Rangers and Newco both look marooned without clarification

872

So what do we know?

Need for clarification

Rangers’ potential new owner has asked for clarification on what he is buying, a franchise with a place in the SPL or the middle of a doughnut, with the ability to apply for membership to the Scottish Football League.

That clarification has not been delivered, which must undermine Rangers sale.

Rangers want an extension

Despite needing clarification, Rangers administrators, Duff and Phelps, failed to attend the meeting and asked for a further extension (it’s like the 2007-08 league season all over again).  Curious, to say the least. Clearly they were not in a position to offer the SPL information that would assist their case.

To be revealed before 30 May

The next meeting is on 30 May, by then the First Tier Tribunal on Rangers Employee Benefit Trust will have reported.  There will also be a considerable amount of information in the public domain on how Rangers operated under Sir David Murray.  With all this information available, it will be impossible for the SPL to further delay publishing the findings of their inquiry into Improper Registration of Players by Rangers.  In disciplinary terms, this is the big one.

What about Craig Whyte?

Bill Miller was appointed preferred bidder on Thursday but, as floating charge holder, Craig Whyte can ask the court to block stop Duff and Phelps disposing of Ibrox.  We don’t know Craig Whyte’s mind, or if he has a deal with Miller, but if they are not working in partnership, you can expect a late and effective legal block put in place to stop the disposal of Ibrox.

So what does it mean?

The chance of a Newco being in place, in the SPL or SFL, for the start of next season has never been more remote.  On 7 May they don’t have a buyer, after 10 weeks they don’t have the stadium and the moral outrage over what looked likely to be voted through today is beginning to gain traction.

Today was the best chance Rangers had to cut a quick deal with the SPL.  Further delay only means more time for the other clubs to work on contingency plans and to be lobbied by their own supporters.

We are six days away from the end of the season and Duff and Phelps have to put enough of a confirmed deal in place to convince someone to part with £11.2m.  They don’t have passage into the league and they don’t have a stadium to sell.

If Bill Miller stays in the game until the end of the week and submits a formal offer for the stadium and other assets, we can expect Craig Whyte to go to court to halt the process.  I cannot see how or why Miller, who doesn’t even have a passport and has made no moved to come over and negotiate in person, would put £11.2m on the table when he doesn’t know what he is buying, or what sporting and financial penalties are coming his way.

Rangers will have to overcome all these obstacles long before 30 May if they are to stay in the game long enough for Newco to inherit their place in the SPL but their chances of surviving that long is dependent on a positive outcome from the meeting that has now been postponed.

They look marooned; I don’t think they are going to make it.

  3. Here is a novel idea, inspired by something MWD mentioned to me on Friday.

Why don’t we play the other ten Clubs, forfeit our points against them. Doesn’t the season ticket renewal offer a price for adults that do not include them games??

Tell the SPL we will not recognise them and refused to play them. It would also get it right up Sky, no four games them…

    Keep the Faith!

  7. I understand that Richard Wilson has tweeted that the Mayan prophecy is true and that the world will indeed end on 21 December.

That will probably explain why Celtic decide not to resign and why UEFA decide not to prevent the huns being kept in the SPL.

You are right that we could get out voted, but I wouldn’t under estimate what we can do as a club. I would however struggle to accept us just rolling over and accepting this without a fight.

However, we could always go and borrow £150m and win the champions league next season and then bust the club and come back as Newco Celts :-)

We are at the crossroads in Scottish football, Will integrity overcome the cheating establishment? I think we need the help of St Hector to help us. This will play out over the next 2-3 weeks, IMO.

  11. In the mythical Cowboy town called Sectarian Practices Lodge, the local evil black-hatted bully lies dying. He shot himself while polishing his diamond encrusted rifle during his latest raid on the town bank. He had been distracted through laughter when looking at the googly eyes of his current sidekick, Shooter “McGavigan” Whytie, who had fled the scene, reportedly with some loose change from the stricken bully’s pockets.

Concerned citizens gather round the wounded body to discuss how they will handle the situation. Despite their resentment at years of bullying, theft and abuse, they make conciliatory noises towards the bully as they hear, from his breathing, that he lives yet and may harm them still.

They talk to him of how they may restore him to better health. Some suggest that he may consider reforming his ways to treat them better if they continue to help him, but they drop these suggestions quickly as they hear his anger rise and he begins to note the faces of anyone making negative comments.

They are aware that a Federal Marshall is investigating his wrongdoings but he seems content to travel by slow stagecoach on his journey from the state courthouse and is not expected for some time yet.

Meanwhile a colleague of the evil man, name of Tennessee Bill Miller, is riding in swiftly, well, at least compared to the lawman’s journey he is being quick, and the townsfolk fear that he is either going to restore the Town Bully to his former status or he is going to find his buried treasure and finish him off himself. There’s not much honour between thieves, after all.

Meanwhile, in another part of town, the good people are ignoring the scene, neither cowed nor inclined to murder a weakened man. They are hoping that he will die of his wounds before either the lawman or his fellow outlaw have time to administer any coup de grace.

For, after all, the Town Bully has many sons and followers, who are looking to nurture their wrath and create a long running feud. They need someone to blame for the death of their father and their leader. If Tennessee Bill kills the bully, they will feud with all the territory’s Outlaws until they win back their father’s position. If the Marshall hangs the Town Bully, they will fight the law for years to come, and if the good citizens finish him off, they will continue their father’s feud with them and make their lives miserable.

But, if he dies meantime of his own self-inflicted wounds, before medical help reaches the scene, because the citizens are dithering and spend days debating, on the question of which town has the nearest and best doctor, then who will the family and friends blame? On whom can they take revenge if their father was found to have killed himself?

Are we saying here that, if the decision is delayed until a Newco is in place, they will not be punished for up to 15 years of cheating………?

If that’s what the delays are all about, they should hang their heads in shame, they really should …….. They won’t get away with THAT one…… What a shower…..

  16. I’ve been asked to consider the catch 22 which faces the men with the decision to make regarding Newco SPL direct entry.

Say “no” – hostility in overdrive, as per Ali McCoist and Sandy Jardine, and numerous threatening individuals and groups throughout the country.

Say “yes” – stand accused of selling sporting intergrity down the river, hostility from every other club’s supporters, including your own – a legacy that will never go away.

A lose/lose scenario, if ever there was one.

How welcome would a higher body ruling on illegal, offshore payments and illegal player registrations be for you in those circumstances?

I am told that the evidence, when it is released with the ruling on EBTs, will leave nobody in football with any decision to make. It will be as conclusive as it is embarrassing for certain individuals.

  20. Hamburg – There was an unexpected

turn of events at the press conference

called by FC St. Pauli on Monday

afternoon, when the Bundesliga 2 club

announced that they will be retaining

the services of André Schubert as head

    coach for next season.

    “The executive committee and supervisory

    board have reached a unanimous

agreement on that,” St. Pauli president

Stefan Orth said. It was a decision that came

as a surprise not only to the Hamburg

    newspapers which had been reporting

Schubert’s imminent dismissal but also, by

his own admission, to the 40-year-old coach

    himself.

    Schubert prepared for the worst

The executive and the supervisory board

had given the green light to maintaining the

current arrangement in a meeting that

ended only an hour prior to the press

    conference and Schubert acknowledged that,

“I’d gone in there with the feeling that it was

pretty much the end of the road, based on

the developments of the past few days.”

“The media view was that we would parting

ways. Internally, the situation was on a

    knife-edge,” Orth said, describing the

    mounting speculation that differences

between the coach and club functionaries

and representatives, as well as inter-

personal problems with the players, had

    rendered Schubert’s position untenable.

    Coach promises improvements

Schubert himself conceded that, “I maybe

didn’t always choose my words carefully

enough,” and vowed, “I’ll be approaching a

few things differently from now on as far as

working together and communicating go.” At

the same time, he was adamant that, “I

won’t be twisting myself inside out. But that

doesn’t mean you have to be incapable of

    learning.”

“It would be dishonest to say that there

    haven’t been some atmospheric

    disturbances,” Orth expanded, “but after

our discussion today, we’re confident that

this will work out. It’s been a bumpy start,

but we’re convinced now that it will work.”

Above all because, “There can be no

complaints about his ability. He’s an

excellent coach,” the president made clear.

The decision to retain Schubert “was arrived

at gradually over the past few weeks, when

we repeatedly got together and thrashed

things out. It’s not down to the fact that we

beat SC Paderborn 5-0, even if it is nice to

end the season on a high note.”

    Chemistry there between players and

    coach

Orth said that during Sunday’s final round of

league action, “My mind was in Düsseldorf,

where I was hoping something might still

    happen.” Fortuna’s home draw with

Duisburg was enough in the end to edge St.

Pauli out of the promotion play-off spot on

goal difference, but the performance against

Paderborn “showed that things are fine

between the team and the coach.”

Schubert agrees, pointing out that “We

outran our opponents in 32 of our 34 games

this season. No team overturned a deficit

more often than St. Pauli. If you’d watched

how we celebrated together, you wouldn’t

be saying that the chemistry’s not there!”

Accordingly, he is not expecting the events

of the past weeks, culminating in the

premature reports of his dismissal, to have

any adverse affect on his authority: “Now I

can focus fully on my job again. I promise to

    give it my all.”
