Resurrection of defensive bedrock, work done in your name

980

The bedrock Celtic built their record-breaking league win on last was the defence; we went months without conceding, serious chances for opponents were written up lustily.  A large part of the summer shambles was the contrasting nature of our defensive play; Legia Warsaw scored six but they also missed a hatful.

While our results have improved in recent weeks it’s the defensive record which has shown the most marked up-lift.  We’ve conceded only twice in seven games, a ricochet against Astra and that goal against Hamilton.  By contrast, we kept only a solitary clean sheet in the seven games prior to this run.

On the surface, we looked shaky in defence for the latter parts of the game against Inverness on Saturday, but while there is still work to do, the defence can be encouraged that they are able to withstand sustained pressure – and that they can rely on their keeper, when necessary.

A couple of action points for you:

Magners are donating £18,300 to the Celtic Foundation.  The money will go to the four areas the Foundation work: Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty, in proportion to how fans nominate those areas.  To participate, tweet @MagnersUK with one of the following hashtags: #Health, #Equality, #Learning or #Poverty.

Magners have been a great help to our campaign to build a fourth CQN school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in recent weeks, so I’m keen we support and encourage this initiative.  £18,300 is a huge bonus for the Foundation, they will do great work with it.

The Foundation are full on with their Christmas strategy at the moment.  This year money will be split between those who look after the homeless and vulnerable, and individual families – identified by grassroots organisations, to help them buy gifts for kids and put a Christmas meal on the table.

This work is being done in your name, so make sure you’re aware of it.

The inaugural Foundation ladies’ lunch event, Ghirls for Good, takes place on Saturday 13 December, proceeds towards the Christmas Appeal.  If you qualify……. Book here.

Celtic fans are too stupid by far. This board is testament to that.

It would be like herding cats on LSD

  2. Think there could be a lot of goals tonight in the ole Champions League. 3 goals or more in the 5 games that don’t involve a team from the bestest league in the world at about 22/1 with the 4-folds covered as well.

Let the goal fest begin. Even though I’ll be watching Real Madrid swatting away Liverpool (that game was only 1/3 for there to be 3 or more goals!)

Well you know my stance on it, the entire kit and caboodle in rotten to the core. ( See Tonev v Boyd )

People come up with reasons why Celtic fans aren’t turning up, but not enough realise there’s missing numbers because the game is up.

Thousands of empty seats because the game is already broken, and Celtic are welded in.

It’ll be worse next year, if the inevitable happens.

Celtic fans are sick to the stomach of “The big lie” and they’ve not even got warmed up yet with their disused phrases like ‘old firm’.

  4. “Seven changes for Liverpool from the Newcastle game at the weekend. Brendan taking a chance here against the European Champions?”

    Celtic mac,

I wouldn’t fancy facing them with the same mob that lost to Newcastle ;)

yeah agree. They all have shit on one another. Their only remit is to keep the gravy train going to keep up with the shut yer mooth payments. One big pot of jobbies. Pigs call it swill.

  6. Awe_Naw… I hate the idea of Celtic fans who have committed a lot of time, effort and money following the team missing this game due to the opposition. I have every sympathy for the guys who feel strongly and won’t attend and I support their right to make that individual decision. I’ll support Celtic regardless of who we are taking the field against but it doesn’t make me more or less of a Celtic fan than the guys choosing not to attend.

Just saw the LFC lineup for the game against Real …. that it the line-up of a manager who knows (i) his starters have quit on him, and (ii) his tenure as manager is just about over.

Too bad … BR seems to be a decent sort. I didn’t think he was ready for that gig when he first got it, but seemed to making a decent go of it last year …. think he and Suarez will both pay for the bite. but for the bite, think Suarez might have found his home at Anfield…. dont think he will fit in at Barca, and not sure that he will ever hit the heights he did last season. Unfortunately for BR, he is the one who will lose his job as a result..

Just committed the schoolboy error of putting the radio Clyde phone in on. Some nugget Celtic ‘fan’ debating with Gordon Dalziel about Celtic losing all their stars and Sevco spending vast amounts of Ashley dough to get tooled up for the League Cup semi.

Brendan putting his reputation on the line for sure.

Speaking of gambling I think Liverpool will be at their biggest odds against on record.

    Any takers?

  11. mike in totonto.. Suarez engineered the move to Barca knowing full well the consequences of his actions if he bit agaIn…. He did it at Ajax to get his move, he did it a season or so ago when he wanted to move and he did it again knowing what would happen.

Same question from Saturday brother… will you go?

I’ll be going as not wanting to miss the thumping that will get dished out.

Won’t be able to fully appreciate their pain in the hall.

Think of those who supported Celtic educated us on them and are no longer with us.

What would they think about our (celtics) lack of appetite to provide what they prepared us for most in life ? To win the battle. To get an even playing field. To ensure that our children do not have to go through all that medieval shit again ? eh ? That is to be shelved because of a few Celtic Bigots and one Irish Billionaire.

I have followed Suarez’ career since Ajax, and not sure that I agree that the bite thing was quite a ‘work to rule’ campaign …. but I dont disagree …. there is something wrong with his head.

But last year he was almost as good as messi and/or ronaldo, and probably more important to his his team than either of them …

  16. Celtic mac,

I’ve just fired them on my coupon with Cowdenbeath.

195/1 double with bet Victor :-o

  17. Awe_Naw…. I believe the issue is that we are the best / biggest club in the country and that doesn’t sit well with the indigenous hordes…. We have usurped them and they can’t handle it and them, the SFA and the MSM are trying every trick that is not in the book to put us in our place. It’s not happening. Let’s just go and hump them and put them where they belong.

  18. Listening to rc phone in, I know I know, but they seem to be under the impression that some of our loan signings will be off in Jan.? All loan signings at celtic are hear to the end of the season, FACT, oops Donald Findley sais he said no such thing about fatso, he sais fatso has conducted home self with real dignity, hahahahah

So Richard Wilson on shortie saying he thinks Donald Findlay didnt mean that Rangers were a new club, he’s not sure but he thinks he meant its to do with the different people who dont know what the club’s about.

We (Celtic PLC) have shown at every turn that they even when dead THEY are the ONLY thing in the country as far as Scottish football is concerned that matters. It means a less risky steady income. A dignified silence while we negotiate TV deals on their behalf for their betterment and to the detriment to others That is all that matters not our history, not our principles, not the laws and regulation of the game or law of the land. The bottom line. Wont be long now before Celtic PLC reflects the people who will still follow them. Conniving, Callous and greedy.

I’ve heard a few people in the media stating that Celtic could be defeated when they play “the the” because most of the players haven’t experience Celtic vs Alter Ego.

If you look at the Celtic line up when they won the last ever came against Rangers 3-0 we had 5 players in the starting line up. Izzy, Mulgrew, Matthews, Brown and Commons.

So that argument is bollocks then.

    Hail Hail

  23. mike in toronto on

My two cents worth on the question of whether or not the club should/will say something about Sevco.

Should they? Absolutely. Honesty, the spirit of the club, the players and the fans who were cheated demand it. Failure of the club to come out and nail our colours to the wall an insult to the many people who have played for and supported Celtic through the years.

Will they? Not a chance. Money – not honour or dignity – is now what seems to matter most. Whether we like it or not, money is what drives how Celtic operates, and if DD/PL think they will make more by staying silent, then that is what they will do.

Personally, I think they are being short-sighted as I know that my feelings for the club are being impacted by their failure to speak up. And eventually this may drive me from the club I love. And I know that I am not the only one. Eventually, this will hit DD/PL in the pocket book …. which is probably when they will decide to say something. I am afraid that by then it will be too late for me and for many others.
