Referee Mallenco scouted ahead of Celtic game

1081

The Guardian did an excellent piece on Wednesday on how referees in various European territories would view the penalty box wrestling of the Juventus players.  In short, there is a variance in how these offences are punished.  Who knew?

Juventus knew.  I hear they watched four videos of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco ahead of the Celtic game.

You have to admire their thoroughness.  They had a plan to combat Celtic and needed to know if the referee would let them away with it.  Gone are the days when someone at Juve would simply pick up the phone and ‘ask’.  The danger from Celtic was known, illegal holding would nullify this danger and watching a few videos established what players would get away with.

It’s no longer sufficient to scout your opponents, if you want an edge in this game, scout the referee too.

Every day’s a school day.

I hear from a good contact that a journalist who recently departed the media for a job in the lower leagues once wanted to be a bit of a Jungle Jim. Apparently he was keen to ditch his industry for a job at Celtic back in the 90s. What an escape!

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

    Bobby Murdoch

    Stephan Lichtsteiner (sp). He was the guy involved in the vast majority of the wrestling/holding incidents.

    He’s as much Italian as Izzaguirre, Ambrose, Wanyama etc are Scottish.

  2. Bada Bing !

    Vialli ——

    Lots of post match interviews with Vialli in the Italian Press Nobody seems to have asked re the wrestling and he doesn’t appear to have been bothered enough to mention it .

    He did have lots to say about how well his pal Conte’s tactics had worked .

    Man works in the media — guess the guy knows the importance of that give the audience what the audience wants thing.

  3. Hat-trick Herron.

    Another penalty. Maybe it’s a UEFA mandate to make up for the other night.

    Well done that bhoy.

    3-0.

    thanks for the further clarification about the ‘cheating Italians’.

  5. Bobby Murdoch’s …. @ 16.11

    Lichtsteiner is Swiss, but the ethos of the team is very Italian. It was horrible, though to be absolutely fair it should be said that James F. dived to try and win a penalty. I didn’t like that. Didn’t like his whole performance in fact.

    I don’t quite understand your question. I just thought Auldheid’s words (robber barons, etc.) were a good description of the “Royals”.

    THE ORIGINAL SADIE’S BHOY

    As I said above-probably when you were posting….

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPS!!!!!!!!

    Shoulda spotted that,disnae alter the fact that he was one of many,the rest of whom were all Italian,and they were aided and abetted by a conniving Spanish ref.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    My original point is still valid,and I make no apologies for it.
    If you can refer me to a single match report which doesn’t state that the ref was Spanish,or refers to Juventus as Italians,I will gladly bow to your superior knowledge and concede the point.
    Otherwise,stop tying to find offence where none was intended.
    I quite CLEARLY did not brand ALL Italians as cheats,nor ALL Spaniards as conniving when I made the original post,
    Now,having made that clear to you,is there not a molehill somewhere nearby that you wish to declare as a rival to Ben Nevis?
  7. BMCUW .
    You need to say ———
    Chilean/ French / Italian / Swiss and Uruguyan cheats
  8. corrib04 is Neil Lennon on
    Kev Jungle,
    Thats a bit unfair and a wee bit nasty.
    The whole point about the cheating Italians is that they were a bunchacheating bassas,playing for Juventus.
    Now,of course,I recognise that they were not all Italian. Obviously. In the same way that Terry Butcher,Graham Roberts,Andy Goram,etc,wurnae born as a buncha OBs.
    But a few months at Ibrox?
    Well,it’s clearly the same mindset at Juventus.
    I left a coupla posts for you at the top of P6 on yesterday’s blog,around 6pm.
    A coupla posters added to them soon after.
    Hope you liked them-if not,might be worth a look.
  11. Italians will do anything to win. Remember the World Cup Final when Zidane got sent off?
    It’s the way they operate. They don’t see anything wrong with it.
    Different mentality!
  12. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on
    Swiss or not, he was playing to the team tactics ….
  13. Lichtensteiner definitely Swiss, but I thought I heard a ‘Barton’ moment when he put on an Italian accent to protest his innocence to the inept assistant behind the goal…
    a few ramblings…
    I wonder what MON’s reaction was to Tuesday night’s cheating by Juve. No, not ‘extraordinary…!!’
    I think he’ll have teased our Lenny a wee bit by telling him that he’d been outsmarted by the Juve coach, cretinous refereeing aside….that sort of preparation reminds me of the 1990 Grand Slam decider in egg-chasing, David Sole cunningly removing the sleeve of his jersey to combat Jeff Probyn’s questionable srummaging technique.
    Strachan would have focussed less on these mind games of the coaches as he has a more simplistic view of the human psyche than MON. Despite appearances, Strachan is a diplomat, witness the employment of a Rangers appeasing coach on his staff….not stupid.
    Every day a school day, as our wise host remarked. Up we get, let’s question uefa, let’s get a reaction from the players and move the **** on
  14. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS
    You’re right Lichtensteiner was a good full back here but he’s been gone ofr a long time I think he played in France before he went to Italy, he is a well travelled hardened pro in my opinion but I was still shocked at his behaviour on Tues, the Swiss been the nice guys who sit down to pee of world football!!
    I get yer drift just pulling yer chain!!
  15. What is it with these publicity-seeking Huns? SSN reporting that some unknown has signed a 5 year deal.
    Huh, a good agent would have got him a 2 year one.
    I remember that well-was down in London at the time.
    Cue mass consternation as Sole walked out,brilliant.
    Canny help thinking though that he should just have unpicked the stitches and watched the look on Probyn’s face as he was left holding eff-all.
  17. I think I can safely say KevJ is a nasty piece of work.We’ve had talk from him today of sectarianism,a dig at Paul McStay(who would you like beside you in the trenches–Paul McStay or KevJ?)and another go at Neil Lennon.There are only two CQN’s I wouldn’t have a pint and a yarn with,himself and Kojo and his non-de-plumes.Kojo though,does not denigrate the Celtic family on the whole, as does this mouthpiece.
  18. I had a fab / pedantic / hair splitting / angels dancing on a pin point chat with a Juve supporter re the wrestling .
    He happily accepted that Juve did it / he happily conceded that Juve could have been sanctioned for it —— but The Ref saw it / the Ref largely allowed it — such is life .[ A very Juve approach to life ]
    I told him – it’s cheating — he said —— no it’s not —- it’s only cheating if it is done covertly . If it’s cheating the Ref shouldn’t allow it.. . Cue a LOL from me.
    He couldn’t resist mentioning the Forrest dive .
    Best bit of homework/coaching preparation I think I’ve seen. Certainly one of the best publicised. I remember it having quite an impact on me at the time….McGeechan/Telfer always had a little something up their sleeves…
    Naw just a badly typed post. Sick of hearing about Sevco on SSN. We barely get a mention and they get a newsflash for signing some unknown kid on for 5 years in the 3rd division. Operation get Sevco up the leagues is alive and well at Sky!
  22. Good early afternoon Celts,
    Can we naw just call the Juve “bliddy cheats” and be done with it, there ye are job done.
    Now if ye want debate……..
    Paul67s leader talks of how the Juve done their homework on the referee but I’d go further and say they needed to nullify the obvious threat at corners and set pieces.
    Now we have all seen our forwards, especially Gary Hooper positioning himself beside the goalie to prevent or make it difficult to get to a crossball, what the Juve coaches went for was a means to lessen the threat by manning our player who’s job was to stand beside the goalie. I didnae like it but what we attempted to do could be considered as bad in a strictly football sense.
    We need to accept it,earn and move on. I’m confident our Lenny and the team will.
    Yet it was football fans-my mates,ffs-coming out with it!
    I too was racially abused at twickers one year. I took umbridge and will not be returning, especially as it was an English ******* who was doing the abusing!!
    I will not be returning to Ibrox either, as despite being among 10,000 of my own, I just don’t like being there with all the union jack waving crap that goes along with it. I’m a big boy now, so i will do as a i please.
  25. BMCUW……… The ‘shrine’ is in the front garden………..
    We are preparing for the wake; leaving tomorrow for the journey North, some 120 km……
    My prospective f-i-l took me to Lords in the mid-90s for a Test Match,he’s a Member,donchaknow…..
    After all the introductions,I grabbed a few beers and went down to watch the cricket.
    Left them all to the real business of the day-business!
    That’s why there are so many empty seats at sell-out Test Matches. All busy doing deals.
