Radical change needed to UK football

756

It’s kicking off in all directions today but keep an eye on the English Football Association proposals to introduce a series of changes to lower league football.  One option on the table is for Premier and Championship sides’ “B teams” to compete in a new structure with League Two and Conference teams.

The FA are eyeing an opportunity to allow the best young English talent, often cosseted in the youth squads of top Premier League teams with little chance of first team action, to be exposed to competitive games.  The proposal includes a geographical split of northern and southern teams.

While the FA Premier League is bust by any known measure, the Football League is in an even worse financial state.  Average income in the lower leagues is remarkably high but the steep pyramid-model, which has clubs chasing huge increases in revenue in the Premier League, leads to excessive over-spend.

With these proposed changes on the table the Scottish FA could do worse than discuss their own game’s future with their English counterparts.  Well run Scottish clubs are hamstrung by their better-funded neighbours cherry-picking their best players for a relative pittance.  Scottish Premiership clubs regularly cannot compete financially for players in England’s fourth tier.

It’s surely time to federate the top Scottish league with the English league structure.

Information slipping out of Switzerland this morning that Manchester City and Paris St Germain are each facing a fine of circa £50m for breaching Financial Fair Play rules is encouraging – if Uefa are able to deliver on the deal.

When you consider financially punishing an entity which owns the oil wealth of a sovereign nation the figure needs to be a big one.  £50m just about hits the mark.

Apparently the Great Sevco Shakedown began this morning when the club’s first every goal scorer, Andy Little, was released.  The news is harsh on the player but the club needs to learn the lesson – income needs to match expenditure.

Imran Ahmed’s court hearing today against Rangers International comes exactly three years after liquidation expert, Craig Whyte, was triumphantly welcomed into Ibrox, an ominous anniversary, for some.

I have no knowledge of this area of law.

I read from thosevwho do that theodds were heavily stacked against chancer in his battle with the spivs.

Am still astounded of forehead that a judge can reach this decision, although, in the context, perhaps I’m not…

No worries bada, only a tenner anyway.

Scottish football is brilliant at the minute.

Plenty of money to be won next season.

    I know what you mean.

Good for the league if DU can hold onto them for at least another season.

Hope Celtic can arrange a first refusal on them.

Of the two I think Armstrong has that something extra that the best players just seem to have.

On the basis of the play and its quality the current score is a travesty!

On the basis of taking your chances its 1-3 end of debate!

    Awe Naw

I have a dish washer — it is just that I enjoy talking about this crap more than I enjoy going and switching the bloody thing on!

Besides I have had to go and get things looked out for my boy going to Valencia tomorrow.

As for all the thousands who may be duped into paying for season tickets — that is still to potentially happen, and was not the very narrow issue that was up for debate today.

Lance Armstrong was not at all concerned about them and only concerned himself with one issue — were The Rangers Football Club Ltd or RIFC Ltd or whichever incarnation was being sued shown to be de facto impecunious as at today?

That was and is the only issue upon which he can make his decision on today’s motion.

Apparently Ahmed failed to show that the company was De Facto skint.

It might be in a fragile financial state, it might have less money than it would otherwise want going forward, and it might have to play a team of weans to stay within its available funds ( much to the concern of the watching bears ) but as at today it is not skint.

If I remember correctly Paul said as much in a recent leader.

However, I will give you this. The report above that Lord Armpit seems to have relied on a bland statement that investors would be ready to step in to prevent it going bust does not seem good law to me.

As I said earlier, had I been acting for Ahmed at that point I would have asked if my learned friend was proffering a guarantee– either to my client personally or to the court in terms of solvency.

I wouldn’t have expected an affirmative to either answers and so that puts me in the position of pointing that out to the judge and asking him to note all that has been said falls short of any kind of binding commitment. Part of the reason for doing that would be to generally point out that I can still be a pain in the arse in terms all of this and that there is merit in crossing my palm with silver to prevent me from casting all this up again should the notion take me.

IA’s people didn’t seem to press too hard — which makes me somewhat suspicious to be honest.

I don’t agree that George Armstrong was deliberately protecting the bears out of bias — just can’t see that to be honest so will disagree with you and Neganon there.

Off course — IA can appeal if he is of a mind to.

And indeed he can bring his motion of new should there be any perceived change in circumstances.

Lastly I hope the staggies beat the Hibbees.

Duff and Phelps sold the lot at a knock down price to a group connected to the existing owner for an amount not dissimilar to their fee.

During their ‘Administration’ of rangers, costs were not reduced and creditors were not protected. In fact, at seemed as if the top priority was to make sure the club made it to the end of the season.

Given the largest creditor was HMRC and they have concise published rules on CVA’s nobody could ever really believe a CVA was a viable option especially an experienced and respected company charging multi million pound fees.

With no CVA and nobody to buy the company the Liquidator should have been called in to finish the job.

    It stinks.

On a separate note from all that Judge Judy stuff here is a far more concerning story for those of you who are of a sceptical or paranoid nature.

I am acquainted with the sibling of someone who is fairly high profile in Scottish Football.

The person concerned holds a position with a so called “diddy” club and is frequently referred to in the press and indeed is often interviewed.

Now, a couple of weeks ago, this person woke up to find that a newspaper article had been written by a red top columnist — the columnist concerned being someone who used to be involved in the game at a participation level. The Columnist concerned has since retired and pursues another job entirely now which he supplements with his newspaper column.

In the column, the writer goes on to talk about the party concerned, expresses a certain dislike for the individual, cites similar expressions of opinion by others and gets altogether somewhat personal.

This surprised the subject of the column as he could not remember ever having spoken to the writer.

So, our subject used his connections and called up the column writer, introduced himself and politely enquired what this was all about, said he could not remember meeting the writer and said he wanted to get to the bottom of any incident where he had inadvertently caused the writer any offence at all.

This was met with a somewhat stuttering and hesitant reply from the so called newspaper man, who went on to reveal that he did not in fact write any of that column at all and that he merely received money in return for putting his name to the articles that the paper churns out!

He agreed that he had never met the party concerned other than perhaps very briefly, and had never had any opportunity to chat at any length whereby he could have formed an opinion favourable or otherwise.

He had not authorised the article and as a matter of practice whatever was sent out into the world in his name was not always checked with him.

In other words, this so called piece of journalism which is published in the name of someone who would be known to all Scottish Football Fans had absolutely no factual basis whatsoever, was not written by the person who is named as the writer, and clearly was written with some form of agenda in mind.

I am amazed to find that the so called writer has since had other articles published in his name by the same paper.

The honourable and sensible thing to do after being spoken to by the person who contacted him as above would have been to tell the newspaper to stick their column up their you know what.

Integrity and corruption in football reporting — you had better believe it!

  22. BRTH of course you are entitled to your opinion. But I ask myself. The last time the Hun was in this position all sorts of court orders were being granted. This time feels worse but no court order. Odd odder and odderer.
