Right back challenge

913

We can convince ourselves we have players who can fill the right back role, and this may be true for a few more weeks, but Mikael Lustig was one of the frailties that cost us against AEK last August, and we don’t even have him now.

So far the transfer window has gone well, but a team is as well as its weakest link. Failure to get a right back who can stop crosses into the box has to be avoided.

That night in Athens is all the motivation we should need.

  1. was told last night, that todays o walk in toronto has been going on for 199 years.

    lovely presbyterian ontario.

  2. Morgan put in a couple of good crosses as today as well

Did the same on Tuesday night

Hopefully we can get a striker to get on the end of them

  3. Hard to judge Luca today, did little wrong but nothing to get you out of your seat either, Looks like he can take a pass in tight situations but a few times immediately tried a speculative long through ball.

Don’t know if it was being a bit nervous on his debut or if that is the way they play in Bolton but no one up front seemed to be on same wavelength.

Timhorton…I saw a photograph in the Evening Times of last weekend’s walk here in Glasgow. It was captioned…329th parade in Glasgow to celebrate the battle of the boyne…that’s one every year since the big fight…no bad! :o)

  5. The Huddle

Difficult to explain on here but imagine the `R` with a Glasgow burr followed by `an` or maybe the way the Spanish pronounce `j` followed by `ran`.

  6. Noticeable today the difference in class between the first 11 and the rest. Christie, Ajer, Edouard and McGregor are different class altogether. KT in the same bracket when fit. Ewan Henderson and Lewis Morgan both showed promise. More investment needed.

    Ren.

Or if you wanted to be flash you could do a bit of Gallic throat-clearing on the first R.

  8. Morgan, motm.

    Connell looks great.

Julien, not an elegant looking player. Good at long passes, short passes can be inaccurate.

    Henderson, really good

Brown needs to be used only when aggro is required. Cal Mac, Christie, Connell, Henderson, Rogic and Ntcham (the proper version) all contribute more to the game. And Okoflex ain’t far behind.

Sinclair is on a shoogly peg…

Hard to say, i thought he was tidy enough on the ball but lacked fitness and was a bit passive. Those long balls were never on, Griffiths doesn’t have the pace. Rodgers would have coached that out of him in no time, Lenny probably will as well.

  12. Fairhill Bhoy: the Benalmádena event you referred to is being organized by the owners of the John Lemon pub, I am led to believe.

  13. not long in from the game , thoughts Julien dosent look fit well i hope that his issue , AR not good enough , Luca tidy player but not ready for first 11 ,we have better in reserve as it is , as someone mentioned earlier wish we had someone who could take a corner/free kick oh i forgot ma ball LG our deadfall expert is the only that gets to take them when he is on the park.

LM looked eager and was our best player .

  14. The Wren (sic) 18 and 27 were a cut above in the 2nd half I thought. Very good players both; were they the ones linked with us?

  15. Tim Horton, it was very big years ago when TO was known as the Belfast of North America and Mayors/Chiefs of Police were grand masters of the lol, however I thought it had died out.

Surprised if there was one the day with the Indy on and other much more palatable events in town, although I have no doubt they still occur in the northern reaches of the province.

I was coming down from the Martyrs Shrine about 30 year ago and got off the highway at Aliston for a break, much tae my consternation there was one on there that day.

Several years back I was watching the late night City TV news when it ended with footage of a wee drap of them marching up tae Queens Park, they were belting out the Cadburys Smash culminating with the obligatory FTP, in broad Scots accents.

Do you think Dublin’s continued dominance is healthy for the future of Gaelic county football?

  18. Quite enjoyed that today. I thought Rennes treated it like a CLQ. So when I got home from the game I googled them to check their status.

It seems they actually thought it was a CLQ match too!!

Anyway, I think there’s a desire in Lenny to be more positive and attack minded compared to Fraudgers. I predict more goals and a bigger points gap this season.

Morgan will play a big part this season. I didn’t realise we had signed Luca Modric. That’s a bonus! Big CJ looked fine apart from one “Bombscare Boyata” moment in defence. Having Griff and Bitton available is like two excellent new signings. With Dembele, Henderson and others breaking through our domestic dominance appears assured even thought Sevco have been busy signing eight great new players.

Oops, didn’t realise I got that much Sun today!!! I better take it easy for the rest of the weekend!

Finally,I sit in the North Stand Upper. Can anyone clarify what district the three tower blocks to the left of Hampden are in?

Just trying to get my bearings…….

  19. Bhoylo83: Honestly?

Sorry, just started to post and the technical glitches ruining this site took over. So no offense intended.

I understand your point of view. The Championship needs competition but we haven’t always dominated, far from it. I’m enjoying it as a Dub as I did in the ‘70s.

When Dublin will finally lose its grip on Sam Maguire, and it will, I hope it will be because other teams raise their standard rather than Dublin lowering theirs.

  20. Almore

I have heard the ‘it goes in cycles’ argument but it’s different this time due to the amount of investment in the Dublin area over the last 15-20 years compared to other counties, a constant conveyor belt of talent being churned out year on year from the biggest talent pool (by far) in the whole country

Until the GAA address this, i dont see it changing any time soon and the dropping attendances are already showing the apathy around the rest of the country

Dont get me wrong, the defensive ‘spoiler’ tactics of a lot county teams are not helping either. A lot of games might be ‘competitive’ but are plain boring.

Added to that, the GAA selling it’s soul to Sky buying up the rights to most of the Championship games means people who dont have Sky have no way of seeing them so a lot of the ‘hardcore’ are also losing interest

I played the game for years so have a fondness for it but prefer to watch hurling now

It’s a pity but they need to do something soon before it’s too late

    B-)

  21. Bhoylo83: I don’t disagree at all.

Dublin GAA identified a weakness and set about correcting it, hence the improvement in the football team.

Not so sure about the ‘larger pool’ argument. As the capital with 1.5 – 2n people not all are indisposed to Gaelic games. The GAA has done a magnificent job in the capital to promote its games despite strong competition from soccer, rugby and other sports.

Dublin GAA has also put in a huge effort to promote hurling and after a brief flutter a few years ago we appear to be going backwards.

I agree re Sky but it is a force to be reckoned with and the GAA must uphold our values on our behalf if Gaelic games are to continue with a parochial, county & national ethos.

  22. The sad thing about the football is that Cork played well. However Cork were going full tilt whilst the Dubs were playing within themselves, think with about 14 minutes to go there was only a goal in it.

Then when Cork tired the Dubs turned it on and got 3 goals in a few minutes, one a gift from the Cork keeper.

I expected nothing out of the game so not disappointed, mind you it will be a lot different if we go down to Kilkenny in the hurling tomorrow.
