Rangers 3-2 Celtic

1137

Celtic will have to keep the Champagne on ice for a while longer after failing to collect the three points required to win the league at Ibrox this afternoon.  The champions-elect looked nervous early on with few looking comfortable in possession, allowing Rangers significant periods of possession.  After only 10 minutes Rangers were ahead when Sone Aluko beat Thomas Rogne before cutting inside Charlie Mulgrew and firing a shot past Forster in the Celtic goal.

Celtic scarcely featured as an attacking threat in the first half but moments after going behind Georgios Samaras produced one of the most scintillating pieces of skill on the day.  The Greek international collected the ball 70 yards from goal, beat four opponents before his shot from 12 yards was saved by Alan McGregor.  Anthony Stokes mishit the rebound allowing McGregor to tip over.

Stokes forced a further save from McGregor with a fine volley after controlling on his chest but the game was soon to look ominous for Celtic.  Cha Du-Ri was caught wrong side of Lee Wallace and made the slighted touch on the Rangers player who went to ground two yards outside the penalty area.  Referee Calum Murray sent Cha off despite the covering attendance of Charlie Mulgrew.

Despite their numerical advantage Rangers seemed content to prevent Celtic scoring, Fraster Forster didn’t make a single save while Celtic were numerically on level terms or only a single man down.  Ten minutes after the break Victor Wanyama was red carded for a two footed tackle on Steven Whittaker.

Lee McCulloch was fortunate to remain on the field after elbowing Scott Brown on the head.  In a carbon copy of the incident which ended Beram Kayal’s season in December, McCulloch went to ground after the incident until attended by a physio, which perhaps tempered the referee’s response.  Clever, if predictable.

With things clearly not going their way Celtic then lost an offside goal.  Celtic had an opportunity to make an attempt on goal when they won a free kick 28 yards out.  With Charlie Mulgrew still running into position Scott Brown played a quick pass to Kris Commons but Celtic players were crowded out by a number of opponents and lost possession.  Rangers broke forward and applied pressure which brought the best out of Fraser Forster but Andrew Little put Rangers two ahead from what was clearly an offside position.

A further breakaway on the 77th minute resulted in Lee Wallace putting Rangers three goals ahead.

Despite being two goals down substitute Kris Commons started to dictate play and brought Celtic their best period of possession.  In the 89th minute Georgios Samaras broke through the Rangers defence but was scythed to the ground by Bocanegra.  The referee awarded a penalty and ordered the Rangers player off.  Scott Brown scored the penalty

Moments later Commons got the better of Whittaker on Celtic’s left before being brought down by the Rangers player.  Commons found Thomas Rogne with the resultant free kick which the defender powered home.

    @ Fortune

myself and a few others have said about that nonsense at the end with McCoist, it was cringeworthy

if i can bring myself to watch it again, i swear he positions himself looks at the camera and then re-positions himself and then Tanner starts reading from a pre-pepared script – it was bokeworthy mate

    ……..

Completely agree. His BBC camera awareness kicked in big time. He even had a sly wee look at the camera without turning his head towards it. The camera was on him from the left of the tunnel, and seconds later the camera was viewing him from the right of the tunnel. He could have quite easily shook Celtic players hands from deeper inside the tunnel, but this stunt was purely for the cameras. Some of our players (Commons, Izzaguire) were taken in by his stunt, but Scott Brown knew the landscape and firmly held his own hand down when McMoist offered his own.

  2. Aye gutted we did not win today or get a point to give home party next week. But on a positive from today Izzy and Commons back on left and looking like the combination that ripped teams apart last year.

Roll on title party and in tip my hat to all who went today and represented us so well.

    In Neil Lennon I trust.

Aye, the meeja have a job on their hands over this one.

I think that’s why Sky went full throttle on it today.

One wee modicum of comfort we can take from it is that they didn’t feel Jabba was up to the job this week. Which is why he was probably watching today’s charade from the comfort of Minty’s one bedroom mansion with a homemade cheeseburger.

Watch the game again and look closely. If you still believe Rogne was excellent today then fair enough, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

My standards are more akin to Jock Stein than yours.

I’m definitely not deserving of your comment but am genuinely touched by it. One of the nicest things that has ever been said about me, thank you.

  7. 20-odd Tic fans in the pub in Luxembourg today – from many nations. One of ‘them’ too, yelling and screaming like his team had won the champions league. Good atmosphere despite the result. playing in the The SPL makes it increasingly difficult to ‘sell’ the Club to people from other countries. The board have to remain conscious of this, and align our strategy accordingly.

They tick a few boxes with signing the polish guys etc, but european football has to be a “must” as it is only on that stage that we can really grow the fanbase, and exist totally independently with no need for the huns.

  8. and then they ask why would you want to leave Scotland…

they made sure we know why we stand proud and will never lie down to the scum who try to run our wee bigot country…

    We shall overcome….

  9. If it’s true that Scott Brown did not fall for Sneaky Ally’s cheap publicity stunt, then he’s gone up even further in my estimation.

    hamiltontim,

It’s always the same on here when we don’t perform.

Too many can’t accept that the fault is probably ours. Team not up for it; lacking a bit of quality; no managerial direction, etc. It HAS to be something else. Usually the ref.

However, those of us with eyes in our head and not wearing blinkers see it differently. We see what we see. We see the facts and, if we express the truth of it, we become huns. It is so pathetic. Fact is, our accusers are no better than huns themselves. Possibly worse as, they should know better.

    Alas ………

  11. Ah well at leas there is one happy Celt on the planet,

  13. I have no problem with red cards for two footed challenges like Vic’s.

Where I do have issues is that a Rangers player would not have been sent off for that.

With us, it’s always the letter of the law.

With them, it’s just the referee using his commonsense and not spoiling the game by sending off a Rangers player.

HT – not sure at all about him. He was the same last year against Jellyfish – dont think he has progressed.

One thing that really got me annoyed today was Craig Brown on Sky Sports News saying he was very happy that wee sally was not the first RFC manager to suffer 4 defeats in a row!!!

    ——

Surely the irony in that would have brought a smile to your face !! :))

  16. C Murray must have been crapping himself when our second goal went in and he couldn’t wait to blow the whistle when the ball was heading into Ranjurs box at the end. The way he constantly ignored the challenges on Samaras earlier in the game was just criminal. Big Sammy was totally bemused by it all.

That game only went ahead today because we were never going to win it. I just love Scotland.

    Liquidate and annihilate.

Just back from Ibrox and I’ve never felt less bothered after a defeat to Rangers. I’ve read this CQN page only and heard a few calls to Chico on Radio Clyde from the Celtic miserabilists who only come out to play after a defeat.

Here’s the headline story & the main events.

Rangers had a Phyrric victory and we had a Party in defeat.

Cha blocked a great scoring chance for them.

Aluko scored a great goal when Cha was scared to tackle for fear of a red card.

Cha’s fears are justified when he gets a red for denying a “clear” goalscoring opportunity to Lee Wallace (1 goal this season) a yard outside the extreme left of the penalty box.

Celtic fight back and a wonder save by McGregor from Sammi prevents the equaliser. Stokes and Ledley miss further chances.

Rangers huff and puff at 1:0 against 10 until Big Vic gets sent off (haven’t seen it so won’t comment). The game ended there- 11(or 14) against 9 was always going to be a heavy defeat.

Rangers score 2 more and we are chasing the game.

Sammi is brilliant once more and we get a pen. The Celtic end has to remind Calum to red card the Gers centre back as he was guessing as to who had made it since he did not want to red card them.

Thomas Rogne wiped a smile off their face from a great free kick delivery.

    So forget bottling, big game mentality, wrong team etc; etc;

Remember what our fans at the game did. Immediately after each of Rangers goals we sang and danced and shut them up. The fans at the game got the attitude right. Those phoning to criticise Celtic are getting it wrong.

There are people in our support who believe Antony Stokes is a serial diver because he has been booked 4 times for simulation and that our manager has a discipline problem because he gets sent to the stands, and there are others in our support who’ll stand beside me in believing that we are still paying a price for Dougie gate.

    I’ll gladly pay that price

Hail Hail Neil Lennon and the Celtic championship winning team

    …………………………………….

    SFTB

I hope you don’t mind me reposting the above which is at the bottom of Page 1 of this thread.

Tommy joad. There is no good time to point out short comings in our club but never the less we have some.We must be prepared to sort them out if we want to do well in Europe I see no point in hanging our heads about todays cheating huns we need to be more forward thinking than that.H.H.

  21. But do ye know what….despite my disappointment and hurt, I think back to Kilmarnock away and a half time 3 goal deficit and remember how a support dragged a team from it’s knees.

The huns couldn’t have done that!

  22. looks like I have come into an arguement.

“My standards are more akin to Jock Stein than yours.”

That’s a hell of a claim to make. What teams did you lead to be champions of Europe?

Mind you Big Jock also signed Frank Munro and Ian McWilliams for the Centre Half position.

Thomas Rogne is Maldini in comparisopn to those two :-)

    “Zbyszek at 18:29

The only way Mulgrew was going to cover Cha was because Cha was fouling Wallace, and slowing his progress. Wallace unimpeded was going through on goal, he would only have needed about 4 more strides before shooting on his good side.”

If you were reading my opinions on your referees you probably noticed that I came here usually with excuses for their decisions. My opinion is that they are not as bad as some Celtic supporters suggest but on the other hand they are not enough good the be the judges of my Legia Warsaw team games. I would not like them to be named for my games. This is not to tell you that my opinions are all true but I really try to be not biased.

Back to the Cha Wallace accident.

The more times I watch the more I think this was grotesque. Cha trying to fight better position for the ball and loses it. When Wallace feels Cha’s hand on his shoulder, he goes down like a dead trunk. His one leg is in the penalty area, the other leg is his half of the pitch. Would that pull cause that fall down? No, definitely no, but it was foul. Foul for yellow card. Even if Wallace run, Mulgrew was another man to defend the goal. Wallace in any circumstances had to beat Fraser Forster first.

Spot on. We should not forget they are hurting and took this almost like a defeat.

On a different note////; were is the flag money, scarf money etc going?

  33. Personally i thought McCulloch tried to pull Chaz out to isolate him & thereby nullify Rognes effectiveness in the air. Thought Chaz was poor at first goal today. Rogne was just skinned. Not much you can dae about that. Still the best pairing we huv.

    Still gonni win the league.
