It’s kicking off in all directions today but keep an eye on the English Football Association proposals to introduce a series of changes to lower league football. One option on the table is for Premier and Championship sides’ “B teams” to compete in a new structure with League Two and Conference teams.
The FA are eyeing an opportunity to allow the best young English talent, often cosseted in the youth squads of top Premier League teams with little chance of first team action, to be exposed to competitive games. The proposal includes a geographical split of northern and southern teams.
While the FA Premier League is bust by any known measure, the Football League is in an even worse financial state. Average income in the lower leagues is remarkably high but the steep pyramid-model, which has clubs chasing huge increases in revenue in the Premier League, leads to excessive over-spend.
With these proposed changes on the table the Scottish FA could do worse than discuss their own game’s future with their English counterparts. Well run Scottish clubs are hamstrung by their better-funded neighbours cherry-picking their best players for a relative pittance. Scottish Premiership clubs regularly cannot compete financially for players in England’s fourth tier.
It’s surely time to federate the top Scottish league with the English league structure.
Information slipping out of Switzerland this morning that Manchester City and Paris St Germain are each facing a fine of circa £50m for breaching Financial Fair Play rules is encouraging – if Uefa are able to deliver on the deal.
When you consider financially punishing an entity which owns the oil wealth of a sovereign nation the figure needs to be a big one. £50m just about hits the mark.
Apparently the Great Sevco Shakedown began this morning when the club’s first every goal scorer, Andy Little, was released. The news is harsh on the player but the club needs to learn the lesson – income needs to match expenditure.
Imran Ahmed’s court hearing today against Rangers International comes exactly three years after liquidation expert, Craig Whyte, was triumphantly welcomed into Ibrox, an ominous anniversary, for some.

Fraser, Herron, Twardzic and Henderson from today’s 20 team have played first team games and shone.
DD – Don’t fancy eating duck eggs mate, some people swear by them though.
The ordinary chicken eggs from a small farm I highly recommend.
It was surprised how different they are to the supermarket tripe, to be honest.

It’s interesting all the talk on Dundee United’s youngsters. Depending on who you listen to on here we should be signing Robertson, Souttar, Armstrong, Mackay-Steven, Gauld or Cifti. Some say that if they were really that good DU would be a lot closer to us in the league. I’m not quite sure I agree with that. I remember when Hibs had Brown, Thompson, Whittaker and Fletcher they were good (but they still didn’t really challenge us). In fairness all 4 of those went on to have good/reasonable careers although injuries pretty much ruined Thompsons.
Without having seen much of Robertson he seems to be a bit of a no-brainer signing for the summer. We need back up for Izzy, he’s had a great season, has been capped by Scotland and would probably be available for around 750K (or less). Armstrong has had a great season too and looks to be a very good player but with Johansen and Henderson we probably don’t need him. Mjallby was talking up Souttar over the weekend. Would he be a good back up for Ambrose/ Van Diyk? I’m not sure…..maybe after another season if he continues to develop but probably not now. Gauld looked like a superstar earlier in the season but has faded since (like Raheem Sterling did last season at Liverpool….look at him now!!). I hope Gauld has been extensively scouted because number 10s are incredibly hard to find and to have one on your doorstep and not sign him would be a major mistake. Mackay-Steven and Cifti are also good players but I’m not sure they would add enough to our squad.
In a bygone era Celtic carried a reserve side, where young players could learn their trade alongside seasoned professionals who were reaching the end of their careers or playing to gain match fitness after an injury.
We had a much smaller playing staff then, and reserves would get a shot when a first team player was unable to play.
I believe Jock Stein went through a season using less than 15 players.
We could never get away with that these days are the demands on the players are much heavier, and they are less inclined to risk a long term injury.
I know that the Lions would play when carrying an injury.
The reason was simple. No play, no pay.
We are carrying a really big first team squad to provide cover. That makes it much more difficult for a young kid to break through. With no reserve league a youngster has nowhere to play after he reaches 21. If he hasn’t managed to stake a first team place or a place in the first team squad he is freed, or sent out on loan to hone his skills with regular games.
We haven’t solved this problem and will not do so in the near future unless SFA allows us to field a B side in a lower league.
Or we get accepted to play in another reserve league in the north of England.
I can’t see either happening and each year we will lose some of the guys we have brought through the ranks.

You know it seems that the huns old and new are still getting a hand up from every possible Scottish judgement
From the fitba authorities letting them back in the league and still calling them rangers
To the administrators who were allowed to sell the lot at a paltry 7 million or so, and BDO who seem to have done SFA
From the FTT who said they were largely not guilty
To Lord Nimmo Smith who couldn’t understand why not paying tax gave them a financial advantage
From the court who found Lennys attackers not guilty
To the court who reckons they can last until 2015, despite their own board saying differently every day
Did I mention the compliant MSM? Probably not necessary anymore as their circulations plummet with every passing year and their relevance becomes less and less almost weekly.
Its just as well that the sevconians are so hell bent on self destruction, because the Scottish authorities are doing all they can to keep their beloved institution breathing.
Talking of youngsters breaking through, in the past 14 years how many have we had
Aiden,
Shaun,
McManus?
we let McGinn and McGowan go, maybe prematurely
we also had to bring Chico afte a spell at Aberdeen too
I tend to think that its harder for scottish kids to make the breakthrough at CP nowadays, but with no huns around, perhaps it should be easier now?
INL:
It makes it all the more stunning to reflect on just how successful Celtic have been through the years despite the mass of forces against them at every level.
To all you Sevconians on life support looking in, I’m (not really) sorry for the 4 letter word which I know you all loathe so much.
Good morning friends and welcome to Matchday 57 from a wet, grey and blustery East Kilbride. 3 more points and a couple of goals takes us to 98 for both of these for the season and in with a good chance of hitting the double-ton on Sunday.

Weatherism.
Morning all. Wild, wet and windy once more down here. Had to laugh at the woman on BBC after the weather forecast. According to her, Saturday looks bad. According to the forecast, every day, including Saturday, for the foreseeable future down here is going to be dire. They should rename the national programmes the EBC.
According to the rags I gather, our manager is interested in resigning Gary Hooper. I, for one, will be delighted if we can resign him.
Hungufferism.
Good news for ole Parkheadcumsalford
Wee Carol lookin’ like she hails fae Greenock.
Given that Neil blew £7mill of Celtic fans money on strikers who either,
couldny do the job or, they were the victims of mismanagement by Neil,
should be grounds for questioning the wisdom of giving Neil, more of the
fans money for strikers although, Neil was certainly without shame when he
asked for more cash for strikers ?!?!?
Personally….I would tell Neil to go and join BJM and accept that his managerial
stint at CP is over. No cup finals for Celtic fans as well as being, skelped up and
down the CL is not good enough.
Re: The huns….
I canny believe the amount of dreamers on here and, elswhere who are deluded enough
to think that, the huns have died. They’ll be back in the same league as Celtic, next season(by hook or, by crook) as, the victims. Deal with it!!!
The huns will NEVER be killed cos – nobody has the guts to do it.
The huns have kidded the bahookies off of Timdom by their – diving under the radar for
three years to avoid paying the £140 million that they owe.
The huns attitude will be – “…aye we dodged paying – whit ur ye gonnae dae aboot it Timmy?”
They ARE the peepil, they have ALWAYS been the peepil and, they ALWAYS will be the peepil – in this country.
I think that the huns have got a point with the line in the ‘famine song’ – “The famines over, why don’t you go home?”
Well, why don’t we strike a deal and – go home ?
How many Tims are honestly, ever going to be happy in this sectarian / racist backwater of a country?
Off oot wi my tin-hemet on in my, nuclear-bomb proof tank. Bye.
