Rodgers interview is just noise

302

Can everyone just calm their jets on the notion that Brendan Rodgers, or anyone else for that matter, is in prime position for the manager’s job?

I’ve seen these appointments at close quarters for a long time.  An interview is often little more than a courtesy.  Remember years ago, the ex-Juventus boss, a disaster in Turin, never taken seriously in Glasgow, but he had an influential agent that Celtic wanted to get closer to?

There was also an ex-Celtic player who applied. Everyone know he was a hopeless manager, but still, am ex-player deserved a little courtesy.  He was interviewed, then politely told they were going in a different direction.

Brendan was a winning Celtic manager. If, as reported, he was interviewed, you’d better believe he has invested some capital in even being considered. The way he behaved at Liverpool, then Celtic, and his lack of structural legacy at both these clubs and at Leicester, means Brendan has a bit of a reputational challenge going forward. Even being considered by Celtic would do him good.

I don’t see it going any further than this, though.  We’ve seen what an actual great manager can do. One that leaves a legacy of a valuable squad.  One that never considered short-term loans as part of his modus operandi. A team player in every sense.

We have had an elite operator for two years. The difference to what went before is stark.

I know that in 2019 we didn’t as much appoint Neil Lennon as end up with him after an unfruitful search. So, if we’re reading the signs, there’s a chance we’ll end up with a breaker, not a builder.

I’m reading the signs and I just can’t see Brendan Rodgers getting this gig.  His interview is just noise, it’s not the sound you should be paying attention to.

  1. If Paul67 sez it’s not Brendan, then it’s not Rodgers. Unless, of course, it’s Brendan and he hasn’t put any money on Rodgers yet.

‘I know that in 2019 we didn’t as much appoint Neil Lennon as end up with him after an unfruitful search. ‘

That is as lame an excuse as i’ve ever read for the Lennon appointment.

    It’s absolute nonsense,

Try not to swallow all the keech that Lawwell feeds you.

    Are you sure about that?

Lennon was given the job twice.

  3. Jaysus, that could have been penned by Peter Lawell himself. Scornful.

We should be all over Rodgers and ensure we put the guardrails round him, to be successful as a coach. He’ll bring continued professionlism (a legacy issue) and signings should be on a profile (resale, non-loans & subject to a Celtic committee). Support people should be built into the club not ripped away by him. Not rocket science.

The ‘builders’ come with their own risk and will not be as good a coach as Rodgers.

    From previous thread

The direct qualifiers for CL for 23/4 are now sorted.

Qual Rounds and Play Offs will have limited impact on seedings for groups as far as Celtoc are concerned.

Hope that makes sense to you.

  5. Seriously Paul, reign it in. You’re being ridiculously stupid in down playing the importance of our CEO flying out to hold talks with BR. Would you have us believe that Nicholson will be flying out for fireside chats with all the candidates ?

I suspect P67’s mate no longer calls the shots and is not in the position to make these calls. Thank God.

  7. Spot on Paul67

25 years worth of experience in appointing Celtic managers, and the sort of strategic planning that brings you the dominance we have had in that time doesn’t lead to Brendan Rodgers.

Short-termism that has no place at Celtic these days.

  8. It’s a strange world we live in now. I was up at my Mothers in leafy Broughty Ferry and received a message to say that a bloke was wandering about attacking people with a machete. I have seen pictures of what was going on yet nothing in the SMSM. There was mention in the on-line local press and Polis everywhere. I wonder who they are protecting. on other matters i’m not really for a back to the future with Rodgers. His European record was gash. Still Knutsen for me.

  9. Dear oh dear. Todays blog is revisionist nonsense. Paul comments about Brendan coming across in the same snide way he speaks about Martin O’Neill.

Rodgers took the club to another level but was hindered by a hopeless and out of touch CEO who was more interested in counting beans and ego than what was best for the football club. We will see if Ange can deliver the same success that Brendan had at Leicester, top 5 finish and FA cup. I think you will find Rodgers left a fine squad of players at Leicester and gave youth a chance.

As for the ‘unfruitful search’ comment in relation to Neil Lennon. Dearie me. What search was that? Did Peter not say he had a list but never looked at it?

If speaking to Brendan is a courtesy i would question the competency of two directors, who travelled to Spain in a private jet, for that reason.

    Tom previous,

    Good morning

Signings- who knows Tom,he may come,so might x,y or z but I still think the focus is a manager as,as p67 pay attention since Michael Chris and Ange esp came on we have avoided

Shved like signings.we have been tighter than that. 2 Yr of looking to club for news imo no goin back.

We get into what speculation via whoever,

The press sell copy, this place used to dissent it with lazy journalism not believe then copying and pasting.Celtic need to get it right and get it done.More patience needed.no heat felt by me from the hillwalking loo roll, but the flames are still at the feet of our board til announcement.

They are the captains.in the good ship Celtic.

    Time to sail

Patience and let them decide.i await to support

Press no nuhhin but in modrin meeja age we are all addicted and want/demand it yesterday.

    Bookies same

Proliferation of media ran bots same.

Throw in the love we have for our club its all a heady mix at this uncertain time.(no boss)in the media age.

We are a plc.rules have to be followed.

  11. Todays blog tells you Peter should be nowhere near Celtic, even in a non executive capacity.

  12. I hope we never have to sing this.

This is what it feels to be Celtic,

    Champions again as you know,

Brendan Rogers here until he says no,

    Until he says no.

  13. People don’t really believe we didn’t have a list of candidates that were considered for the job when Lenny got it do they?

Or that PL decided to give him the job in the showers in the day?

  14. I have had my say on Celtic fan expectations on managerial recruitment. Brendan was an outlier in that process- he had managed at an elite EPL level before coming here (MON only had a LC win, Mowbray just a promotion and WGS a manager of the month award.

Mostly we have been managed by ex-Celts with one or two clubs management experience behind them and no elite level successes, coupled with some complete rookies (Barnes etc) or experienced coaches with no record (Jansen, Venglos, Macari)

Brendan , like Potter, still has options. His attractiveness to EPL clubs is diminished not erased. If successful again with us, he could be for the off but then that was true of Ange too. Is it a risk worth taking?

The only sense I can make of Brendan being willing to come back here is that he is coming back to babysit Scott Brown or John Kennedy to quickly take the reins from him so he can get back to EPL Hollywood club land.

Would we be willing to accept him back in that role? Would we accept the fairly unproven Brown and/ or Kennedy to get next dibs?

  15. Surely a courtesy call would be made on teams or likewise modern communication.

To ready your private jet calls for a wee bit more expense, time and effort.

So there WAS a search, then?

“We had approaches from many, many agents, many representatives of managers across the board. How credible it was, you never really know. We put them in the file, just left it and kept our word to Neil, really.”

Doubt Enzo Maresca will be the Celtic manager on the basis of a good interview, when that’s all there is. He has less history than Sevco and for Celtic to plunge from a World Cup proven winner to a handful of Series B games seems absurd.

Just because you are a Pep lookalike doesn’t mean you’re a good identikit for one of the biggest clubs in the world. The Celtic private jet doesn’t zoom off for Palma to fit in, inferior chats, the last time we seen it Dominic McKay and Ange were in the picture.

If we give it to the left field, it’s Barnes and Brady days.

    Mind them CSC

Crikey, Paul – that Rodgers guy sounds like an absolute disaster! Any info on why he wasn’t sacked?

  20. That’s cold water poured on Rodgers and Knudsen. My concern would now be Maresca – unless we pull an Ange-like appointment out of the hat that the bookies haven’t mentioned.

So the Celtic CEO & CFO flew to Spain in a hired jet to give Brendan Rodgers a “courtesy interview”.
