Rangers 3-2 Celtic

1137

Celtic will have to keep the Champagne on ice for a while longer after failing to collect the three points required to win the league at Ibrox this afternoon.  The champions-elect looked nervous early on with few looking comfortable in possession, allowing Rangers significant periods of possession.  After only 10 minutes Rangers were ahead when Sone Aluko beat Thomas Rogne before cutting inside Charlie Mulgrew and firing a shot past Forster in the Celtic goal.

Celtic scarcely featured as an attacking threat in the first half but moments after going behind Georgios Samaras produced one of the most scintillating pieces of skill on the day.  The Greek international collected the ball 70 yards from goal, beat four opponents before his shot from 12 yards was saved by Alan McGregor.  Anthony Stokes mishit the rebound allowing McGregor to tip over.

Stokes forced a further save from McGregor with a fine volley after controlling on his chest but the game was soon to look ominous for Celtic.  Cha Du-Ri was caught wrong side of Lee Wallace and made the slighted touch on the Rangers player who went to ground two yards outside the penalty area.  Referee Calum Murray sent Cha off despite the covering attendance of Charlie Mulgrew.

Despite their numerical advantage Rangers seemed content to prevent Celtic scoring, Fraster Forster didn’t make a single save while Celtic were numerically on level terms or only a single man down.  Ten minutes after the break Victor Wanyama was red carded for a two footed tackle on Steven Whittaker.

Lee McCulloch was fortunate to remain on the field after elbowing Scott Brown on the head.  In a carbon copy of the incident which ended Beram Kayal’s season in December, McCulloch went to ground after the incident until attended by a physio, which perhaps tempered the referee’s response.  Clever, if predictable.

With things clearly not going their way Celtic then lost an offside goal.  Celtic had an opportunity to make an attempt on goal when they won a free kick 28 yards out.  With Charlie Mulgrew still running into position Scott Brown played a quick pass to Kris Commons but Celtic players were crowded out by a number of opponents and lost possession.  Rangers broke forward and applied pressure which brought the best out of Fraser Forster but Andrew Little put Rangers two ahead from what was clearly an offside position.

A further breakaway on the 77th minute resulted in Lee Wallace putting Rangers three goals ahead.

Despite being two goals down substitute Kris Commons started to dictate play and brought Celtic their best period of possession.  In the 89th minute Georgios Samaras broke through the Rangers defence but was scythed to the ground by Bocanegra.  The referee awarded a penalty and ordered the Rangers player off.  Scott Brown scored the penalty

Moments later Commons got the better of Whittaker on Celtic’s left before being brought down by the Rangers player.  Commons found Thomas Rogne with the resultant free kick which the defender powered home.

Bad choice of colour has hit them where it hurts once again.

Man Utd fans have discarded millions of them in green and yellow, rendering them free stock for a minimal amount of Manchester midgie raking. They have NO sense of business acumen.

    “Stupid huns, you’re fired”.

  3. Before the game today, did anyone else see the coffin being marched down the road by our fans? Absolutely hilarious!! Police didn’t know what to do.

Talking to a Govan police sergeant I know after the game he was told that a funeral director had phoned the police to ask if it was ok for him to drive his hearse down Edmiston Drive today. He was alledgedly approached by some Celtic fans to do it for a 4 figure sum!

I was sitting in the back row of the front of the Broomloan Rd stand today, in the section next to the enclosure. There were 4 police officers standing behind me. About 10 rows in front of me a fan had got 2 of the bamboo poles that held the flags and made them into a cross. He just stood there with this cross facing the huns in the enclosure! The police all started talking about it and pointing down to it. I turned and asked them why they moved in to take it down. He said that it was causing offence. I asked to who was it causing offence? They said there was probably someone who would find it offensive!!

    Mindblowing stupidity.

I was hoping to add it to my dad’s 1967 programme and put it on the wall, never mind

  6. Was disappointed by today’s result, but i recall when we beat rangers 3-0 at hampden when they had the league won, good memory but they won the league and it is the league title we want.

what we have learnt from this season:

foster is good enough to be celtic no. 1

mathews is still learning the game, but will develop further

    lustig – unknown

izzy’s will be back to his best next year

    blackman – unknown

rogne will develop into a good c.b

    wilson is pacy

charile the c. b, needs to put on a least 1 stone of muscle

we miss kayal, first name on team sheet when fit

    brown is a captain

    victor is learning

ledley is reliable (most of the time)

    sammy is a class act

forrest is still learning but will develop further

    mcgough, still young and learning

    stokes will score goals

    hooper will score goals

    bangurra (unknown)

we are still short in terms of being a very good team and we need a couple of quality additions namely a powerful c.b, powerful forward and a creative midfielder.

    we have also learned that:

    m. wilson is injury prone and should be free agent in summer

cha is never a right back and should be free agent in summer

dan is a liability and should be free agent in the summer

loovens is a liability and should be free agent in the summer

thompson never fulfilled potential and should be free agent in summer

o’dea never worked out and should be free agent in the summer

jaurez will most likely never play for celtic again and should be moved on if possible

ki- for all his ability ought to be moved on as the spl does not suit him at all.

mccourt not fit enough and looks like leaving in the summer

commons (dont know why) but he’ll be leaving in the summer

mcginn not good enough and should be leaving in the summer

radmussion not in the plans of NL and should be leaving in the summer

murphy not in the plans and should be off in the summer

we need to remember Rome was not built in a day. NL is trying to shape his team and a huge amount of his budget is spent on 8 players he did not sign for us and another 5 he did buy but 2 of them were free, 1 cost 350k, and the other 2 cost 1 million +. i would guess we could get anything between 9 and 12 million for all the players above and would save about 120k per weeks i.e. 6.5 million per year.

    questions:

would 6.5 million in the budget every year allow us to pay the wages of 3 quality players?

would between 9-12 million afford us 3 quality players this summer?

would another 3 quality players in key areas improve the squad?

would another 3 quality players in key areas improve our ability to compete in europe?

would another 3 quality players in key areas improve our ability to win pressure matches?

does NL need more time to finish the job he has started?

i honestly think NL is building what will be a very strong team that will dominate scottish football and preform well in europe and it will do so within our budget

    hail hail

  7. ex-cathedra

“if we needed someone to rough them up Brozek at 5’11 and not carrying an injury, would have been more likely.”

With 2 minutes to go, we wanted someone to get on the end of a Sammi knockdown or pounce on a scrap. Hooper has done that umpteen times. Brozek has yet to prove anything. He will get his chance when this league is won

The main reason I am here is cos it’s much cheaper than your part of the world to live a good life.

A friend has just sold his house in Ireland and bought a cave here, he has a small pension which he can live off here, but would struggle big time do do the same in Ireland.

With what he has left over and his pension, he will live out his days here in peace, and the best thing about it, it’s totally hun free.

  20. Mr X loves having a "fly kick" on

We’ll still win this league and it will be very sweet but naturally gutted about today.

    Random thoughts :

MIBs rank rotten – same as it ever was.

That said, we were like a rabbit in the headlights in the first 20 mins. We were there to wrap up the title but simply didn’t press and harry enough. Why? I’m sure even Neil can’t explain that.

Sammi – excellent. The man has transformed himself this season and worked tirelessly today.

Cha – a liability and should never have walked into the side, especially as it involved moving our natural right back to left back.

Ki – simply doesn’t do enough and is often missing in the big games. His deficiencies highlight our lack of a pivotal playmaker.

Broony – worked hard throughout and took a great penalty.

The huns can have their one day of happiness today but tomorrow it’s back to harsh realities for them.

We are a young side, still developing, but showing promise. Mistakes are being made but we will still be worthy champions.

  21. The more I have watched Vic’s sending off, the more I am convinced he shouldn’t have been sent off, in real time I thought whitakicker was getting the red card.

Watch it again, Vic is winning the ball all day long, his studs are down, he wins the balls with his right foot, his left sort of has to follow on, then watch the hun, he turns his body to the right and goes over teh top on Vic’s shin, deliberate leg breaking challenge, and the scum hun never even got booked for his many fouls, aye as level as it gets in hunland.

  22. Can any of our Irish Bhoys answer this please.

We all know that the huns have won a good few of their ‘world record’ league titles on the back of ‘honest mistakes’ and the corruption in Scottish football.

Have lingfield won titles also with cheating and corruption, have to be honest and admit i dont know much about the football in Ireland.

I’ll be gutted if the answers no.

  23. We really shouldn’t worry too much as today’s tainted win will not be their main memory of season 2011/12.

Yes we lost today but I still left the pub with a smile on my face partly for the way the boys rallied at the end but also because we are not, nor will we ever be like them.

The pub I was in had a mixed crowd at opposite ends and whilst they cheered their goals they still trotted out with their tails between their legs at the end. Why, because they know it is over and they know that we know that it is over and I am not just talking about the league for as Private Fraser would have said– “they`re doomed” and they are starting to realise it.

Thanks for your post. I’ve just been trying to find highlights of the sending offs and the goals.

I can’t agree about Wanyama’s tackle not being a red. I know he doesn’t make contact but I don’t believe that he is in control as both feet are off the ground. Having said that I can’t understand how Whitacker isn’t shown a red also, he clearly goes over the ball with his right foot, it’s as bad a challenge if not worse than Victors.
