Qualifiers, cash, mitigating fitness

265

Lots to consider after last night’s Champions League qualifiers.  Top surprise of the night was Marseille being eliminated by Panathinaikos on penalties.  The Greek side equalised in the 10th minute of added time at the Velodrome in what must have been a horrible way to lose for the home fans.

Should Panathinaikos reach the group stage at the expense of Braga, Celtic will earn an extra £900k in 10-year coefficient bonus.  Unfortunately, Copenhagen (higher 10-year coefficient than Celtic) twice came from behind in extra time away to Sparta Prague to win through on penalties, with Larsson Jnr scoring a first minute opener for them.  The Danes face Polish champions Rakow Czestochhowa in the playoffs.  Rakow started the new season in mixed form, so I expect the Larssons to be celebrating.

AIK Athens continued a good night for Greek football winning away at Dinamo Zagreb.  The second leg is scheduled for Saturday and a Dinamo elimination would also net Celtic around £900k.  Dinamo were keen to retain Croatia international keeper Dominik Livakovic for the qualifiers, so that position could change early next week.  Could be an interesting one.

This money all adds up for Celtic and shows the perils of Champions League qualification, where teams are caught early in their season’s preparation.  100 minutes into the game, it was no surprise that Marseille legs and minds were not up to the task.

Newco’s draw in Geneva earned them €5m plus takings from an additional home qualifier against PSV Eindhoven next week – huge money for a side that badly needs cash.  Their season ahead of our visit to Ibrox on 3 September will be markedly different to ours until that point.

We will have played four competitive games, none against a team that has/will physically exert us.  Newco will have played eight games, four of which are ideal preparation for facing Celtic.  They are in Eindhoven four days before that Celtic game, with the possibility of elation or depression, as well as exertion.

There are clear negatives for Newco but after eight games they will be close to fully fit, whereas we are likely to still be finding our legs.  That problem is hopefully something the backroom team can work on to mitigate.  Not sure if this is a good or bad fixture mix.

Followed their footsteps 50 years after and still felt their presence, a fabulous city with a stadium untouched by time befitting of Celtic’s finest day.

I don’t agree with everything Joe Brolly says here but it is interesting that he is saying it.

Joe does love the limelight and the sound of his own voice and is clearly angling for some ambassadorial public position (future Irish president no less). As far as the song goes, it’s not a hill I would die on (bit of a dirge) but those on the noisy unionist fringes will bag that as a victory and then come for the names of the hunger strikers on GAA grounds, etc etc. What say ye Joe?

Scrub the Celtic Symphony at the same time as outlawing loyalist paramilitary bands and banners parading with Orangemen each year. Seems like a fair deal for us all to move on in harmony.

Elsewhere, a reminder that in the future ballot for a united ireland, everyone gets one vote. Box clever for the middle ground and feck the loyalist hardliners.

Call Joe what you like but sheltered life doesn’t fit the bill.

  7. Reading back my bit about Joe, it could be read that his Mother is an All Ireland winner with Derry but no it’s the bold Joe. LOL

  9. Joe Brolly is as far removed as a person who has lived a sheltered life than anyone I could ever imagine .

Generally I find his views refreshing ,thought inducing ,and often controversial.

I find his opinions are for the most part , forward thinking .

  10. Another thing Joe did a few years back, he just met a homeless guy in the street in Belfast, think it was around Christmas but not sure of that, but the weather was freezing at the time, and Joe just invited the guy to come and live in his up market House.

He was on the Late Late talking about it, a few years back,

  13. Since it’s been brought up, was listening to the Joe Duffy radio prog yesterday, Brian Warfield of the Wolfetone’s was on, Duffy was being a total winker wanting Brian to say what Oh A Up The Ra meant, it was hilarious, a few snowflakes were calling him disgusting, in fairness they allowed a few on that were on his side, he managed to get in the fact that nobody bothers to mention thems singing about being up to their knees etc, found the apologetic west brit stuff puke inducing, but that’s just me.

  14. Just seen a screenshot…..has Gustaf Lagerbielke landed…if so…welcome to Celtic….am hoping for a ball playing Mjalby type…not too much to ask is it ;-))

  16. Big Wavy and others

Joe Brolly has earned the right to speak out and I think he answered the point about foregoing Hunger Strike commemorative grounds directly in the article.

The worry is that any concession only leads to more demands but without concessions, no steps forward are taken. The Rebel Songs are well worth preserving and nothing of which to be ashamed but I do favour a better mix of Rebs and Celtic songs than we often get. That is a preference and not a demand. As a non-singer, or more accurately, as someone who is usually invited not to sing, I have little influence on the matter.

  17. Hot Smoked,

    etc etc…

This is nothing new. It’s post-conflict, grief porn designed, once again, to belittle the good folk of West Belfast…..

    Brolly should know better.

Let’s include loyalist paramilitary displays in Orange walks as a similar gesture of goodwill.
