Ranters regret, BDO and SPL £250k fine

201

Last week we shone a light on why newco may have withdrawn their ill-conceived rant against Dundee United over the SFA’s award of £204k to newco as Training Compensation for Charlie Telfer signed out of contract.

Where Training Compensation is disputed, the SFA are obliged to award the losing club the entire amount of money due according to the set scale, from when the player was still at school.  The club which receives the money is then obliged to pay any earlier clubs the according to period they developed the player.

This is where Rangers’ liquidators, BDO, come in.  Rangers membership of the SFA expired in August 2012, just a few weeks after newco began life with a cup-tie against Brechin City, but Rangers were the club who developed Telfer between 2006 and 2012, so they are entitled to make a claim on the money newco will collect on their behalf.

It’s unlikely Dundee United have already paid newco, so if newco dispute they owe oldco Rangers this money, BDO are likely to ask a court to freeze the transaction before it is fulfilled.  United would be unable to discharge their debt by paying newo until the court made a ruling in their favour.

United chairman, Steven Thompson, may or may not have said “You’re only two years old” when offering a lesser figure for Telfer, but whoever penned the withdrawn statement for newco, they missed the point.  Someone should have advised newco, “You’re only two years old, take the money on offer and don’t push for an explicit Training Compensation figure.”

Cognitive Dissonance alert, we now face the possibility of newco paying a football debt to oldco.

In the same article last week, we brought up the subject of Rangers’ as-yet unpaid £250k fine for the illegally avoiding tax and breaking player registration rules.  The fine, levied by an SPL inquiry, is almost two years old now.  As part of their SFA membership application, newco agreed to meet all football debts, but there was previously insufficient motivation from the SPFL, who assumed SPL assets and liabilities, to enforce the fine on newco.

I hear that attitudes changed the instant newco attempted to rub people’s noses in the dirty stuff with that rant on the Telfer decision.

  2. Paul you may wish to move on to ‘easier’ matters but the outstanding issue for Celtic and our supporters at the moment must be the Tonev situation.

As his employer Celtic must fully discharge it’s responsibilities to Alexander Tonev and must be seen to be doing everything it can to support him.

If innocent as I believe he is, he must be going through absolute hell at the moment.

    Good for you mate.

I’ve been offered a 1-year contract to start 5th January with a big financial institution in the heart of Edinburgh.

I retire officially in under 4 years so contracting is ideal for me and I’ll be self-employed. I have to decide by Friday.

I wasn’t planning to work again but was made an offer I can’t refuse. I’ve had 6 months off and now feel ready to get back into it.

    Looking like a go-er.

“the five-way-agreement is an illegal document” ?

I’m much, much more concerned with what Celtic are going to do about the SFA and their victimisation of Alex Tonev. He is, after all, a Celtic player; he is one of the Celtic Family.

Or do we really hate the huns and revel in their muck more than we care about our players and our club and our global reputation?

As well as the side issue of the meaning of justice and justice being seeing to being done. That may be insignificant to some but to me… it’s not.

  11. It looks like the worm is turning and the powers that be are conspiring to pressurise Ashley and this current version of Rangers.

  15. A wee drop in to the LSE RIFC Shares Discussion Board this am brings up these beauties.

“What these announcements tell us is that there is no possibility of any pay off to Mr McCoist today. Follow my logic. First announcement is an appeal for funding. Second announcement infers the last thing Ashley can do at this moment is cut a cheque for McCoist to walk away. Is this what many of you have been trying to articulate? There has been no announcement of a loan (e.g. Letham facility) so Mr McCoist will continue in his role for one year. If you are looking for spin, do not despair, as it’s on its way. 1. “Having received assurances from the board , Mr McCoist has withdrawn his letter of resignation and continues in his role as Rangers first team manager.” 2. ” The dialogue between Mr McCoist and the board has been very positive. Both parties have agreed to have more dialogue in the future. Mr McCoist will continue in his role of first team manager.”

Then there is an unusually prescient view from one of the Undead followers.

    2. “Mike Ashley may not be a saint and of course he is investing in Rangers in order to turn a profit. However in comparison to McCoist, Green et al he is not going to milk the club for every penny. He is cutting costs and hopefully will ditch the overpaid prima donnas on the playing staff. If that means we don’t get promotion this year then so be it. I would rather be solvent in the Championship tha bankrupt in the premiership.”

Now, after that wee diversion, I hope to hear more from our Club about the on-going support for one of our players!!

  16. So it looks like whoever sanctioned the “rub their noses in it” press release at Sevco last week has cost their club £250k in a fine that was on the back burner. Plus who is to say that BDO wouldn’t have made a claim on the Telfer award had it not been for the same statement. (Possibly £125k)

Their arrogance knows no bound and continues to cost them dearly.

The guilty party would do well to duck and dive around the corridors of Ibrokes for the foreseeable future. Bumping into Del Boy Llambias should be avoided at all costs.

  21. McCoist will be shown the door today. Any money he is due doesn’t have to be paid today. Sevco can either tell him to sue them, or they can pay him some time in the future, although that might result in McCoist going to court to freeze the amount due because the club is in danger of insolvency. Now that would be funny.

  24. Where do Celtic stand under Scottish Labour Law, don’t they have a duty to look after their employees?

If Celtic believe Alex Tonev then they must take it the whole way, which to my mind means over and above the CSA, it means a civil court.

Oh! but that would mean possible sanctions from UEFA… oh! oh!

So what do we do, do we discard Alex Tonev to the vagary of a tainted future or do we do what our founding fathers would most likely have done and fight the bastards who smear us at every turn?

If as they said Celtic back Alecks the whole 9 yards ( and they should imo) and he decided to sue Logan and or sfa for defamation of character in a proper court of law would that be seen by uefa as breaching their rules. As it is the player suing and not the club surely they could not ban Celtic from European tournament but Celtic could still support the bhoy by providing his legal team.

Where are the demands for answers coming from?

  29. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS:

The ‘five-way-agreement’ threw integrity, not just sporting integrity but integrity itself, into the sewer…. and we endorsed it and do. So why get our noses into a twist, that’s what we endorsed, we set the benchmark of integrity by declaring that integrity is no longer a prerequisite to sport or sporting competition.

Think about it for a few minutes, just think about it.

We bought into it so we can’t ever complain about it.

Scottish football is played without a consideration to integrity therefore it is a circus of charlatans and thieves.

  30. I agree that Celtic must support Tonev, which they have certainly done up till now. They have announced that they have asked the SFA for a meeting to discuss the verdict further.

As it looks like CAS is a non-starter, I am left wondering what more Celtic can do beyond proposed discussions.

I have read a few posters say we should just play Tonev regardless. That would be madness and would rightly incur very severe sanctions against the club.

I believe all the club can do is accept the punishment under protest, by making a clear statement that they believe their player was unfairly treated and that the verdict was unjust and biased.

I am open to be persuaded otherwise if someone can come up with another path that may be taken.
