Resurrection of defensive bedrock, work done in your name

980

The bedrock Celtic built their record-breaking league win on last was the defence; we went months without conceding, serious chances for opponents were written up lustily.  A large part of the summer shambles was the contrasting nature of our defensive play; Legia Warsaw scored six but they also missed a hatful.

While our results have improved in recent weeks it’s the defensive record which has shown the most marked up-lift.  We’ve conceded only twice in seven games, a ricochet against Astra and that goal against Hamilton.  By contrast, we kept only a solitary clean sheet in the seven games prior to this run.

On the surface, we looked shaky in defence for the latter parts of the game against Inverness on Saturday, but while there is still work to do, the defence can be encouraged that they are able to withstand sustained pressure – and that they can rely on their keeper, when necessary.

A couple of action points for you:

Magners are donating £18,300 to the Celtic Foundation.  The money will go to the four areas the Foundation work: Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty, in proportion to how fans nominate those areas.  To participate, tweet @MagnersUK with one of the following hashtags: #Health, #Equality, #Learning or #Poverty.

Magners have been a great help to our campaign to build a fourth CQN school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in recent weeks, so I’m keen we support and encourage this initiative.  £18,300 is a huge bonus for the Foundation, they will do great work with it.

The Foundation are full on with their Christmas strategy at the moment.  This year money will be split between those who look after the homeless and vulnerable, and individual families – identified by grassroots organisations, to help them buy gifts for kids and put a Christmas meal on the table.

This work is being done in your name, so make sure you’re aware of it.

The inaugural Foundation ladies’ lunch event, Ghirls for Good, takes place on Saturday 13 December, proceeds towards the Christmas Appeal.  If you qualify……. Book here.

Hear Hear……..It makes me feel ashamed as a Celtic supporter that the Aberdeen fans banner was 100% on the button.

All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.

As much as I quite like wgs he does come across as over confident in my book. With this comes a trait that he can say what he wants and it’ll be accepted by others. On Sky last Sunday he fell into the usual msm trap when asked about cheating club.

I thought he was going back off after his ‘they’ve been punished enough’ line, but instead went on to compound things with his plea for the new club to be put into the top flight somehow.

An astonishing comment. Gordon either let his ego take over, or he’s completely out of touch with the facts, and the feelings of every Celtic supporter.

Apart from the ones that have bought chateaux on the Cotentin peninsula.

  11. GS is an establishment man now towing the SFA line, but voicing an opinion of them somehow to be put in the top flight is ignoring the integrity of the sport however he has said in the past that football is not full of role models so dont look there for them, teams and players will do what they need to do to win

  12. WGS,no surprise to me,its all about him, done well for us to an extent but blunders like Flood rather than McGeady for a game the Departed were dreading done for me.

Add to that he had his mind made up,and furniture moved 6 months before exit was dis-appointing in terms of integrity.

Was lucky to have Tommy Burns in his initial period.

Will be seen by SFA as one of their own who had a little wobble joining us,bit like Murdo, and Provan.

Question how come McCall got a gig in the Scotland set up? given his recent resignation, even McCall does not rate McCall.

Can’t believe anyone would not go to watch Celtic because of the opposition. I don’t like RD or his limited tactics but still go home and away because Celtic is playing.

  15. I may be in the minority, but I really couldn’t give a toss about Rangers, Sevco, Newco, The Rangers International plc or whoever else plays their football at Ibrox or whatever it is called these days. Really sick reading about it to be honest. I don’t care if anyone uses the Old Firm tag. I don’t care if ‘they’ kid on they have 100+ years of history. Everyone knows the truth and everyone has their own view which will never be changed. Debate is pointless.

I support Celtic. I support every player who pulls on the jersey, and I think the executive team at the club is doing a great job. Those who want change just have to look elsewhere in football to see that we have it good.

I am looking forward to playing ‘them’ because I think the players will get a huge lift from it. We have little excitement in our football lives this season. The opposition in the SPL and in the Europa league group stage is mundane.

Ronny may be coming round. I have been very critical of him, but maybe, just maybe, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

  16. So Gordon Strachan picks a Rangers player for the Scotland squad and the knives are out and he now joins the CQN hate list.

Gets more like Follow Follow every day.

  17. If Sevco were back in the top flight with a few excellent young Scots playing for them, should they be in the Scotland team?

WGS is right to pick who he feels are the best in Scotland no matter who they play for.

Bulgarian FA want to see evidence re Tonev incident.

Just heard that on News, good for them,as I said before if he is guilty no place for him here, however he is entitled, as are Celtic to understand the reason for the decision.

  19. Imo, WGS has done well by Celtic and Scotland. If he chooses to give an undead player an experience of the squad, good for him. He did the same last time with the boy playing in Portugal.

  20. The Comfortable Collective on

Sevco are not 101 on Uefa list. That is rangers (in liquidation) who built up a coefficient and since liquidation have year on year been losing their coefficient. It will be 5 seasons before their coefficient disappears.

I personally haven’t mention anything about WGS and him the past few days, but it does seem strange to me that he has not seen the boy play yet still picks him.

Did Celtic ask for evidence,or is that part of the appeal process?

  23. Gary Hooper’s decision to move from Celtic has made him some money but he is very far from European fitba and even further from playing for England. He may not be in the top 20 candidates for his national team. Hope he enjoyes his salary while he is not even a first pick for his championship team. Career moving downhill fast. He made a poor choice IMO.

A Bulgarian FA statement said: “The Bulgarian Football Union would like to express its full support for the player.

“We join Celtic and express their willingness to assist in every possible set of international football laws to be reveal the truth.

“And in this case it is undeniable – a young and talented Bulgarian footballer is charged and punished for an offense he allegedly did not commit and no evidence of his guilt.

“Aleksandar Tonev always been a role model, put his heart and soul on the field and never violated the principles of fair play in the football game.

“The Bulgarian Football Union strongly condemns all forms of racism and xenophobia in football stadiums and will continue its policy of zero tolerance for such events.

“In the case of Tonev however we demand to see evidence that he had committed that in which he is accused. Otherwise, we will consider that the penalty is biased and exaggerated.”
