Qualifiers, cash, mitigating fitness

265

Lots to consider after last night’s Champions League qualifiers.  Top surprise of the night was Marseille being eliminated by Panathinaikos on penalties.  The Greek side equalised in the 10th minute of added time at the Velodrome in what must have been a horrible way to lose for the home fans.

Should Panathinaikos reach the group stage at the expense of Braga, Celtic will earn an extra £900k in 10-year coefficient bonus.  Unfortunately, Copenhagen (higher 10-year coefficient than Celtic) twice came from behind in extra time away to Sparta Prague to win through on penalties, with Larsson Jnr scoring a first minute opener for them.  The Danes face Polish champions Rakow Czestochhowa in the playoffs.  Rakow started the new season in mixed form, so I expect the Larssons to be celebrating.

AIK Athens continued a good night for Greek football winning away at Dinamo Zagreb.  The second leg is scheduled for Saturday and a Dinamo elimination would also net Celtic around £900k.  Dinamo were keen to retain Croatia international keeper Dominik Livakovic for the qualifiers, so that position could change early next week.  Could be an interesting one.

This money all adds up for Celtic and shows the perils of Champions League qualification, where teams are caught early in their season’s preparation.  100 minutes into the game, it was no surprise that Marseille legs and minds were not up to the task.

Newco’s draw in Geneva earned them €5m plus takings from an additional home qualifier against PSV Eindhoven next week – huge money for a side that badly needs cash.  Their season ahead of our visit to Ibrox on 3 September will be markedly different to ours until that point.

We will have played four competitive games, none against a team that has/will physically exert us.  Newco will have played eight games, four of which are ideal preparation for facing Celtic.  They are in Eindhoven four days before that Celtic game, with the possibility of elation or depression, as well as exertion.

There are clear negatives for Newco but after eight games they will be close to fully fit, whereas we are likely to still be finding our legs.  That problem is hopefully something the backroom team can work on to mitigate.  Not sure if this is a good or bad fixture mix.

    ………….

I have NOT met anyone who likes The GODFATHER 3 Film.

I have always hated it as the script was CRAP and some of the so called acting was ” Cliched” and very ponderous.

Robert de Niro in The GODFATHER 2, is my favourite role of anyone in The Godfather movies. Superb stuff.

However, in The GODFATHER, I am always impressed in the scene where LUCA BRASSIE is murdered. If you look carefully and forget about LUCAS face as he is being strangled from behind….The HITMANs FACE/EXPRESSION of real Murderous INTENT and Violence is superb……the Actor who played THAT part looks as though he was ” Doing it for Real” and actually enjoying himself ?

    LOL

    Great stuff !

So even when the Scottish Media report positive Celtic news — contract extension talks with Abada and Hatate — it’s made up just to allow them to later claim “Celtic stars snub contract extensions”.

One thing you can say about CQN — It’s good for a giggle.

    Completely agree.

Did you know that a few of the actors in the films were actual Maria members? Including the big oaf, thinknhis name is Luca Grazzi or something. He was an enforcer for them actual mafia. If what I’ve read was correct that is.

Don’t worry, it wasn’t the Scottish sports media. 😂👍

It was hardly difficult for Godfather 3 to be rotten when it’s compared with 1 and 2 which were arguably two of the best films ever made.

  7. Daniel Podence is 5’5”, fortunately he doesn’t play left back or we would be straight to DefCon4 on here.

Spot-on. Can’t believe how bad they are and how much they get away with.

For starters, any time there’s Scottish games on, they don’t have the line-ups on the site until about 20 mins before kick off in some cases. Even though this stuff is known over an hour before the game kicks off.

Sometimes they have it about 50 mins before the game, but this is rare.

The English football is bang on with all this stuff. Even the sh&tty gossip page, the English one is up the night before about 11pm. Sometimes the Scottish one isn’t up until after 10am. Wtf?

Why isn’t it up at the same time each day? What else are they doing? Certainly not researching for stories. As it’s clear they just lift them from the fan sites or Hun Media feed them it.

That’s not even getting into how bad their match coverage and reporting is.

Shocking standards, if any at all.

  9. Bada bing….this narrows down Tierney’s reported options

From whats been talked about in London sports media, that leaves just Villa as an option, or just to hunker down and stick it out on £110K a week, the poor soul…

As for a move back to us, no thanks, too injury prone and too expensive. Merlin a younger, fitter, cheaper alternative…

  10. HUNS v PSV next week at Ipox,1st Leg.

BET365 have the Huns as 6/4 Favourites, while PSV are odds of 7/4.

I could not resist PSV at 7/4 so my Bet is ON.

I will have a couple of Correct Score Bets later in the week.

  13. 1241 got me thinking……. God forbid, if something bad should ever happen to Paul, whom would assume responsibility for the blog?

  14. Drambowiecelt. . If it is the photo outside the Lisbon Airport I am in it. But if it is a photo of the departure from Greenock. No, because I actually went to Portugal on the Saturday before the game and stayed for a week afterwards, Sadly, I missed the Lions returning to Celtic Park.

I went to the airport on the day with a hired taxi because the late John Dougan, whose was the Greenock Celtic Club’s Secretary wanted to go to Fatima. But the flight was late and when the driver was asked how long the journey to the shrine would take, it turn out we would have missed a good part of the game.

John said to me “I love the BVM but I am not missing the game for anything.” So we went into Lisbon, had a meal and the taxi took us out to the Stadio. After the game, I went out with my friend to see the lhads off home.

  15. Brendan said,

You do need it. If you have the facility to do that up here, or the finances, I think you should. You can work all year and do great work but then the weather sets in. That’s the big advantage the Europeans have over us.

You lose your coaching. You might go through three or four months, losing time, because it’s not about coaching, it’s about keeping the players warm.

Utterly bonkers Celtic. If not, why not ?

There will be thousands of ST holders who don’t attend the upcoming ‘sold out’ home fixtures as is their choice.

There will be thousands who want to attend but can’t.

There will be tens of thousands left on the table as a result.
