Right back challenge

913

We can convince ourselves we have players who can fill the right back role, and this may be true for a few more weeks, but Mikael Lustig was one of the frailties that cost us against AEK last August, and we don’t even have him now.

So far the transfer window has gone well, but a team is as well as its weakest link. Failure to get a right back who can stop crosses into the box has to be avoided.

That night in Athens is all the motivation we should need.

  1. All this hype about the Gunners offer of 25 Million from sly sources until

it becomes an official offer from the Gunners I would take this so called

rumour with a pinch of salt & anyway if they are saying on sly sports

news nowadays in England 25 Million is a price for a mediocre player

then I would say KT is worth more that 25 Million

  2. This continual speculation ‘re KT is becoming tiresome now.

We need some clarity if he will feature in our planning. We are already playing crucial games and do not need this ” distraction ”

” If I go there will be trouble, an if I stay it will be double.”

  3. Greenpinata

I’m with you fella. Don’t want to see him go but if he does then sooner rather than later and certainly not an end of transfer window fiasco like Dembele last season.

Ultimately it’s about how we spend the money – we desperately need an injection of real quality into the team.

  4. If I was KT I would stay with our Club after-all is Arsenal going to win

anything this Season? Yeah they may do well in making European

Runs which they intend to concentrate on however their weakness

is their Away form like playing away from the Emirates they tend

to slip up even against teams you would not expect them to lose

too I bet they have been a bookies coupon buster in the past on

fellow tims who post on here bookies slips & that’s my point

yes wages wise it might be good for KT & his ‘Ex’ Dundee Utd

Player Agent however the grass is not always greener on the

other side & if KT was to make said move it may well be a

move which he lives to regret food for thought KT

  5. Regards the RB situation…

I think we should stick to playing 3 at the back and just do away with fullback’s all together.

Think of the money we could make on KT and what we could save by only having to recruit CB’s from here on in. Getting a suitable RB in is just too difficult for a spfl club like us down to any number of reasons that we all know about, why even bother?

Plenty of positives in our 2/3 year search for a RB if you’re willing to look for them. I just don’t understand the negativity around this.

Does anyone on here actually believe that if we got £25M for Kieran it would all be reinvested in the playing squad? Gies a break…..

  7. £25M for KT is good value. And he deserves to be in the big earners league.

Boli looks an able replacement with Hayes as backup until such time as we source anything better.

Right back I’m ok with Ralston for the run of the mill SPFL teams. Again we need something better for Europe.

    And a striker too.

It would be reinvested into new disco lights for the snack bars & toilets within CP Stadium

nah seriously can 25 Million nowadays buy you a lot of quality players? No. & when you

consider the prices quoted for players in the English transfer market that is a definitely

    big “No”

Same as it ever was..no ambition is our watchword…

  10. A top footballers career is relatively short.

Ultimately many of us move for higher paying jobs.

    Some emigrate

    Some work abroad

    Some work on the Rigs.

Some travel the length of the UK and Ireland.

For some it’s ambition, but for the majority it’s to create a better lifestyle for our loved ones.

Its harder to uproot when you have ties.

As far as I’m aware KT has no ties yet, the world can be his oyster. The attraction for a talented young boy to play in the ” best” league in the world within a marvellous city environment will be huge.

If he does decide to go it will be with the blessing of the majority of Celtic supporters. If he stays it will be a major boost for us providing his head has not been turned.

However we need a decision now.

    HH to all.

If I can be serious for a moment. I don’t think price is a definitive guide to how good a player is or can be imo.

Off the top of my head Lubo £.350M, Henrik £.650M and PC Lustig was a free. All top quality players. Conversely how much have players like Andy Carroll, Mario Ballotelli cost their buying clubs to contribute not much?

I’m sure there are other examples both in the bargain buys and rip off categories but you get my drift.

Same as it ever was..no ambition is our watchword…

Lets be honest here if you go over the history of our Club from the past

up until the present Celtic FC tends to bring players through their development

program in other rear their own players & when you look @ the prices they are

asking for modern players nowadays & that’s not taking into consideration their

wage demands by Agents that becomes more apparent for example Leicester

City are looking for 75 Million for McGuire the same as what Liverpool paid

Southampton for Van Dyke now is McGuire on the same level as Van Dyke?

No, Vandyke is a better player so that goes to prove that said “Transfer Market”

Is over inflated as regards to prices being branded around ridiculous to say

the least financially the Club has to box clever as regards to what has been

mentioned & operating cost’s each year

  14. No poblem for me if KT goes.Everyone deserves their chance. We lost a lot better players than KT,through one reason or another. It did not put us in the gutter.Cant understand the moaning about the failure to bring in a RB.Not as if we have not been trying. We offered £9 million for Castagne recently. We tried Toljan.Put an offer in for Smith. We could be like Seethin, and bring in the likes of O’Donnell,is that what some want.Lenny knows what he needs. Is it so hard to trust him?.Another beauty is,we need 2 full backs for each position. In our position, that would be the boy from Killie, and O’Donnell.Would these guys be happy to sit on the benchWould some fans be happy with these signings?Last word on KT.How would he pass a medical.

Totally take the point about the market we operate in and how we have done well with guys like Victor, Virgil etc, I get that 100%.

What I don’t get is our complete lack of forward planning – we stumble from one transfer window to the next.

I also agree that £25m is loose change in today’s over inflated football marketplace but all I want is any money we make spent on players that will take us to the next level – we never do that and I have been following Celtic since the late 1960’s.

Yes Dbhoy I get your drift however don’t forget wee Lubo & Henke where purchased in the

Nineties when there was not as much money involved in the said market as their is nowadays

& also its even more harder nowadays to find a quality player @ an affordable price & wage

packet it seams that said market nowadays is certainly overpriced with a lot of people wanting

Set up? We can’t until we are on a more financial level playing field we can’t just

go sod it & throw caution to the wind we have to take a realistic approach &

  18. AKBW1888,,

I think everyone agrees.Problem is,you make out its Celtics fault. This is the climate we live in.The clubs from the bigger leagues will not pay the transfer fees. They WILL pay treble the wages,so you can see the problem.Thebplayer wants the big wages and tells Celtic he wants to go.We have agreed with KT,and his agents, transfer fee would be £25 million, when signing his last contract. You can see the problem today in England.Mc Guire of Leicester is raging, saying his club are pricing him out of a transfer.

Its not going to change, and nothing to do with Celtic.

  19. I’ve no doubt that Arsenal have submitted a second bid because they’ve leaked it. Just like they leaked their first offer, just like they leaked KT’s salary offer.

They’re a tiresome and classless club to do business with – £25 million including add ons is not a £25 million offer.

Especially if in Arsenal’s case those add ons consist of winning trophies and CL qualification. May as well give me an add on for bedding Angelina Jolie.

    “Caution to the wind’?

We get £25m for our prized asset and stick it in the bank. A total slap in the face to the supporters who spend so much money following our great club. But let’s be honest, the present “custodians” of Celtic do not care one bit about the regular supporter or “customer” as they no doubt call us…

  23. Greenpinata. London is certainly not a wonderful City it reminds me of Tom Cruises

comments to Jamie Fox in the movie entitled “Collateral” about Los Angles being

sprawled out & disconnected which also can be applied to London I know I lived

  25. AKBW1888 on 14TH JULY 2019 11:06 AM

All about opinions fella. London remains a terrific city and Arsenal a terrific club for KT to move to, despite our obvious blinkers. He gets to develop his football further, not spend each week getting kicked up and down the touchline and looking up to see Willie Collum wave play on. If he goes, I can see many positives for Kieran and I wish him well.

    Just spend the money Celtic.

  26. I get as frustrated as the next man, and am tearing what little hair I have left out at the delay in getting in a right back.

However it is not all doom & gloom & an inept board with no plan just stumbling from crisis to crisis.

We are in a time of unprecedented success and we do have a very strong squad. A lot of necessary culling of the squad has already taken place and we have 4 in, Shved, Boli, Luca & Julien.

There are 2 issues which are causing all the angst as mentioned at the start we need a right back yesterday.

The second is the KT saga, the possible KT transfer is extremely painful because KT embodies the fan in all of us. We will survive & prosper without KT but it would be a lot more enjoyable to survive & prosper with him.

The right back position will be filled shortly of that I’m certain, if KT goes it will hurt big time but if Club do reinvest the money in the squad we should come out stronger in footballing terms.

Having said that let there be no doubt about it. I want KT to stay.

  27. Anybody know if Olivier Ntcham getting his arse kicked by Neil Lennon tomorrow is live on Celtic TV.

We’ve now get that to add to the bucket list of things to sort out.

I too have stayed in London for a time and I can concur with what you are saying.

However the London KT will inhabit will be totally different from what you and I have experienced.

KT ( If he goes ) will see the best London has to offer and the positives that make it one of the world’s greatest cities.

  31. Good words from Lenny regards James Forrest.Thinking of switching him to a No 10.

Broonys replacement?.Assombalonga story surfacing again. If,big if,we could land this boy, would be a perfect signing for us.Definite 30 goals a season in the SPFL.Tough as nails, great finisher, predator.A wee bit like a suped up Morelos, with brains.I have seen him play for Forest,a few times.

  32. AKBW1888 on 14TH JULY 2019 10:31 AM

I do agree to an extant the transfer market in England seems to have lost the plot to a degree but I still don’t think transfer fees are the defining factor of any given players quality.

Two more recent examples would be Coleman to Everton under £.1M and Vardy to Leicester for around a £1M. I concede these deals are hard to find but I believe they are still out there.

Spending x amount on someone like Macguire doesn’t guarantee anything playing wise assuming he remains fit as you’ve already commented on.

Money spent on a player doesn’t always define how good he is, that’s my point which is contrary to what you said earlier.
