Resurrection of defensive bedrock, work done in your name

980

The bedrock Celtic built their record-breaking league win on last was the defence; we went months without conceding, serious chances for opponents were written up lustily.  A large part of the summer shambles was the contrasting nature of our defensive play; Legia Warsaw scored six but they also missed a hatful.

While our results have improved in recent weeks it’s the defensive record which has shown the most marked up-lift.  We’ve conceded only twice in seven games, a ricochet against Astra and that goal against Hamilton.  By contrast, we kept only a solitary clean sheet in the seven games prior to this run.

On the surface, we looked shaky in defence for the latter parts of the game against Inverness on Saturday, but while there is still work to do, the defence can be encouraged that they are able to withstand sustained pressure – and that they can rely on their keeper, when necessary.

A couple of action points for you:

Magners are donating £18,300 to the Celtic Foundation.  The money will go to the four areas the Foundation work: Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty, in proportion to how fans nominate those areas.  To participate, tweet @MagnersUK with one of the following hashtags: #Health, #Equality, #Learning or #Poverty.

Magners have been a great help to our campaign to build a fourth CQN school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in recent weeks, so I’m keen we support and encourage this initiative.  £18,300 is a huge bonus for the Foundation, they will do great work with it.

The Foundation are full on with their Christmas strategy at the moment.  This year money will be split between those who look after the homeless and vulnerable, and individual families – identified by grassroots organisations, to help them buy gifts for kids and put a Christmas meal on the table.

This work is being done in your name, so make sure you’re aware of it.

The inaugural Foundation ladies’ lunch event, Ghirls for Good, takes place on Saturday 13 December, proceeds towards the Christmas Appeal.  If you qualify……. Book here.

Expect Stoksey has a cold or flu and spreading it through the squad on the flight is not a good idea

Speak up now for the fans.

Your continued silence is embarrassing and only re-Inforces the view that you are complicit in the big lie.

Today, Graeme Spiers is the latest to “welcome the return of the Old Firm”, with his sick reference that “a few women will take a few blows” over this fixture.

Put an end to this charade now Celtic.

Tell it like it is, and don’t take the cowardly route of staying silent.

    Just tell the truth.

    There is no Old Firm

Given the sheer number of games and scale of the rebuild for new players and coaches I was surprised and disappointed at how many expected near instant success.

In no other business would that be considered reasonable or achievable.

    Geordie..,

I thought any ban was put on ice till the appeal was over ?

  5. Geordie Munro:

Has Tonev started his ban? Has his appeal been heard?

    Winning Captains:

I’ll take a set of them if possible, but I’d need to give you the cash in person in November.

  6. Neil,

    Hmmmm. Plan scuppered.

Has the appeal been ofishially lodged? Was he omitted on Saturday?

Anything is possible with this ruling body.

  7. And the Bulgarian FA have told the SFA lodge, that UNTILL they see proof of guilt they can go and take …k to themselves, they’re playing him, and good for them.

    Precisely neebs.

There were fans on here mocking Ronny for using 28 players in his first x number of games without even knowing how many any previous managers used.

  9. Not so long ago when put on the spot,Speirs said that he could not go along with the idea that Sevco were the same team, that were liquidated. His intelligence just could not accept that theory.

A wee thought on the Livi program writer,

First off did he resign or was he sacked ?

If sacked then I expect a tribunal would find for him and award compensation, no ?

  11. Neil…..

    Pretty sure he resigned.

I posted about his sacking but was promptly advised he jacked it in himself.

Was pressure put on him to go though?

    Good Morning All.

Basically Graham Spiers is openly saying this morning “My job is to help sell newspapers” and in that he is absolutely accurate.

That is indeed his job and the job of any other journalist in the written press.

I remember years ago being somewhat annoyed by an English Journalist who described the atmosphere at a Celtic v Rangers game as “horrible: ugly: awful and unpleasant” – he made it plain it was far from being his favourite football fixture whilst at the same time acknowledging that there was an edge and a tension to the game which was exciting.

Instinctively, I bristled at his comments concerning a fixture I had attended so many times.

Yet as the years went on, I have to confess that I came to dislike the fixture more and more.

Was winning the league against St Johnstone a better feeling that beating Rangers?

    You bet it was.

Or the feeling when Naka’s free kick soared into the net against Man Utd? was that better than playing Rangers?

    You bet it was.

How about the defeat of Barcelona? Miles better than playing Rangers.

Domestically, when we beat Aberdeen 3-2 with big Sammy scoring with the overhead kick — yes that was better then playing the Gers.

Over the years there have been many memories that didn’t involve Rangers.

    Dixie’s hatricks against Hibs.

Davie Provan’s freekick against Dundee Utd

The two late goals against Hearts in the Scottish Cup Semi Final

    Love Street and Albert Kidd

I could go on and on — and none of those games had any of the bile and smell of that horrible fixture.

I have many friends who are Rangers fans and who dislike the whole historical rivalry and how it is expressed. It has nothing to do with football. Nothing to do with the quality of the play. Nothing to do with the movement of the ball, the beating of a man, the leap of the centre forward and his ability to pull away from the defender and guide or bullet a header past the outstretched keeper.

Read Graham Spiers’ article again. Where does he mention football other then to say that the quality of the actual football is often left wanting?

If that is so then just what is he frothing at the mouth about? A tension that sees a few women get thumped and the A&E departments stretched to breaking point? Where publicans and taxi drivers hope for a draw, and the police overtime bill soars.

I have enjoyed many a Celtic v Rangers match, and of course I have suffered the pain of defeat. That is sport. You can never fully enjoy the exuberance of winning unless you have known the pain of a loss.

However that article does not reflect that feeling. It seeks to celebrate the out of control tension and recognises domestic violence and public disorder as a price worth paying for 90 minutes of so called entertainment.

Graham Spiers is a fine writer. I also believed him to be a decent human being and a sincere practising Christian.

However, not for the first time I question his ability to see sense, practice common sense, and write and express himself sensibly.

I for one do not shake with anticipation at this fixture and I am not one of those who just can’t wait for this game.

In fact, I will be glad when it is over and done with if it ever gets played at all.

It is my earnest wish that we don’t have to consider another such tie for a long long time.

For the avoidance of doubt, I love football and have often gone to games which do not involve Celtic at all — whether they be junior games, amateur games, or professional games, domestic games or international games.

I love supporting Celtic at home or abroad and have enjoyed the best of times cheering on the hoops and in the company of Celtic fans and indeed others.

But please don’t tell me that this fixture and all that tension etc is something to celebrate because it is not.

Without wishing to appear haughty or up myself — me and my kids are better than that.

    Robert88,

If that’s the case I would expect his agent to take the SFA to court for slander, this would remove the club from the civil litigation scene and be within the UEFA directives on civil proceedings, maybe :)

  14. Scanned the rags in Morrisons, the Daily Record’s anti Irish racism is still alive and kicking, headline says it’s OK to boo Aiden and James McCarthy next week.Actually what Strachan said was,it’s OK to boo,if it is only for football reasons.More crap from ‘Football Writer of the Year’,Jingle Jangle.

  15. Tony67

Tomorrow is a different competition. He’ll be eligible regardless.

    Rob88 & cana

They won’t increase it. The increased ban is only dished out now for frivolous appeals.

  16. Hopefully is gets reduced completely.

Also with regards to the club making statements, I cant see it happening, however If they were to make a statement I’d prefer it if they allowed every arse under the sun to say all about it and how its missed, Scotland needs it blah blah to Celtic saying, we haven’t missed it, and will enjoy welcoming Scotlands newest team formed in 2012.

Something similar to the previous statement about Celtic needing Rangers and the club stating we have our own model and plan that doesn’t rely or include them.

    It was timed just right.

  17. BRTH

Speirs will be well aware of falling, or is it failing, circulation figures for his rag.

These people will print anything to keep their jobs.

    Even a load of rubbish.

However, it needs to be controversial, and the next three months will give them all the oxygen they need.

    Shame.

  18. canamalar-the Livvy programme writer was a volunteer ;], but i believe the Evening Times printed his name and address……….

  19. Neil…..

I also understand the post did not command a salary!

He was a “volunteer”, so not sure what action could be taken.

  20. It’s usually criminals who get their name printed on conviction that sort of thing.

Fair enough write an article, but thats a bit too far.
