Rangers improper player registration evidence mounts

1152

More evidence emerged today on how Rangers recompensed players through their Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) scheme in The Sun newspaper, who have a draft contract Rangers offered an unnamed player.  The contract was a letter confirming a six figure payment as well as a £1200 per game appearance bonus.

An accountant told Sun reporters Paul Thornton and Ewing Grahame:

“I have been shown a contract of employment showing how much money players were going to get but also a back letter which I presume that individual has assumed is part of his salary. It seems like a contract.

“If the two documents are handed to someone together, is that seen as being his overall package? If the answer to that is yes then there is a problem because the money that goes into the trust really should be getting taxed because it is his salary.

“The fact it is there as a back letter at all suggests it is dodgy.”

Attention is obviously drawn to the potential criminal consequences of these tax arrangements but football fans throughout the country will be alarmed that Campbell Ogilvie, the man who was general secretary and director of Rangers when the EBT scheme started, is currently president of the SFA and would have been involved in scoping out the secret remit of the SFA inquiry into Rangers, which was asked to report within an incredibly quick two week period.  Ogilvie is also one of the few men the inquiry will report to.

If the allegations in today’s Sun are accurate, Rangers have improperly registered football players for a period of around a decade.  The penalty for playing an improperly registered footballer in any game is a 3-0 forfeit.

When the SFA president is in a position to confirm all of this, the association have all information they require to make a ruling on this, but despite these allegations being widely reported for many months, they have yet to even acknowledge there is anything to investigate.

Can you imagine the scrutiny the Football Association in England’s board and chief executive would be exposed to if this scandal was not being actioned?

TET- ta,Sportscene on now, surely MacLean will mention the huns sing song……..maybe not.

  2. Its clear now that agents/lawyers were aware of these dual contracts as were Celtic as they were competing against Rangers for the same players.Celtic in turn would have approached the SFA about the issue who clearly did nothing. But the other guilty party may have been the PFA.I assume Celtic would have made them aware of their concerns. As I said before most people within the game probably new about all this going on.If you find nothing is changing you turn to the next best thing get your men into key positions to bring about change.Thats what Rangers did.Celtic went the European route. How many clubs does this involve in Scotland.Remember agents will move about with the same player and try the same thing on are Hearts implicated.Who knows. To me the game in Scotland could be over now

  3. Would be happy with Charlie for POTM, but I reckon Broonie should be in with a shout too – some inspirational performances and a few goals too (and let’s not forget penalties – tonight was evidence that a good penalty-taker is gold-dust)

  5. Chris Torey;

On the rosary beads issue, I didn’t see the post bit it seems ill advised at best.

I’m impressed that you managed to a five line post with only coded insults.

    Reasoned argument is fine Chris.

You should try it sometime, you’d probably be quite good at it.

The ‘socialist simpleton’, ‘Che wet his pants’ insults are what let you down.

I’m not a religious person but I fully respect those that are.

I wouldn’t dream of making insulting comments about those you hold dear.

I guess what I’m saying is ‘get beyond insults’.

Jelly ‘n ice-cream to you pal

a quick look through our squad tells a story of players who have done little and are unlikely to do anything, but limit the opportunity for our younger players

dont think chavi, loovens, o’dea, wilson, cha and thompson, mcginn, murphy, juarez, radmussion, mccourt, blackman have made a telling contribution to our title chase, but they have all took a good wage, dan has contrubuted, but is not suited to celtics high pressing game, which exposes his lack of pace

by my reckoning we are paying about 120k per week on all these players, yet they offer little,

no thanks just give me another 2/3 quality players

Phil should check current and past employee pension plan and personal tax liabilities.

  8. John Martin (born 27 October 1958) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Airdrieonians for nineteen years and later spent one season at Cowdenbeath. He has appeared in two Scottish Cup finals and one motion picture (A Shot at Glory). He often swung on the crossbar during games at the behest of supporters.

Opposition fans would often taunt him with chants of “scab” due to his reported strike breaking exploits during the miner’s strike of 1983/84.[1]

The John Martin that taught me is not the one above. I was born 1959 and the guy that taught me would have been 15-20 years older.

I agree with you about these players. These are the guys I maenat when I talked about players on the periphery of the team who weren’t likely to make a break through. Previously some posters have talked about some of our regulars (mainly midfield) being sold because we had too many. I agree with the two or three quality as opposed to having 6 or 7 who just make up the numbers. Please don’t sell any of our stars – I want us to win the Champions League again!

    Hail! Hail!

  11. Right oh the voting line have now slammed shut!

Final results (in my head so might be one or two out!)

    Mulgrew : 14

    Ledley : 8

    Broony : 2

    Forster : 1

    Daniel Cousin : 1

    Craig Whyte : 1

So that’s it then, Lionel Mulgrew takes the crown of CQN’s February player of the month!

Thanks to all who voted, and to Paddy G who told me to keep it going though Joe wouldn’t have cared for it, I was going to give it to both of them!

    oooooooooooooo

we don’t pay anything, the squad is the squad, how many of those players are on loan? how many are injured? ‘Limit the oppurtunity for our younger players’? What does that mean? Have players of a better quality than have been given first team oppurtunities this year been sidelined?

watch some of the Rangers game today and the latest in there singing of Hymns, anyway it reminded of a holiday in May a few years ago in Aya Napa in Cyprus (to old for clubbing) the one Gordon Strachan Played Maloney in stead of Aidan at Ibrox,We Had booked a bus tour into Famagusta (ghost town) the Turkey side.Dropped off at our appartment by the bus,on our return,I crossed the road to watch what was left of the game with the wife,Rankers where one up the pub was reasonably quiet, but sitting in front of me where a man and three woman with them strips on,and woollen scarfs (Rankers) I said to the wife lets get out of here, what about the game she said, reply from me is not repeatable.otherwise it was a great holiday.

    Just scrolling back.

Thanks to everybody who replied to my post about not selling off players unless we need to. Some of you have mentioned several players whom I would have no problem selling off and agree with you that it would save about £100 – £120k per week on wages and that money could be used to buy/pay wages for a couple of quality players.

The point I was trying to make was that we benefitted from having a very large squad earlier in the season when Neil was struggling to name a team (mainly defensive players) due to his lengthy injury list. Not too many of the players mentioned made many appearances – some out on loan at other clubs. So I wouldn’t have any problems selling them on/letting them go. I would be sad about Mark Wilson though. He had a great season last season but is injury prone. Mark is a true Celt.

  22. Are there any legal costs outstanding due to the FTT Tribunal and will the administrators judge that to be a valid spend of money. Could they be in a position of needing clever lawyers but not having the money to pay for them. My head hurts from all of this. Well done Lennie !
