Referee Mallenco scouted ahead of Celtic game

1081

The Guardian did an excellent piece on Wednesday on how referees in various European territories would view the penalty box wrestling of the Juventus players.  In short, there is a variance in how these offences are punished.  Who knew?

Juventus knew.  I hear they watched four videos of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco ahead of the Celtic game.

You have to admire their thoroughness.  They had a plan to combat Celtic and needed to know if the referee would let them away with it.  Gone are the days when someone at Juve would simply pick up the phone and ‘ask’.  The danger from Celtic was known, illegal holding would nullify this danger and watching a few videos established what players would get away with.

It’s no longer sufficient to scout your opponents, if you want an edge in this game, scout the referee too.

Every day’s a school day.

I hear from a good contact that a journalist who recently departed the media for a job in the lower leagues once wanted to be a bit of a Jungle Jim. Apparently he was keen to ditch his industry for a job at Celtic back in the 90s. What an escape!

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

  1. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy – I think we should be careful about the terminology used on here as it is becoming a bit racist: cheating Italians, conniving Spaniards. What about cheating opponents and conniving officials. We have Italian fans and are admired by many in Spain. I’m sure it must irk them to see their nationality used in such negative terms.

That’s exactly the sort of disingenuous bumfluffery I’d expect from someone with the shifty little eyes, greasy mouth, and soupy aroma of a Belgian. (thumbsup)

    Aye,yer probably right.

If it irks them that much, they can get off their backsides and find out why I referred to them in that manner.

Should any of them, having done so,still feel sufficiently irked as to ask for an apology,I shall give it due consideration.

And bearing in mind that the original post was to TALLYBHOY,who had said similar,they-like you-might well be on to plums.

  5. Celtic manager Neil Lennon says the club will seek “clarification” from Uefa on the refereeing in the Champions League defeat by Juventus.

The visiting defenders appeared to grapple Celtic players at set-pieces, with Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco refusing to award a penalty.

And Lennon said the Italians appeared to be fouling at every opportunity.

“We will compile a DVD, send it to Uefa and see what kind of answers we get,” he said.

“You don’t see our players doing that. There were pictures of the shirt coming off Gary Hooper’s back, credit to him for keeping his cool.”

Theoretically the pope can resign but as he is the Supreme Pontiff there is no one qualified to accept his resignation….where does that leave us now?

I’d rather eat horsemeat any day than the sh*te they put in sausages, burgers et al.

I had a mate who worked for a large producer of the above, in Scotland, and he said “don’t touch it with a barge pole”.

    So I don’t.

I worked in the office of a chicken factory when leaving school. You wouldn’t eat chicken either if you saw that place.

I also worked for a supermarket whilst at school and the fruit and vegtables were left outside most of the night when delivered with all sorts of rodents and stuff running all over it. The guy I worked with said that’s nothing what do you think has been running over it before it got to this country?

You wouldn’t eat anything if you saw how it was stored and made. I just eat everything. Life is too short!

  15. Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles – Talking of Donald Duck, Walt Disney and racists, why does Scrooge McDuck have a Scottish name and a Scottish accent? Racist stereotyping!

Scrooge McDuck is a capitalist role model, a Randian hero, a Nietzsche uber-duck. Atlas Quacked, if you will.

If only Scottish people understood the value of money the way the wise McDuck does, instead of imagining they can simply vote for things and have them magically appear with no negative consequences. (thumbsup)

A point with which I am in total agreement. There is an underlying xenophobia there even if not of the full blown sort.

Incidentally, do you and Hamiltontim feel that first and second on the posium remotely compares with a mention in the actual article? 0:-)

  17. Pogmathyonyahun I don’t think Walt Disney was ever noted for egalitarian or enlightened views. In fact he tried to charge his cartoonists for using his pencil sharpeners. On the basis that the pencils were theirs.

  18. I never ever have time to post on here anymore but I thought that you might want to know that the history of Celtic FC is one of the specialist subjects on Mastermind tonight at 8pm on BBC2.

I expect this is old news and half of you even know the contestant (I mean contender) but I’ve started so I’ll finish.

I’m not looking for an apology. Although I lazily chose to give two references from your post many others have been talking about ‘cheating Italians’ since the game.

I don’t apologise for raising the matter either. We would get easily upset on here if posters used disparaging adjectives followed by the ‘Irish’.

I thought O.G.’s scoop this week was in two parts.

The first part showed that Jabba has no shame. (Sorry O.G. but I knew that already!)

Is there a part two right enough?
