Recruit, develop, reputation: the virtuous cycle

228

The thing about signing footballers who can transform you, those with real talent which has yet to be realised by the wider market, is that they are unbelievably difficult to find.  Getting this right is not the only requirement in propelling a club forward, but it is a necessary one.

You also need to transform the potential you sign into an end product.  So much talent is left to wither on the vine across European football as clubs hoard talent in an attempt to control their corner of the market.  If you can align great recruitment with manager who has the space to allow talent to develop, you are very fortunate.

Reputation counts as well.  To all the world, it looked like we picked Benfica’s pocket with Jota.  Why would they let another great prospect leave on the same path?  Benfica won big time with Jota.  They gave him to a club that was able to transform him into a £25m player, with a significant remittance going back to Lisbon.

That’s why we got Paulo Bernardo. Benfica didn’t have space to develop him but they’re not stupid.  They know he has potential and they believe Celtic can transform him into a seriously good central midfielder.

Legia Warsaw earned €5m when they sold Maik Nawrocki to Celtic, but that’s only half the deal.  Legia are equally interested in the hefty sell-on fee they hope to earn when Celtic raise his profile south of the border.

Right now we have a reputation with players, agents and selling clubs as a place where great talent can come, thrive, and navigate a road to the top.  Recruitment, development and reputation feed a virtuous cycle.

Recruiting young players with great potential in such a transparent and competitive environment is almost impossibly difficult, but we have to be ruthlessly wedded to getting this right.  Developing players like this should be easier at Celtic than almost anywhere else.  We win lots, usually with plenty to spare, who else can say this?  Do this well and getting a great reputation is a consequence.

Paulo Bernardo (21) had started two Scottish Premiership and two Champions League games before 23 December.  His four starts since then, including his visit to Paisley yesterday, where he delivered two assists, illustrate where we are as a club. Maik Nawrocki is earlier in his journey but is already showing why he is in Glasgow.  More of this, please.

    ==============

Yup and these posts on SC iro Celtic doing nothing add a bit more.

I’d offer that this isn’t Celtic’s fight until such times that they are directly pulled into it. Everybody is aware of how the Huns behave when they don’t get their way and this is a classic example. Calls for a penalty when the explanation, irrespective of how it was arrived at, are wrong and misplaced and everyone knows it. Jumping in and playing the game with them is unnecessary at this stage, keep yer powder dry Celtic! The SFA have rules and regs covering all eventualities and outcomes, oblique and ambiguous wording guarantees it, so will string them along as far as they can until it becomes apparent that things are getting too hot for them (the SFA) to reasonably argue anymore, at that point they’ll cover their ears and say “Blah, Blah, Blah…William Collum has been relieved of duties until further notice!”

No bad thing as he’s feckin useless anyway but bad optics if it looks like the Huns are controlling the narrative. At that point Celtic should become active. In the meantime let them continue to be the laughing stock!

I personally know the Head of Communications for TRFC. I Whatsapped him the Calton Tongues ‘Angry Bears Statement’ cartoon the other day, he read it and unusually I’ve had no reply from him, not a bit of banter or even a get it up ye! This isn’t like him and tells me they’re absolutely raging about this and it will need a strong SFA to sort it. It’s not Celtic’s problem at the moment!! and

Yup. As PB on CQN used to say “never interrupt your enemy” etc.

The SFA will have no option but to stand by the principle that the referee’s decision is final (even it turns out to be wrong) and if that is set aside then chaos follows.

They either stand by their man or surrender their authority to govern and of course risk turning every referee mistake into a possible compensation claim.

I doubt R2ngers have thought this through.

I recall that when Mowbray saw Dallas about the honest mistakes season he was given an explanation by Dallas on the rules that supported the referee decision and when Mowbray was sceptical he was asked is he calling the integrity of the referee (and Dallas) into account.

Yes can only be the answer to that if dishonesty is provable.

As then it is same now and R2ngers can do nothing about it and risk being faced with charges of bringing the game into disrepute if they misrepresent what took place at the clarification meeting.

This river needs no pushing by Celtic.

I don’t think our heavy involvement in drawing up the new regs was with a view to putting a stop to the Huns overspending. I don’t think you get to be vice chair of the ECL if you have such a parochial view on football, I think it’s probably best for Celtic in the long run if he didn’t

I also dont think the new regs are aimed particularly at the Huns. They have a relatively modest spend on transfers and their wage to income ratios are always pretty comfortably within the limits. And as you know transfer spend is amortized over the duration of contracts and 100% of the profit appears in the year it’s earned. I think they can continue to overspend on wages and transfers as long as they have the occasional big transfer.

I think they’re aimed more at the Italian teams and other big clubs who make massive losses but still spend upwards of 100% of their income on their football departments. Big clubs who could seriously shake the foundations of the game if they go under

Anyway, since when did the Huns not cheat?

I think the guidelines are just that – a guideline for the maximum. It doesn’t mean we should spend it, our model might suggest a lower ratio, it’s just intended to stop irresponsible clubs from acting without thinking of the consequences. I don’t think it’s a cause for the Huns or us to change our spending habits

    =============

Celtic’s involvement would not be parochial, however Celtic could certainly use what happened in Scotland to support the need for sustainability , the tide was with them so why not sail with it?

As regards FSR not working have you looked at the detail in rules? The degree of specification?

A helluva lot of effort put into documenting a pirates code that will not be enforced.

Football as a whole is aware of unsustainable practice and its consequences. In England Everton got points deducted for breaches of an FA equivalent of sustainability rules and I am reading Everton may get another points deduction based on latest accounts and Notts Forrest are next most vulnerable and Chelsea are also in the frame.

Clubs in England that do act sustainably will demand such action and it will be in Celtic’s best interest to demand the same.

I appreciate that after years of conditioning that the rules do not apply to R2ngers but those rules on football squad spending did not exist until FSR.

They are not there to put clubs out of business, they are there to keep them in business by making them live within their means.

As I explained Celtic’s greater football income derived mostly from CL will mean R2ngers can be outwaged within the rules with the gap increasing year on year IF the income is spent on the playing squad.

Of course if part of the football income t goes outside the club like on dividends, then it will not be R2ngers cheating us that will be the problem but Celtic cheating the support.

I just do not see that happening under FSR rules, the principles of which are already being applied by The FA in the form of points deduction, which has never before been used as a deterrent to financial chicanery.

UEFA know Rangers cheated, they know the SFA allowed it and more important they know the consequences in compensation terms for them if FSR is not properly applied by national associations and UEFA do not rigorously monitor applications and so allow a club later shown to have lied in their UEFA license application to beat teams who were not in breach and acted sustainably.

Rangers acted unsustainably for years because there were no rules to prevent them. Now there are with football sanctions for breaching and that will make a difference to their behaviour, but my main point stands Celtic CAN spend more on the playing squad without any sustainable worries or breach of rules risks.

So why didn’t they and if the gap grows with CL participation that question will loom larger and larger if our legitimate player squad spend is less than R2ngers legitimate squad spend?

  22. An Tearmann father Jim Lawlor sets it out clearly. The killing needs to stop. It is unclear how the hostages will be freed, that problem remains. It has been almost 40 years since I was in the Negev. I have no connections there just memories of the people and places. My desert farmer grew up in the same Tel Aviv apartment as Shmon Peres. She said that he was a good man who strongly desired peace with his Arab neighbours. Hannah was a Yemenite Arab herself, she just wanted peace for her children and grandchildren, peace with security. She hated Netanyahu and the right wing, hopefully the Israelites will reject his strategy and find a path to peace. HNY to you and yours too.

  23. Res12 was the biggest act of idiocy ever in the history of the Celtic supporter base.

10+ years of guffoonery spaffed up against the wall.

Seeking to change the rules in a rule book which nobody would ever apply to the huns….what?

No wonder the PLC board were rolling about the back seats of their chauffeur driven Rolls Royce`s laffin thur asses off at yeez.

It was akin to wearing a fur coat with no nickers on underneath…because if your own Celtic club is as bent as f then what were you really thinking about and how serious was this approach when certain Resolutioners were posing like haddies getting selfies took with Lawwell in the board room…talk about laughing stocks!
