Radical change needed to UK football

756

It’s kicking off in all directions today but keep an eye on the English Football Association proposals to introduce a series of changes to lower league football.  One option on the table is for Premier and Championship sides’ “B teams” to compete in a new structure with League Two and Conference teams.

The FA are eyeing an opportunity to allow the best young English talent, often cosseted in the youth squads of top Premier League teams with little chance of first team action, to be exposed to competitive games.  The proposal includes a geographical split of northern and southern teams.

While the FA Premier League is bust by any known measure, the Football League is in an even worse financial state.  Average income in the lower leagues is remarkably high but the steep pyramid-model, which has clubs chasing huge increases in revenue in the Premier League, leads to excessive over-spend.

With these proposed changes on the table the Scottish FA could do worse than discuss their own game’s future with their English counterparts.  Well run Scottish clubs are hamstrung by their better-funded neighbours cherry-picking their best players for a relative pittance.  Scottish Premiership clubs regularly cannot compete financially for players in England’s fourth tier.

It’s surely time to federate the top Scottish league with the English league structure.

Information slipping out of Switzerland this morning that Manchester City and Paris St Germain are each facing a fine of circa £50m for breaching Financial Fair Play rules is encouraging – if Uefa are able to deliver on the deal.

When you consider financially punishing an entity which owns the oil wealth of a sovereign nation the figure needs to be a big one.  £50m just about hits the mark.

Apparently the Great Sevco Shakedown began this morning when the club’s first every goal scorer, Andy Little, was released.  The news is harsh on the player but the club needs to learn the lesson – income needs to match expenditure.

Imran Ahmed’s court hearing today against Rangers International comes exactly three years after liquidation expert, Craig Whyte, was triumphantly welcomed into Ibrox, an ominous anniversary, for some.

    or Van someone else?

Not being cheeky but how exactly are the Huns going to be “back in the same league as Celtic next season”?

SofTunis- thankyou, it’s more of an easin’ down than the full retirement.

I’ll still be makin’ the odd Amido Baldesque cameo appearance, rather than givin’ it the full on Scott Brown 90 minutes plus extra time.

This month’s WSC has a feature on Lisbon in 1967; a bit on the game which most of us are familiar with [ Celtic won 2-1, btw] but a lot of good background on the Stadium itself.

Ole young Carol always makes my day. Come Independence, I hope and pray she returns home. It wasn’t her good self that made the remark I mentioned earlier.

Over 200 Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped on the 15th April last, yep it has made the news Ok and now 22 days later the US have finally offered the Nigerian Government some expert help in trying to trace their whereabouts, If it had been European girls kidnapped in some war torn area, would the World reaction have been similar. That my friends is racism & hypocrisy on a global scale , that is the real enemy that we should all be railing about not a guy with a few pints in him acting the prat.

  9. Morning CQN, greetings from a dreary Troon.

Got a letter to say that since all of the works at the Celtic Way (magnificent it is too) have been completed my paving stone has been re-laid.

What does that mean, moved or just grouted?

Was right next to Jinky’s statue as well!

Might E-Mail them to find out!

Hopefully that cryptic tweet mean that big Virgil has signed a new deal, that would be a great present to the fans for Sunday!

  11. I’m off to Golf just one comment re Kev’s piece. I agree with him that there will always be a team that the Orange hordes will give their allegiance too. Whatever they are called and whenever they end up in the same League as Celtic, I do not know. My reaction, So What.

  12. Hot news from the Eurovision Song Contest:

The Ukraine entry has been withdrawn in light of recent events.

My wife and I are just back from our travels which included two weeks in Sicily. I wanted to thank you again for the tips/information you gave before we went, particularly about the driving. This was invaluable and (almost) prepared me for the experience, which I likened to a mixture of dodgems and wacky races. When I handed the hire car back the guy seemed genuinely surprised that there were no bumps or scratches on it.

We enjoyed many of the sights although didn’t get to see everything we planned.

Now looking forward to getting back to Celtic Park on Sunday after missing the last two home games.

    Thanks again.

If you wish to retain any credibility at all, and not be considered a ‘bit of a clown’, pray tell us how much money NEIL has ‘earned’ for Celtic in the transfer market, and in his European exploits……the way you ‘go on’, you’ll be wanting us to sign sally, or miller, or boyd next……off oot (yur heed) ……. If president for life wee Alex Mugabe gets his way in September will Scotland have to put in its own Eurovision entry?

  16. Wasn’t paying attention to the Scottish scores last night, Hibs in real danger of being in the play off place.

If I had to choose it would be Kilmarnock, will be interesting on Sunday to see who ends up in that final play off place.

Another former Celt, Victor Wanyama, wants out of Southampton just 12 months after joining them in a £12.5million deal.

The midfielder has failed to settle on the south coast and is ready to join the exodus from St Mary’s West Ham have shown an interest, but they will struggle to afford his price tag and wages of around £30,000 per week.

Given you only use negatives to prove your case without balancing positives, like say the £10m that NL’s signing of Wanjama brought in, what value does your assessment have?

Had a word there with the guys at ‘Better Together’. They are categorical that Scotland will not obtain entry into Eurovision. What’s more, they insist that if we vote Yes, we’ll be subject to Jemini on continuous loop on Radio Scotland.

I believe them. We should be concerned.

  22. If, as reported in the rags today, a striker is NL’s priority signing this summer, what is to happen to the mass of strikers we have?

We know Sammi is leaving, I would guess that LG & Stokes will remain and with Commons played more as a striker than midfielder this season, a new striker would bring us up to 4 players for the position.

Of Balde, Pukki, Watt and Fridjonsson, who stays and who goes?

Fridjonsson will stay IMO so are we looking to punt Balde, Pukki & Watt?

Or perhaps the timing of the arrest and questioning of an Irish politician regarding his ‘alleged’ role in the dreadful murder of a mother 42 years ago yet a group of known individuals who murdered unarmed civilians during a civil rights demonstration in the same country 42 years ago have yet to be charged with murder and in all likelihood never will be?

  27. The Battered Bunnet on

Shout what you like about Eurovision voters getting it wrong but in 2003 it was hard to argue with the logic when Jemini – a second-rate H & Claire and therefore a third-rate Dollar – came home with zero points.

This was the UK’s worst result in the contest’s history. The duo blamed the result on not being able to hear their vocals through the on-stage monitors but this was a somewhat optimistic way of explaining away the disastrous result, and you have to question whether the monitors did somehow become sentient during the performance, travelled back in time and wrote the steaming Euroturd Cry Baby.

Being realistic, the blame can be placed less on the monitors and more on the shoulders of songwriter Martin Isherwood.

I read your article and I’m thinking it should be a benchmark against which to measure progress.

Some of the issues you mention are now being addressed now that the capacity for doing so is being built.

The 2nd Supporters Forum is a key part of that capacity building. They are scheduled to take place every three months or so to enable progress against previous issues to be tracked and new ones raised.

It will take a full years cycle to see how it is working. Can you let me have the original article via Paul with permission to pass on?
