‘RIDICULOUS’: SUTTON’S VERDICT ON KENNEDY COMMENTS

CHRIS SUTTON has queried the wisdom behind John Kennedy’s remarks that Celtic are “still the best team in the country”.

The caretaker manager was clearly delighted after watching his side click into top gear at last in the 6-0 win over Livingston at Parkhead at the weekend.

The Hoops have endured a wretched campaign and their quest for the historic tenth successive title was blown when they lost 1-0 at Ibrox on January 2.

That was a must-win encounter and, despite dominating for an hour before Nir Bitton’s red card, they were left with nothing to show for their efforts when Callum McGregor deflected in the only goal of the game from a right-wing corner-kick.

They are 20 points adrift of Steven Gerrard’s side as they prepare for the Scottish Cup fourth round tie at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon.

Former Hoops goal hero Sutton believes Kennedy’s comments are “daft”.

TALK OF THE TOWN…Chris Sutton has plenty to say on John Kennedy’s remarks.

The one-time England international, now a top media pundit, said: “He could still say that Celtic have a good team that they can perform extremely well.

“But he said they are the best team in the country, that is a completely different thing to say, it’s a ridiculous thing to say.

“First of all, it’s absolutely not true, everyone can see that and it’s slightly delusional to say that.”

Sutton, speaking to the Record Celtic podcast, added: “Whether Celtic fans like it or not, everybody has to sit back and applaud what Steven Gerrard has done at Ibrox this season.

“They have won the league easily. For Celtic, it’s been a woeful, woeful season – just accept it and that’s what John Kennedy didn’t do.

“Now Celtic have a team who are extremely capable and a team which haven’t performed well enough this season and on any given day of course they can go out and beat Rangers.

“But it was just a really daft comment to make that Celtic are still the best team in the country when they have been annihilated this season.

“It was an unnecessary comment and, perhaps, a comment that motivates Rangers going into this game just to absolutely put one on Celtic, but I would like to think that wouldn’t affect the Celtic team and their mindset.”
