Referee Mallenco scouted ahead of Celtic game

1081

The Guardian did an excellent piece on Wednesday on how referees in various European territories would view the penalty box wrestling of the Juventus players.  In short, there is a variance in how these offences are punished.  Who knew?

Juventus knew.  I hear they watched four videos of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco ahead of the Celtic game.

You have to admire their thoroughness.  They had a plan to combat Celtic and needed to know if the referee would let them away with it.  Gone are the days when someone at Juve would simply pick up the phone and ‘ask’.  The danger from Celtic was known, illegal holding would nullify this danger and watching a few videos established what players would get away with.

It’s no longer sufficient to scout your opponents, if you want an edge in this game, scout the referee too.

Every day’s a school day.

I hear from a good contact that a journalist who recently departed the media for a job in the lower leagues once wanted to be a bit of a Jungle Jim. Apparently he was keen to ditch his industry for a job at Celtic back in the 90s. What an escape!

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

Just in so sorry if discussed. Juve might not have known who the ref would be. There are probably a limited number of refs that could have taken charge of the game and Juve had the resources to watch all of them, live or on tv

Glad to see Celtic asking UEFA for clarfication of referee decision not to penalise Juve.

Nothing as grand as that for me – although my late mother did threaten to send me to the Fort Augustus School many moons ago, as a means of trying to curb my rebellious nature.

The President of UEFA will be in Rome tomorrow night. The team he supports has a game there. You should be able to watch the game on the tele . The camera will pan to the VIPS in the posh seats. The President of UEFA will be sitting close to the President of Juventus and the likes of Nedved. Maybe Juve will score and you’ll get to see how happy that makes the President of UEFA

I believe the main culprit for Juventus on Tuesday night was actually Swiss. So I kind of don’t agree with your statement.

  8. Asking UEFA for clarification puts them on the spot. They decided not to punish Lenny for his criticism of the referee because they wanted the matter to be forgotten as quickly as possible.

  9. So … team for tomorrow?

A few missing so the likes of Kayal, McGeouch, Rogic and Watt could get starts. Stokes needs game time too.

Rogic looked good in flashes last weekend. Strong and two footed with a fair amount of skill.

We knew when we drew Juve the refereeing would impact the result somehow.

Had it been Man Utd on receiving end Fergie would have been done for assault.

  11. Team for tomorrow

As close to the team that beat them 4-0 a couple of weeks ago please Neil :))

  12. So, it seems I was completely wrong in my after match thoughts, when I said that the current Juventus were the same as the old match fixing Juventus, but they had moved from brown paper bags/sealed envelopes, to online banking/transfers…….

They are even better at this than I could have imagined! They have taken the bribing of officials straight out of the equation, (it was always a large flaw in match fixing), and moved onto ‘putting the outcome of the match into their favour’, by taking advantage of the match officials! The outcome of the game is less certain than an actual bribe, but the chances of getting caught and punished have been reduced to virtually zero. How ‘clever’ of them to adapt like this!!

”You have to admire their thoroughness.” The hell I do! I don’t admire anything about the cheating scumbags. Would you admire the thoughtfullness of someone who sends e-mails pretending to be a persons bank, when infact they are not, but simply looking for their details so as to rob them.? Sure, most people can see through this, but what about the elderly, infirm, or disabled who perhaps rely on something as life changingly helpful as online banking?

In a more sporting context, but outwith football, lets look at Tennis. Andy Murray has a new difficult opponent, so he studies his game. Fair enough. Andy spots some weaknesses, but he notices, that his oppenent is far far weaker in his standard of play, when his quick tempo is broken up. ie if Andy Murray can take his time in between points, take too much time getting back on court between breaks, and call more doctor/injury time than he needs, he can disrupt his opponent. (This already happens a lot in this sport, but some umpire’s crack down on it more than others). So Andy finds out in advance who the umpire is, and having watched some of his games, finds the umpire doesn’t make much if any effort to hurry a player up when the other complains about time wasting. Andy Murray wins Wimbledon by being ‘smart’ with his opponent and taking advantage of the umpire and the rules. This would make him a ruthless champion or a cheat? I guess some will say champion, but if its me, I wouldn’t be able to sleep or take any pleasure in my ‘win’

Just out of interest, if Celtic find out the next match official for the game in Turin, has a high % of giving out penalties and red cards, would that make it ok for us to dive in the Juventus box? (At this stage fighting fire with fire is always tempting, I will admit that, so I can understand a lot of people saying this would be ok, but do we really want the good name of Celtic being shown around the globe, with one of our players rolling around on the ground having pretendend to be hit by a Juventus player, to get him sent off?) Or consider this, we actually got one of the penalties we deserved in the first game, and it finished 1-1, but we knew deep in our hearts, that there was no chance we could beat this Juventus team at their own ground. But then we hear the ref for the return game is Scandanavian, and a lot of Spanish/Italian teams have complained about how he lets the other team kick and hurt their players without punishment. This is a way we could now win the match, we can go in ‘hard’ on their best players, not just man mark, but actually go for some rough tackless and cause some injuries with little chance of being sent off, should we do it? I personally would actually stop watching a Celtic team that did that until the manager was changed, but thats just me……

Call it smart, call it rule bending not breaking, call it evolution, admire it, be inspired by it, copy it, if you want. But not in my name please! Don’t ask my club to partake in any of this cheating. All evidence, if there is any, should be handed to Celtic, who should then make an official complaint. Is there any point? It won’t get the match replayed, but it should atleast ‘out’ the cheats who do this. I suppose we need to consider that Celtic were the only team in the last round who did not do this. If this is so, do we want to do a ‘Lance Armstrong’ and cheat to win because ‘everyone else does it’. Or should we stand up for the integrity of the game, point out the cheaters, and attempt to win inspite of the cheats? Lets say there is some evidence to ‘out’ Juventus, and they get the same official in the Semi, I wonder what his reaction would be to some of the jersey tugging and manhandling then……..

I don’t really care if it looks like sour grapes. Take this is far as it can be taken. Because if it really can be proved that Juventus watched games simply relating to the match officials, then no matter the reason, which can always be speculated on, it stinks. There simply is no good reason why you would want to watch video’s of the ref and his performance’s. It might not be breaking any rules, but it is 100% against the spirit that the game is supposed to be played by. Therefore, its is also cheating, pure and simple.

  13. The ref on Wednesday also done the Artmedia game at CP.After x amount of subs, diving and timewasting , i think he added 3 minutes. We were 4-0 up and all over them, maybe didnt want to miss his flight home.

I see the BBC managed to find a picture of Gary Hooper with his hands on Lichtensteinters face! I wonder how many pictures they had to traul through to find one that Hooper appears to be doing something wrong, instead of the other way round……

It’s not even balanced. The main picture just has everyone round the ref, with Hooper staring angry like at Lichtensteiner, and on the right hand side, to get to the article, there is a much smaller picture of Hooper with his hands on the guys face. BBC hinting that Celtic have nothing to complain about perhaps……??

  24. Alas Tallybhoy that Abbey has closed down due to lack of personnel and money. I had the privelege of a complete tour in the mid-seventies.

Like many places where a good drop used to served, it has been turned into flats. Not very tastefully IMO.

I once visited a monastery in Estonia in the mid-nineties where I had a stab at translating the Latin precis of the monastery’s history. Out popped an eavesdropping Dominican who spoke perfect English. A full tour ensued, at the end of which he sold me a hand crafted Rosary made of local marble. Known, quite fancifully in those parts as Dolomite. It cost fifteen quid and weighs 2 kilos. A bargain. I still have it. It makes an impressive prop at fancy dress parties.

I think that the only way that we could have

dealt with this – Juve Ref Carry-on would

have been for Neil to, replicate his charge

onto the pitch at FT to remonstrate with the

Ref ala Norris in the SCSF last season. imo

By doing this, Neil would have dragged this

entire scenario onto the – World Stage leaving

no hiding place or, room for cover-ups. imo

I know Neil would have been banned etc….but

I detect a can of worms with – Dallas finger/prints

all over it – so to speak.

Furthermore…I’m starting to think that…when it comes

to mibbery situations…Neil is now somewhat withdrawn.

For me, the best example of this was when – Elbows over

the ball assault on Kayal last December – Neil came out and

said – “…it was a fair challenge – just 2 players going for the ball.”

Well…knock me down with a feather.
