Rangers 3-2 Celtic

1137

Celtic will have to keep the Champagne on ice for a while longer after failing to collect the three points required to win the league at Ibrox this afternoon.  The champions-elect looked nervous early on with few looking comfortable in possession, allowing Rangers significant periods of possession.  After only 10 minutes Rangers were ahead when Sone Aluko beat Thomas Rogne before cutting inside Charlie Mulgrew and firing a shot past Forster in the Celtic goal.

Celtic scarcely featured as an attacking threat in the first half but moments after going behind Georgios Samaras produced one of the most scintillating pieces of skill on the day.  The Greek international collected the ball 70 yards from goal, beat four opponents before his shot from 12 yards was saved by Alan McGregor.  Anthony Stokes mishit the rebound allowing McGregor to tip over.

Stokes forced a further save from McGregor with a fine volley after controlling on his chest but the game was soon to look ominous for Celtic.  Cha Du-Ri was caught wrong side of Lee Wallace and made the slighted touch on the Rangers player who went to ground two yards outside the penalty area.  Referee Calum Murray sent Cha off despite the covering attendance of Charlie Mulgrew.

Despite their numerical advantage Rangers seemed content to prevent Celtic scoring, Fraster Forster didn’t make a single save while Celtic were numerically on level terms or only a single man down.  Ten minutes after the break Victor Wanyama was red carded for a two footed tackle on Steven Whittaker.

Lee McCulloch was fortunate to remain on the field after elbowing Scott Brown on the head.  In a carbon copy of the incident which ended Beram Kayal’s season in December, McCulloch went to ground after the incident until attended by a physio, which perhaps tempered the referee’s response.  Clever, if predictable.

With things clearly not going their way Celtic then lost an offside goal.  Celtic had an opportunity to make an attempt on goal when they won a free kick 28 yards out.  With Charlie Mulgrew still running into position Scott Brown played a quick pass to Kris Commons but Celtic players were crowded out by a number of opponents and lost possession.  Rangers broke forward and applied pressure which brought the best out of Fraser Forster but Andrew Little put Rangers two ahead from what was clearly an offside position.

A further breakaway on the 77th minute resulted in Lee Wallace putting Rangers three goals ahead.

Despite being two goals down substitute Kris Commons started to dictate play and brought Celtic their best period of possession.  In the 89th minute Georgios Samaras broke through the Rangers defence but was scythed to the ground by Bocanegra.  The referee awarded a penalty and ordered the Rangers player off.  Scott Brown scored the penalty

Moments later Commons got the better of Whittaker on Celtic’s left before being brought down by the Rangers player.  Commons found Thomas Rogne with the resultant free kick which the defender powered home.

I sincerely hope you’re wrong I think both Rogne and Commons could go on to great things with this Celtic team. Thomas is our best centre half by a long way he would be a big loss if we were to lose him.

  2. sorry guys – just in from the pub – without reading back, am I the only one to think that Whittaker’s challenge on Victor was shocking!!!

What I had gathered from today due to the guys who have been able to get a certain allocation of tickets for Ibrox for over the past decade, struggling to get any – is that the corporates looked after their friends and friends of friends.

There was a dearth of tickets from the usual avenues I know.

Thats what I took from it.

As HT said – you can tell and spot a day tripped a mile off. Different breed.

(Il always go back to Celtic leading Barcelona 1-0 at Celtic park in the uefa, Thommo, the scorer sends a pass astray – and a scarf landed on the trackside..)

Wonder where that fan is now.

  4. hamiltontim, 19:10

    Indeed.

A meaningless game – the chance to win the league at Ibrox?

In possibly the last game we play there?

To get it right up the tax-dodging bigots waving their plastic union flags and singing we are the people?

The chance to have the last laugh as their history ends?

When their third went in I could see it being 5, it was that bad.

Another big game blown by ridiculous team selections (if Cha wasn’t good enough to play against them before then why start now?) and Ki and his 15 yards sideways passing …

and playing players out of position.

We need to get our act together over the summer. Big time

My post was not directed at you, I responded to you, and I never made it personal, if I had wanted to make it personal I would have.

I read your post, and you have every right to say what you did, it was considered, and it was not slaging for slagings sake, like many others on here tonight. they were whom I was refering to.

Yep, utterly blatant. Mentioned it myself here at the very time.

    Odious stuff.

The question it raises is, are the rest of SPL supporters as stupid as the huns.

I don’t think they are, and there seems to be some discomfort amongst the various board members and their relationships with their supporters clubs over the issue of hun mortality and it’s fake resurrection.

  7. HT – still not conviced about Rogne – gets pulled about too much when up against a physical prescence.

I’m hoping that TET wasn’t referring to me when talking about ‘green huns’.

Quonno …… They had to win that game today…….. It was written in the corridors of power. !!!!!!!! …… We have won the league, they have won liquidation….

  11. ET – Thanks. It’s been a brutal weekend to be honest. Today’s result didn’t help.

What did help was the messages of support from Celtic supporters. I’m blessed.

Don’t fall out with Hamiltontim as I don’t think you were having a go at him and he’s picked you up wrong. As he said he was just back in from the game and venting his spleen. It’s allowed. I think that what you were alluding to was the more insidious posters who seem to revel in doing the team/manager down when things don’t go clickety-click. F*ck them I say. Not supporters and NOT welcome.

You probably wont be able to force yourself to, but if you are able to watch the game again you might realise what a bombscare Rogne was today.

    He was shocking.

Sat back when he should have committed umpteen times – didnt want to go within an elbows swing of mcculoch all game and was bullied against the huns, again.

Lack of pace for a lad his age is concerning.

Im also not sure you can put the level of aggression he needs to command in games like today, into him.

Central defence let us down big time today, closely followed by full backs, who were followed by the midfield (possibly absolve Brownie again)

Samaras was our best player by a country mile. Very good performance from him.

(You will know my opinions on our centre halves and on Samaras (im nearly saying my previous opinion on Samaras))

I was thinking about that last week …… The other teams in the SPL have also been cheated over the past 20 years, and I don’t think their fans would be too happy either if the buns are allowed back into the SPL

  15. there is a poster on here, who knows Calum Murray. I forget who it is, but he posted about him a year or so ago. He saifd murray is a jambo, and doesn’t have a bad bone in his body.

i felt today that murray was utterly kow-towing to the establishment, and the illiterate scottish tabloid media. it is easy to make ‘big decisions’ in rangers favour, as they are never questioned… in print, on the airwaves, or formally by the sfa.

I watched the game with a kiwi mate – knows nothing about football. i explained to him about mcculloch’s nickname, and his technique of jumping with his elbows. 2 mins later…. he did it to scott brown. all referees know he does this. all fans of all teams know he does this. all radio ‘reporters’ know he does this. all football journalists…. you get my drift. Nothing is ever done about him. Why?

Another thing we need to look at is the number of players we do sign who never prove to be good enough to be first team regulars. Hooiveld,Rasmussen,Bangura, the Polish striker on loan,Loovens,Cha, I am sure you could name many I have forgotten that is a terrible waste of resources we would have been better paying top dollar for say just two players who would have been first team regulars.Imo this needs to be addressed by the club if we are to compete in Europe. H.H.

I was just about to post about that, Whittaker went in over the ball and planted his studs straight into Vic’s shin. Vic made it easy for the ref by going in with both feet, but his studs were down and he was always getting to ball first.

My good friends wife works with a first cousin of Calum Murrays, who lives and is from the north of Ireland.

The said (female) cousin goes by bus, to almost every Rangers home game

Having said that, that has nothing to do with the man himself

  23. Cheated. Scunnered.

Abysmal ‘refereeing’. Corrupt SFA. Hun-centric media. Ultra violent orcs. Orange Ordure pretty much running Scotland.

Vomit inducing disgrace at having to wade through all that sewage.

Well done to N.L. & The Bhoys for actually putting up with all that and still doing their best in a totally bent environment.

If you’d bothered to read my earlier posts :-) you would have seen that I thought today Rogne was defensively very poor. However, I do think he has been extremely consistent this season and has improved tremendously.

p.s was talking to your Sean in Bar67 when we got back. The Gallowgate was a bit of a battlefield!

  25. HT – not sure at all about him. He was the same last year against Jellyfish – dont think he has progressed.

One thing that really got me annoyed today was Craig Brown on Sky Sports News saying he was very happy that wee sally was not the first RFC manager to suffer 4 defeats in a row!!!

  26. Eyes Wide Open,

That is a truly bizarre post.

Rogne was excellent today, yes, Aluko put the ball through his legs 30 yards form goal but he was a rock otherwise.

He also scored a magnificent goal.

He also played in a team with ten men since the 28th minute, obviously he will be exposed from time to time. He is 21.

He played in a team with 9 men for 20 minutes.

Your assasination of a great young Celt is deplorable.

Disgraceful treatment to our manager today. That stunt wouldn’t have been pulled on MON or Big Jock – my money is on the fourth official making the decision (after a few words with his handlers)

I agree 100% , but I think you know how it works. Rogne knows that NL did not give him a squad number, his contract is up in 14 months, he holds all the aces. He has impressed this season and stayed relatively injury free, he will go for £2m this summer, Commons wil go back to England for around £1.5m. Okay , good drink is speaking here…but anyone want to bet me a 6 pack of Becks they willl be here on September 2012? Incidentally I really hope they are and will gladly pay up , first one on will be accepted as the bet.
