the envy of the world over and charge the Club not a single penny. And not content with that, they sit back while the Club makes loads-a-money from their efforts. How much did the Barca tifo make the club? And not one copyright in sight, fecking amateurs. And then the football manager celebrates them and commends them for their efforts. But then again what does he know eh?

Some point to banners that were ill-judged, offended many and went too far. They view these not as mistakes, but as calculated acts carried out to further some ill-conceived and ill-defined cause. In my opinion, the Green Brigade should & indeed must learn from these errors. However, they are a young organisation, wisdom supposedly comes with age, but I am yet to find it:o)

Others claim however that the Green Brigade are a group of about 80 Celtic supporters who dance and sing at matches, create banners and tifos the envy of the world over…

80 fans? Even the Spartans needed 300. They must be supermen to do it.

    And on that bombshell…

CELTIC last night lost patience with the Green Brigade — and shut down the section of Parkhead they use for safety reasons.

The club had issued repeated warnings to the controversial fans’ group over their behaviour at games.

But the Green Brigade continued to cause serious breaches — with 190 seats broken during the last four home games — and now chief executive Peter Lawwell has acted to protect the stadium safety certificate.

A Hoops statement said: “This is not a decision that has been taken lightly.

“Supporters in this section provide the team with excellent vocal backing and we have also seen some highly imaginative displays which have brought colour and energy to Celtic Park.

“The club has on a number of occasions acknowledged the positive contribution the group make on a match day.

“We must, however, balance this against the need to ensure that we provide a safe environment for all supporters. We are sure all our supporters understand that it would be inconceivable and irresponsible for the club not to deal with this issue with the utmost seriousness.

“We are sure supporters will also agree that we have given those fans within this section every opportunity to change behaviour. However, the Club has now been left with no choice. Safety is paramount.”

Fans with season tickets in the affected area — Section 111 — will be offered a refund or given a chance to relocate.

The Green Brigade last night issued a statement saying that they were ‘dismayed’ at the club’s decision and claimed to be taking legal advice.

While the Green Brigade have earned praise for improving the atmosphere at games they have also courted controversy.

The legendary Nine-In-a-Row manager resigned from the position after another weekend of bitter boardroom backstabbing following the return of disgraced former chief executive Charles Green.

Rangers made the announcement on their Twitter account this afternoon saying: “Rangers announces that Walter Smith has today resigned from his position as Chairman and a director of the Company with immediate effect.”

Record Sport revealed Smith was outvoted by his fellow directors over Green’s appointment as an Ibrox ‘consultant’ and this new development – coupled with the Yorkshireman’s latest public attack on boss Ally McCoist – has pushed the 65-year-old to the edge.

Smith battled in vain to keep the club’s broken board together since replacing the ousted Malcolm Murray on May 30. But he had never been comfortable in the position and had been left isolated by the decision to bring Green back.

That move came on Friday 24 hours after billionaire Jim McColl launched a bid to overthrow Green’s cohorts from the board and replace them with Paul Murray and businessman Frank Blin.

Charles Green could now push to be reappointed to the board and may even try to land the chairman’s role.

That would further undermine the position of McCoist who hit out at Green after his side lost to Forfar on Saturday.

SCOTT BROWN last night vowed to sort out Elfsborg’s mouthy hardmen in tomorrow’s Champions League crunch.

The Swedes dished out rough treatment to Celtic star Georgios Samaras in the first leg.

Elfsborg ace James Keene warned the Greek ‘there will be a few tackles waiting in Sweden’, but skipper Broony is ready to turn bodyguard.

Brown said: “If Elfsborg are going to single Sami out for any special treatment, that should be fun. A few of our lads will help him out, that’s for sure.

“We are a tight group of players. We spend time together after training, we don’t just leave as soon as possible.

“As soon as we go on the pitch, we all stick up for each other. Is it one for all, all for one? Yes.”

Brown, launching the Hoops new away kit with Samaras, admits news gaffer Neil Lennon is close to signing a new deal has given Celts a massive Euro boost.

Brown added: “The gaffer signing a new deal would be huge for everybody at Celtic and the fans.

“Our relationship has changed since we played against each other.

“When I was at Hibs and he was at Celtic, it was a hate/hate relationship between us! The gaffer is great to work under. He wants us to get the ball down and play.

“I’m not saying we are Barcelona, but he wants to get as close to that philosophy as possible.”

Celtic head to Sweden today with a one-goal lead, and Brown is confident they can complete the job after an impressive run of away results in Europe last year. Broony said: “We are more confident going into away games now.

“The gaffer has instilled belief into us.

“He believes we can win away from home and that carries over to the players. We go into these games knowing we have a good chance.

“It would be good if we can score early in Sweden, it would settle everyone’s nerves.”

Celtic would drop into the Europa League if they crash out tomorrow, but Brown isn’t thinking about that. Brown added: “The Europa League would not be a consolation for us, not in the slightest.

“The main thing for us is to get to the Champions League. We want it more than anyone.” Meanwhile, on loan Hoops hitman Mo Bangura will find out today if he will make the game after pulling up with a hamstring injury in training.

Bangura’s inclusion in the Elfsborg team for the first leg caused massive controversy after Lennon called on him to be left out.

Bangura, 24, was booed by the Hoops support and he was guaranteed to get more stick tomorrow night.

But he limped out of training with the hamstring problem and looks likely to miss the Euro showdown.

Members of the Celtic Board may belong to one faction or the other or may hold a completely different view. I don’t know, I’ve never met any.

I do think however that the Board have handled the Green Brigade situation in a completely cack-handed manner. They watched on while politicians, the police and the scottish media demonised the Green Brigade as an extreme group. They sat on their hands whilst the media labelled any Celtic fhan brought to their attention as Green Brigade and therefore an extremist and so dangerous and worthy of rough treatment. They told us that no info was being passed to the police, whilst doing the exact opposite in an alledged attempt to “give the Green Brigade enough rope to hang themselves.”

  18. twists n turns on

    Smith statement.

It is with the greatest of regret that I have to announce to Rangers supporters that I have decided to step down as Chairman of Rangers Football Club. It is, I am convinced the correct thing to do under the circumstances.

Unfortunately, recent events have led me to the conclusion that the only option left open is for me to submit my resignation and to leave the Board of Directors with immediate effect.

Working with a Board which could rarely find consensus and agreement has created a highly-dysfunctional environment which has not been good for the Club. On top of that, there has been recent further disruption which again has rendered the Board less effective and efficient than it ought to have been.

It is clear that Boardroom change is required and I would urge Rangers fans to get fully behind the resolutions which last week were presented to the Board and shareholders.

Also, I would like to remind the Directors that when a General Meeting was requisitioned earlier in the year I, as Chairman, was urged by everyone on the Board to do everything in my power to avoid such a meeting. At that time, I worked very hard to achieve that and now I am urging the Directors to do exactly the same this time and if that means Boardroom changes then so be it.

In fact I am now imploring everyone to back these proposed changes so that much-needed stability and a level of integrity can be restored to the Ibrox Boardroom.

However, so far as the chief executive and manager are concerned, let me say this: Craig Mather, as I have said before is doing a good job. It is unfortunate that this has happened but when change does come I hope he’ll be allowed to continue the job he has started.

As for Alistair McCoist, it is important that we all appreciate that no other Rangers manager has had to work with poorer or more trying circumstances. It is my fervent hope that when the dust settles and Rangers have a clearer path and future he is given the chance to manage under conditions similar to those which were afforded his predecessors.

Last but most certainly not least, I must turn to Rangers supporters. They have suffered agonies and tortures over the last two years but they can be proud of their contribution. They did not waver in their support of their Club and as far as I am concerned they have been absolutely the one outstanding feature of this Club.

Indeed, they are a reminder to those in the Boardroom that Directors have the massive and ultimate responsibility of serving, protecting and nourishing this Club for the benefit of the fans and not an individual or any associates. Rangers fans are a credit to their Club and they really do deserve so much better.

As a manager I had to make many difficult decisions but none was tougher than the one I have just made. Stepping away from this Club is heart breaking but I will always be grateful for the support Rangers fans have given me down through the years.

I will never forget and more than anything else I wish them the Club they truly deserve.
