Referee Mallenco scouted ahead of Celtic game

1081

The Guardian did an excellent piece on Wednesday on how referees in various European territories would view the penalty box wrestling of the Juventus players.  In short, there is a variance in how these offences are punished.  Who knew?

Juventus knew.  I hear they watched four videos of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco ahead of the Celtic game.

You have to admire their thoroughness.  They had a plan to combat Celtic and needed to know if the referee would let them away with it.  Gone are the days when someone at Juve would simply pick up the phone and ‘ask’.  The danger from Celtic was known, illegal holding would nullify this danger and watching a few videos established what players would get away with.

It’s no longer sufficient to scout your opponents, if you want an edge in this game, scout the referee too.

Every day’s a school day.

I hear from a good contact that a journalist who recently departed the media for a job in the lower leagues once wanted to be a bit of a Jungle Jim. Apparently he was keen to ditch his industry for a job at Celtic back in the 90s. What an escape!

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

Regarding my self imposed ban attending Ibrox. Fortunately, Whyte, Ally and laterly Charlie Green have all contributed in no small way to me not being tempted to attend Ibrox for a good few years to come. And for that, I am truly grateful. That said, I’m pretty sure the SFA will conspire for the 2 warm celtic/rangers balls to be drawn together for a meeting in the cup…

Same thing, any negativity and the old media will sieze the opportunity it’s always disappointing when Celtic fans jump on the band wagon.

Personally think, they caught Kris Commons out and he should be quietly reminded that Celtic are unique.

Efe Ambrose is infinitely better than the squad back up, and was first pick to play, he made mistakes, we move on.

Somebody at BBC Scotland fitba site is defo a hun (no surprise there).

Main headline is “Celtic seek Juve Clarification”.

Picture shows Hoops seemingly assaulting Juventus defender, with two hands pushing on his face.

Wonder how long it took them to find that picture?

  18. sixtaeseven – I saw that, had the exact same thought, and posted, I think, unless it got lost somewhere….. Don’t think Celtic can really complain, but would certainly be taking note. Someone had to choose which picture to go with, and for their own reasons, they chose that one.

As for Hooper tactics on the goalie we see in games, once I see Hooper manhandle the keeper and throw him into the back of the net, I will concede, and condem it. But as far as I can see, he is only standing his ground. If the keeper moves, I don’t see Hooper grabing him and shoving him around? I didn’t have any problem with the Juve defender trying to stand infront of Hooper, totally expected it, I even expected him go get away with a certain amount of pushing, shoving, shirt pulling etc. But the extent to which he took it, was a total infringement of the rules. He was shown a yellow card remember? (Hooper was too, but I think that deserves more of an explanation). However, he did the same things to other players when they switched with Hooper, and he was not penalised again? Why not? The shove on Brown was a straight red. How did the new official behind the goal not see this? If he did, why not say or do anything? Then, after Brown falls over, (from a strong push, no simulation required), the Juve defender falls to the ground holding his foot……. Coward, cheat and all round scumbag, sanctioned by his coach, who had a similar playing style. I don’t think its fair to compare what Hooper was doing, to what the Juve player did, its not even close.

  19. TBJ

I don’t think I’ve ever heard one Celtic player criticising another in public after a mistake in a game, if they have it’s been very, very rare.

I see this as a trap set by MSM, and it’s usually negotiated safely by all at Celtic, KC should reflect on his comments, including his tweet about Sevco, which was given panoramic coverage, for age old reasons.

  23. NUTTER ALERT……

CHARLES GREEN this week stepped up his investigation into the likelihood of participating in cross-border leagues by meeting Standard Liege chairman Roland Duchatelet.

After returning from a trip to Dubai, Qatar and Australia on club business, the Rangers chief executive travelled to Brussels for exploratory discussions.

Duchatelet spoke in December about the need to form a Dutch-Belgian league, insisting the game in those countries ‘would die’ without one.

He also claimed Liege would try to move into French football if the project did not get off the ground.

As well as the suggested Benelux combination, there appears to be an appetite for something along the same lines involving clubs in Russia and Ukraine a present.

Green has grown frustrated by a lack of significant movement on the reform of Scottish football in recent months and has similar issues to Duchatelet regarding his own club.

As talks about a variety of proposed new structures here continue to drag on, he feels Gers have no option but to consider other avenues.

Green is keen to explore how feasible cross-border competitions could be given it is something more and more people seem open to than before.

And he said: “The big issue for us at the moment is we don’t know what is happening domestically. Scottish football has been in a mess for some time.

“That’s not something which was brought about by Rangers’ demise – gates were dwindling before then and interest from fans and sponsors was diminishing.

“While I was away, Ross County’s chairman came out saying their fans didn’t support the proposed structure. St Mirren, I understand, have had a similar response.

“We’re not really sure what the SPL clubs are thinking of doing but clearly something has to happen. There has to be a fix but not with a sticky plaster that covers the cracks.

“A strategic review needs to take place but that will involve other countries and not just Scotland.

“It would be very wrong of me to sit by idly waiting to see what comes of that. I must explore all avenues and the issue of cross-border leagues is now on everyone’s lips.

“I recently visited the chairman of Standard Liege because he has made a statement about a Benelux league.

“There is already one in existence in the professional women’s game and a precedent is there in that respect.

“We’re seeing that kind of thing being looked at in the former Soviet states and in some of these countries, you have one or two very big clubs.

“After that, the rest of the clubs are small and that’s exactly what you’ve got in Scotland. Rangers and Celtic are giants and that’s it.

“There are parallels with many countries across Europe, places such as Belgium and Portugal, where there’s a difference between the top two or three and the rest.”

Green has revealed he is also keen to push the boundaries of football law and regulation like never before – and maintains Rangers are right to do so.

The Yorkshireman revealed during his trip Down Under he has written to Prime Minister David Cameron signalling his intent to challenge certain issues he feels hold Gers back.

Green believes the Light Blues should be allowed to branch out to play in leagues outwith Scotland and will go to whatever lengths he feels are appropriate to move the club forward.

He added: “We’re part of the EU and what we have to do is take advantage of the rules and regulations within that.

“There are very clear and concise regulations regarding the restriction of trade and football is a business which benefits from the rules and protections of EU competition laws.

“There is no doubt whatsoever the English FA and leagues will be in breach of European competition laws.

“They will say UEFA and FIFA regulations are outside of that, something you’d expect, but it’s not true. Nothing is outside the law.

“If people continue to hide behind that, they will be challenged in court and they will lose. The reality is things are going to change.

“I understand why people don’t want to change or give up the little gold mines they have found but it’s not within European law for them to do so.

“I have written to the Prime Minister to make the point this is something we want to do but not necessarily for him to come out and help or support us.

“I’ve always believed in telling someone what you’re going to do and I think speaking to the Prime Minister and the First Minister is the proper thing to do.

“But rather than wait for anyone to agree to it, I’m just going to get on with seeing what is open to us.

“Rangers fans are aware our transfer ban was applied and the Fighting Fund put up a defence, went to court and the ban was then thrown out.

“I’d rather these matters were resolved within football laws but if people want to put their heads in the sand, maybe there is no choice but to challenge issues in court.”

Like yourself, no doubt, I can admire a good/great fitba team and will be the first to say “well done” if they beat the Celts.

What we saw the other night was something else.

Celtic as a club have been round the circuit in Europe – we’re nobody’s fools.

We are perfectly within our rights to get some official clarification about how matches are refereered, if we think that we have been “done”.

The official response from UEFA, because there MUST be one, is one I look forward to.

The worst we can expect is that UEFA sanction the referee, which would be the easy way out for them.

It’s funny you should say that, I don’t do old media, and haven’t since the internet, and only guess what they say, along with what I read in Celtic media. You’re right it is hard for ‘band wagon jumpers’ who are slaughtering Ambrose they’re same Celtic supporters that know for a ‘fact’ Gary Hooper or Victor Wanyama are leaving *in every window* becuase they heard it on Radio Snyde, or read it in the DR.

MSM were probably sweating like Elvis in concert, trying for the KC quote, and If he slips up, in a game soon, they’ll then persue Efe Ambrose for more of the same.

    Celtic are unique CSC

  26. The Boy Jinky – Totally agree. While a player is simply standing his ground its fine. If he pushes the keeper, or pulls him while he is making his run towards the ball, its a foul. I understand Juve looking to stop Hooper possible getting in the way of Buffon, but their tactics were to cheat, rather than try something else. And if Paul is correct, they went out of their way, to find out just how much cheating they could get away with before hand.
